means of transport (cars, motorcycles,<br />

etc.), more means of protection<br />

(seat belts, radars, surveillance<br />

equipment), drawing the attention<br />

of municipal councils and family<br />

groups and clubs for support, alerting<br />

the Army and Security Forces,<br />

and instituting a programme of<br />

road awareness in schools.<br />

Perhaps the most important measure<br />

was the avoidance of alcohol<br />

intake and consequent drunken<br />

driving.<br />

SECONDARY SCHOOLS<br />

HONOURED<br />

On February 7th , 2003, NDU<br />

President Father Boutros Tarabay<br />

presided a meeting with the directors<br />

of schools invited by NDU<br />

Shouf Campus who were advising<br />

their pupils about joining the<br />

<strong>University</strong>. After welcoming those<br />

present, he expressed the view that<br />

the existence of the Campus in the<br />

mountain region was a service to<br />

education and to Lebanon.<br />

He then insisted on the need for<br />

interaction between the <strong>University</strong><br />

and the community, pointing out<br />

that the unique purpose of the former<br />

was to raise the level of education<br />

and learning. The Father<br />

President was followed by Dr.<br />

Fouad Shadid, who spoke about the<br />

Faculty of Science, and by Mr. Farid<br />

Haikal, in charge of the Admissions<br />

Office. Mr. Haikal gave details about<br />

the conditions necessary for registration<br />

in the <strong>University</strong> and Mr. Fady<br />

Khoury then spoke about the<br />

Department of Continuing<br />

Education, which was intended to<br />

serve people of all levels of education.<br />

Finally there was friendly discussion<br />

about various questions concerning<br />

the education offered by the<br />

<strong>University</strong>, with a number of proposals<br />

being noted for consideration.<br />

Hope was expressed for future<br />

contacts between the <strong>University</strong><br />

and the directors of schools in the<br />

interests of the students.<br />

On March 17, 2003, the Shouf<br />

Campus Student Cabinet held its<br />

Annual Book Exhibition, thus<br />

commemorating the 26 th anniversary<br />

of the martyrdom of Kamal<br />

Junblatt, the great Lebanese<br />

leader.<br />
