Adistrict pilotproject<br />
calledKai For Kids launched<br />
at the school in July and<br />
provides adaily lunchoption<br />
for pupils.<br />
The uptake has been high<br />
with mostofthe school’s 150<br />
pupils opting for it.<br />
KaiFor Kids is the<br />
brainchildoflocal<br />
businesswoman Joanne<br />
Taylor and is supportedby<br />
volunteers andwith some<br />
funding.<br />
The aim of theproject is to<br />
gethealthy, nutritiousfood<br />
into the belliesoflocal<br />
children.<br />
MrsTaylor said the project<br />
wasworking well at<br />
Netherbyand she wasin<br />
discussions with other local<br />
schoolsto roll it out.<br />
Shewas also looking at<br />
funding options.<br />
The Netherby School hall<br />
wasnow used forlunch<br />
distribution and volunteers<br />
were enthusiastically<br />
lending ahand, she said.<br />
Checking out Kai For Kids<br />
during avisit to Netherby<br />
lastweek was Christchurch<br />
East MP and Ministerfor the<br />
Community andVoluntary<br />
Sector PotoWilliams and<br />
local Labour List MP Jo<br />
Luxton.<br />
The pair were welcomed<br />
by the school’s Pasifikagroup<br />
and informally discussed<br />
fundingoptionsfor theschool<br />
lunch initiative with Mrs<br />
Taylor.<br />
The lunchmenuincludes<br />
plenty of dishes with disguised<br />
vegetables.<br />
Menuitems include<br />
favouriteslike sausage and<br />
mash, macaroni cheese,chop<br />
suey and buttered chicken.<br />
Foodispreparedinthe<br />
kitchen at the <strong>Ashburton</strong>Trust<br />
Event Centre and anything left<br />
over is made into familypacks<br />
and given to theSEEDS<br />
(sharing everyday experiences<br />
and drawing on skills)<br />
programme to distribute to<br />
clients.<br />

HEBConstruction willestablish abasein<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> afterwinning a$30 million road<br />
maintenance contract in the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
District. The company, which also maintains<br />
local roads in Selwyn and Christchurch,will<br />
use several Mid Canterbury businesses as<br />
subcontractors.<br />
