Darfield High School has joined a district-wide kapa haka group
meaning now all four secondary schools are involved. The latest
rehearsal was hosted by Rolleston College. Science teacher and kapa
haka school leader Jamie Buckland said they were pleased to welcome
Darfield High to the group. He said the practice was focused on learning
the waiata aringa (song), Ngā Manu ā Tāne, and the haka wahine
(female haka). The next group practice will be at Lincoln High School. A
performance was planned at Ellesmere College this month but has been
postponed due to Covid-19.
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column
aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of
living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates
Household ant a minor pest
WE HAVE approximately
44 ant species in New
Zealand, however, only a
quarter are endemic to our
shores.
Most of the other 33
introduced species are from
Australia and we can expect
to see more of their massive
1300 species here in the
future with milder winters
and hotter summers.
The black household ant
(Ochetellus glaber) is one
of these ants and was first
recorded in Whangarei in
1927, but by 1943 was well
established in Auckland.
It has slowly moved
south reaching Nelson
around 2005 and Christchurch
around 2013. The
species has been regularly
PROLIFIC: The black
household ant is well
established in New
Zealand.
intercepted from Australia
and is often associated
with plant materials such
as wooden poles, fruits and
plants.
It is also found in China,
India, Japan, the United
States, Philippines, Lord
Howe Island, New Caledonia,
Norfolk Islands, New
Hebrides, Solomon Islands,
India and Réunion.
The worker ants are
brown or black in colour,
2-2.5mm in length and
have 12-segmented antennae.
Ochetellus glaber is an
arboreal nester and can
be observed forming long
trails up trees, fence-posts
and buildings, occasionally
coming inside houses.
The ants are omnivores,
feeding on honeydew
produced by aphids, mealy
bugs and scale insects, but
also dead animals, plants,
seeds and fat.
Although considered
a minor pest, it does not
sting but does have a
characteristic odour when
squashed.
