A different kind of back-to-school supplies
Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Eight skids stacked high with cleaning
supplies and personal protective equipment
made their way to Madison County schools
last week, thanks to the Amazon fulfillment
center in West Jefferson.
A month ago, Chris Cook, Madison
County’s health commissioner, reached out
to the distribution giant, asking for help in
preparing area schools for the return of students
and staff. Amazon responded with a
donation of $50,000 worth of supplies.
“They came through in a big way,” Cook
said.
“Amazon prides itself on supporting the
communities where our associates live and
work,” said Jesse Batarseh, general manager
of the fulfillment center. “While this
school year will be different from previous
years, we’re proud to be supporting the efforts
of our local schools to keep students
safe in these difficult times.”
The donation included 720 cans of disinfecting
wipes, 120,000 face masks, 1,728
cans of disinfecting spray and cleaner, and
1,494 large containers of hand sanitizer.
The Madison County Emergency Management
Agency and the Madison County Engineer’s
Office provided vehicles and
manpower to distribute the supplies. The
drops were made on Aug. 24.
Jonathan Alder makes cuts in food service staffing
Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Jonathan Alder Local Schools is reducing
staffing in its food service department in response
to a shortfall in revenue due to
COVID-19.
At a special meeting on Aug. 20, the
school board approved a reduction in hours
for all food service personnel and eliminated
one part-time assistant cook position. The
cuts take effect Oct. 1 and will result in a 35
percent reduction in the overall food service
operating budget.
“To make this recommendation is incredibly
difficult although necessary to provide
and sustain an essential service for our students,”
said Superintendent Gary Chapman.
For more than a decade, the district’s
food service department has been self-sustaining.
That changed this spring after
schools closed due to the pandemic. No students
in school meant no students buying
breakfast or lunch.
“Currently, the department is just over
$62,000 in the red, and this is after an advance
of $50,000 from the general fund (in
June) to start the new fiscal year,” Chapman
said.
District Treasurer Aaron Johnson predicts
the deficit will rise to $75,000 by the
end of the month. To cover the shortfall, the
school board approved another advance, this
time for $75,000.
Prior to the cut in hours and elimination
of one part-time position, the district was
spending $43,284 a month on salaries and
benefits in the food service department.
“We know we need to make some adjustments
and cuts, but also we don’t want to go
too far here because we just don’t know
what type of participation we’re going to
have,” Chapman said.
School leaders will monitor the situation
over the next several months, he added.
Changes will depend in large part on the
county’s status related to COVID-19 and
any county or state directives that change
the course of instruction.
Also at the Aug. 20 meeting, Athletic Director
Mark Fenick talked briefly about
Gov. Mike DeWine’s announcement on Aug.
18 that fall sports can proceed but with re-
Encouraging careful driving
As students return to class, Mount Sterling
village council members are reminding
residents to be cautious on the roadways.
Becky Martin, council president pro-tem,
stood in for Mayor Marci Darlington, who
was out for a family emergency, at the Aug.
24 meeting. Martin made back-to-school
traffic awareness a top priority at the meeting’s
opening.
“The buses will be running. Traffic will
be heavier and slower. You get behind those
buses and we all get frustrated, but please
slow down,” she said. “Please be patient.
There’s nothing more valuable than the
lives of our little ones.”
Martin underscored the comments by referring
to an incident on Aug. 21 in which a
teenage driver struck a 7-year-old girl in one
of the village’s residential neighborhoods.
“Always be a defensive driver and slow down in those areas,”
Martin said, “especially now that school is underway.”
Madison-Plains Local Schools will be returning to classes on
Aug. 31.
Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Jack Dill echoed Martin’s comments,
stating that he would be in the village regularly with a
radar, tracking speeding vehicles.
“I want to give a fair warning to drivers: I’m not going to be giving
warnings. Everything is going to be a citation,” Dill said.
“Mount Sterling villagers will need to mind their p’s and q’s.”
Martin and Dill both spoke of monitoring drivers entering and
exiting the village at high rates of speed. Dill will be watching those
areas.
Also at the Aug. 24 meeting, council announced the formation
of a safety committee.
“The committee will encompass Block Watch, examining safety
issues, traffic issues, policing, possible COVID issues and more,”
Martin said.
The committee will include three council members: Becky Martin,
Jay Pettey and Block Watch member David Timmons. Council
also plans to include three community members on the committee.
In other action, council:
• accepted the 2021 estimated entitlement for the local government
support fund;
• repealed a section of village code titled accessory structures;
• passed an ordinance amending a section of code pertaining to
general requirements for all districts.
The next regular Mount Sterling village council meeting is set
for 7 p.m. Sept. 14.
strictions on spectators.
“The good news is we will have all fall sports in action. The challenge
is adapting and adjusting to the expected criteria and having
people understand that things are going to be significantly different,”
Fenick said.
Dr. Misty Swanger, assistant superintendent, reported that approximately
165 students selected the remote learning option to
start the school year. That represents 7 percent of the district’s student
population. Enrollment in the Digital Academy was finalized
on Aug. 20.
Swanger also noted that school leaders met with substitute
teachers this past week.
“We have a lot of people willing to help and willing to come back,
and we were also about to recruit some other people,” she said.
“Hopefully, we will be in a better position with substitutes. We
know it’s going to be a struggle this year.”
Chapman thanked all members of the district staff for their diligence
and disposition going into the start of this school year. He acknowledged
that the preparation has been intense, and many
staffers are nervous and anxious.
“They just want to make sure they’re doing the right thing to
take care of our kids,” he said.
The first day of school for students is Aug. 24.
The school board’s next regular meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Sept.
14. It will be streamed live on the district’s Facebook page.
