Behind the Mic: Riggs
95.7 the Hog, Daytona Beach
Hello, friends!
2020 was supposed to
be a fun, novelty year. It
started out so promising
with those well-balanced
New Year’s Eve 2020
novelty glasses. Then it
tanked. Hard. So as any
consumer would, I wrote
a letter to the manager.
Obviously the loss of life
and jobs and normalcy
are the most important
things. But I thought I’d
share it with you even
though I have yet to get a
reply.
Dear Sirs,
Your 2020 product is garbage. It doesn’t
work.
Your advertising promised “exciting new
horizons” and “great success”. Nothing like
this has transpired. In fact, 2020 has been the
worst product I’ve ever used.
I understand that the COVID-19 defect has
compromised your product severely but this
isn’t the fault of the consumer. This “coronavirus”
has ruined all of my favorite things. It
has stolen the simple joy of attending a baseball
game. It’s robbed us of the joy of the buffet
restaurant, including the inalienable right
to dip things in a fountain of watery chocolate.
And it has cost us friends and family, for
which I’m sure you’ll be hearing from many
attorneys.
Your “2020 scam” has wrecked organized
sports. It’s damaged every sport I love. An
at-best compromised college football season
is all your fault. Shame on you! Every American
has the right to drink to excess and shout
obscenities at the rival college and its inbred,
lethargic fans. Tailgating wasn’t meant for individually
wrapped foods and staying seated
in your car with the windows up. You ruined
the party, 2020. You are the proverbial turd in
the punchbowl. “Bubble”, “opting out”, “”no
spitting”.... what the HELL have you done?!?!
I don’t even understand these new words! and
now you have worked them into the dictionary?
You are cruel and heartless, 2020.
And another thing, HOW am I supposed to assemble
a Fantasy Football team with players choosing
not to play and no pre-season games to evaluate
talent? What am I supposed to do with this mess
you’ve created, scour the internet for stats on which
tailbacks gain more yards while wearing face coverings?
Trust me, they don’t exist.
And let me tell you something, Mister 2020… thank
god for NASCAR! Were it not for that sport stepping
up and entertaining sports-starved people like
me, I may have actually LIKED marble races.
And yes, I know you are going to say that you
brought up important social justice issues in your
busted 2020. That’s good. I’m very impressed. But
don’t get too big for your overalls, 2020. Those
same issues could have surfaced in the likely 2021
reboot of ‘Different Strokes”.
Perhaps the most unfair element of your defective
2020 product is that it eliminated the Daytona
debut of the Welcome To Rockville Festival. Plans
were made. Bands were booked. Hotels were reserved.
Whiskey was purchased. Then 2020 rolls
in and wipes it all away. I was supposed to play
tennis with LARS FUCKING ULRICH! And please
do not try to replace this experience by offering me
a “make-good” bowling night with Joey Tempest
of EUROPE. I’m not falling for THAT one again.
Tennis was to be played, friendships and bonds were
to be formed, video was to be used against me….
it was ALL so perfectly arranged. And what of the
bands who MIGHT have lost a member at the airport
and needed a fill in rhythm guitarist? I would
have stepped right in but I guess we’ll never know
now will we, 2020?
I demand a refund IN FULL for this sham of a year.
I want reimbursement for the excessive amount of
Gaviscon tablets I’ve had to chew through for the
stressful stomach I’ve incurred. I want the lives and
jobs reinstated, the simple pleasures replaced and
I want a full apology from your manager. Also, I
want perfect vision no longer referred to as “20-20”.
I believe “50-50” should suffice for the ophthalmologist
community. They don’t need the negative stigma
of your broken 2020. I’ll await your response.
Cheers!
