Fun line-up of events planned<br />

The next two months could be busy in<br />
Kaikoura, should New Zealand return<br />
to alert level 1.<br />
While Covid19 has created some<br />
uncertainty, plenty of events are<br />
planned in the tourist town in coming<br />
weeks, depending on the alert level.<br />
The Kaikoura Whale Run scheduled<br />
for <strong>September</strong> 5has been cancelled, but<br />
the town is gearing up for the Kaikoura<br />
Hop from <strong>September</strong> 16 to 19, while the<br />
Kaikoura Spring Festival and Lip Sync<br />
competition are planned for October.<br />
Residents are undeterred by the<br />
cancellation of the inaugural Kaikoura<br />
Winter Festival because of level 2, and<br />
will bounce back with the inaugural<br />
Spring into Summer Festival from<br />
October 2to4.<br />
There’s neverbeen<br />
abetter time to<br />
support local.<br />
It will feature apoetry night, live<br />
music, latenight shopping, markets,<br />
food, games, The Great Kaikoura Road<br />
Trip, astreet parade and the annual<br />
Kaikoura Lip Sync Competition.<br />
The lip sync contest was originally set<br />
for August, but will now be on October 3,<br />
with residents encouraged to ‘‘double<br />
up and wander the streets of Kaikoura’’<br />
in their lip sync costume. More details<br />
will be available closer to the event.<br />
One event which is going ahead is the<br />
Porsche Club of New Zealand’s visit<br />
this weekend, with 60 cars expected to<br />
line up outside the White Morph Motor<br />
Inn for public viewing.<br />
The Kaikoura council has been<br />
working to create events during quieter<br />
periods in abid to attract visitors to the<br />
town, community development and<br />
events coordinator Jo York says.<br />
Pool work to begin soon<br />
The longawaited Kaikoura Aquatic<br />
Centre will soon start to takeshape.<br />
The tendertobuild the centre has<br />
been awarded to CMT Group NZ Ltd, and<br />
construction of the 25metre pooland<br />
complex will start earlythis month.<br />
The Marlborough and <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
company willwork with local<br />
subcontractors, withKaikoura firms<br />
expected to provide at least 35 percentof<br />
the building works or products.<br />
KaikouraCommunity Charitable Trust<br />
boardchairmanJohn Wyatt says it is<br />
exciting to be breaking ground.<br />
‘‘Theaquatic centre is somethingthat<br />
the communityhas wanted for years.<br />
Thereisareal sense of anticipation as<br />
we see the project physically begin.”<br />
Between the boardand the Kaikoura<br />
District Council,funding of $3.7 million<br />
has been secured.<br />
The complex will include a25m by 12m<br />
lap pool, a6mx10m multiuse learntoswim/hydrotherapy<br />
pool and abeachentry<br />
toddler pool.Changing rooms and a<br />
picnic/barbecue areawill alsobebuilt.<br />
“Many of our funders havementioned<br />
the unique sitewith the best view of any<br />
pool in the country,’’MrWyatt says.<br />
The fundraisingteam is now focusing<br />
on extras, including achildren’saqua<br />
play area and asplashpad with awhale<br />
tail fountain and jet streams.<br />
Eventssuch as The Great Kaikoura<br />
‘‘Part of it is changing the way<br />
businesses think. Winter has<br />
traditionally been aquiet period so<br />
many of them have shut their doors and<br />
relied on the busy summer period, so<br />
it’s about persuading the businesses to<br />
open.’’<br />
As long as New Zealand is at level 1,<br />
more events are in the pipeline to<br />
attract visitors, including the annual<br />
Kaikoura Trotting Cup, which is set to<br />
return in November, and the Kaikoura<br />
A&P Show will be back in February.<br />
The council has also been talking to<br />
Fusion Events and has confirmed<br />
Kaikoura will host atriathlon on<br />
January 3.<br />
Afanzone is also being planned for<br />
the America’s Cup yacht racing in<br />
March, with alarge, movable outdoor<br />
screen to view the races.<br />

Ultrasound machine aboost<br />
KaikouraHealth’s new ultrasound<br />
machineisproving to be an invaluable<br />
asset.<br />
KaikouraHealthdoctor Andrea Judd<br />
says it is usedmultipletimeseveryweek.<br />
‘‘It reallyismakingasignificant<br />
differenceinensuring patients getthe<br />
rightcare at the righttime,” she says .<br />
The Maia Health Foundation bought it<br />
for Kaikoura Health thanks to substantial<br />
donations of $22,000 each from Pegasus<br />
Health and MainPower, and an individual<br />
donationfromGerald and Peggy Salkeld.<br />
It was installedinMarch.However, the<br />
lockdown meant hopes for an official<br />
unveiling were dashed.<br />
However, in late Julythat was rectified,<br />
with MainPower chief executive Andy<br />
Lester, the MainPower executive<br />
leadership team, Pegasus Health chief<br />
executive Vince Barry, and Anna Galvan<br />
and Michael Flatmanfrom the Maia<br />
HealthFoundationtravellingtoKaikoura<br />
to meetthe Kaikoura Health team.<br />
Mr Lester saiditwas amazing to see the<br />
equipmentinactionand discoverthe<br />
differenceitmade to patients.<br />
‘‘We are proud that we played apart in<br />
providingthistothe community, ”hesays.<br />
Since March it has been usedto<br />
diagnose abdominalpain, check for gall<br />
bladder infections, and has also been used<br />
in the treatment of accident victims to<br />
check for internal injuries. In one case, it<br />
was used to diagnoseaneye condition.<br />
Mr Flatman says there’s no doubtthe<br />
machine has fulfilled Maia’smission of<br />
improvinglocal health services.<br />
