The business environment and style in Israelwill seem familiar to American businesses, butpersonal relationships can play a relativelylarger role within Israel's tight-knit populationthan in the United States (see article below).Appointments can be made on fairly shortnotice, but punctuality is desired. Usually,Israelis arrive well prepared for meetings andare very direct.Israelis are familiar with the fact that most U.S.businesspeople dress formally for meetings.However, this does not mean they will bedressed formally, especially in the summermonths when short shirts and no ties are thenorm. Business suits are appropriate formeetings with VIPs, some private sectorcompanies, and senior government officials.Most businesses and government offices areopen 40-45 hours/week, Sunday thru Thursday.It may be possible to schedule businessappointments for Friday morning, but noappointments or business are done onSaturdays. Common office hours are from 8:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Israelis, Americans, Europeans and Asians allview space, time and values from a different place.If we are all to expect the Israeli, or the Japaneseor the French to act, to behave in the exactmanner - then we will be greatly disappointed!Many business people from the States come toIsrael expecting to do business as if they were stillin New York, California or Texas. The smiles andhandshakes look the same, even the suits andties, but after a few minutes have passed, bothsides, which have come together with greatrespect and mutual admiration - feel something isnot right!The Israeli, who is often perceived as beingarrogant, aggressive and pushy, is actually beingdirect and honest. And the American, Europeanand Asian, who are seen by the Israeli as beingartificial, phony and weak - are actually displayingpoliteness and respect.If both sides are to go into a commercial venture,without taking the time to understand eachother’s cultural traits - they are heading fordisaster!To be successful in business with anIsraeli, you must understand how they see youand where they come from. Israeli society is whatis referred to as a polychronic culture(relationship-oriented), in contrast to American,British or German culture which is monochronic(rule-oriented).
