and directors.<br />

Practice manager and registered nurse<br />

Rachael Picklesand doctors Alvin Ling<br />

and AmandaTorkington joinedexisting<br />

directors, doctors Nigel Tapper and<br />

Stephen Walsh,late in 2019 to formthe<br />

new boardofdirectors of the clinic.<br />

“Models of care in general practice are<br />

changing,’’ says Dr Nigel Tapper, the<br />

clinic’s mostexperienced GP, who has<br />

worked there for 33 years.<br />

‘‘We havebeen working to innovate and<br />

adoptusefulchanges such as the online<br />

patientportaltoenhance our care, and<br />

patient­centred careplanning. Expanding<br />

the directorship to include nursing<br />

leadershipand anewer generation of GPs<br />

will help us to be pro­active in meetingthe<br />

needsofour communityinthe changing<br />

health landscape.”<br />

Dr Walsh,who alongwith Dr VivBinney<br />

has tallied up 17 years at Medical Corner<br />

Doctors, says it is great to secure the future<br />

of the practice.<br />

‘‘Medical Corner Doctors has served the<br />

Waimakariri community for over30years<br />

and it is greattohave some enthusiastic<br />

young owners to ensure thatwecan<br />

continuetoprovide holistic, compassionate<br />

and quality care well into the<br />

future.”<br />

Although the faces around the board<br />

table have changed, noneofthe new<br />

ownersare new to the practice.<br />

Dr Alvin Ling has worked as aGPat<br />

Medical CornerDoctors for seven years.<br />

Dr Amanda Torkington has lived locally<br />

with her youngfamily for nineyears, and is<br />

interestedinall areasofgeneralpractice<br />

and familymedicine.<br />

Rachael Pickles is also a<strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> resident,withsignificant<br />

experience in primary care nursingand<br />

management.<br />

Rachael explained that the Covid­19<br />

pandemic response was an unexpected<br />

test for the newly expanded team.<br />

“I certainly didn’t expect that withinsix<br />

monthsofcommencing as adirector we<br />

would together faceone of the biggest<br />

challenges in our careers. We worked<br />

together well to continuetodeliver care to<br />

our community and are proud of the way<br />

our staffmanagedthe changes.”<br />
