Robin rolls out new season<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> Club andMSA bowling<br />
section life member Robin Petrie had<br />
the honourofthe first roll at the<br />
club’s opening day at the weekend.<br />
Petrie,84, hasbeen alifemember<br />
since 2016.<br />
He has played for theclub since<br />
1974 after joiningbecause he lived<br />
just afew doors awayfrom the<br />
Racecourse Roadbowlinggreen.<br />
He wasintroduced to thegame<br />
through asocial match hosted by the<br />
SavageClub, of which Petrie has<br />
been amember for 60 years. The<br />
SavageClub hosted abowling match<br />
at thebowlinggreen which played<br />
two bowlers with two nonbowlers;<br />
Petriewas one of the nonbowlers.<br />
Andhewas hooked.<br />
It’sgiven him 46 years of social<br />
enjoyment andalthough he admits to<br />
not being verycompetitive now, he<br />
represented BowlsCanterbury in<br />
fours play, in 1984.<br />
Petrie was among the19members<br />
of the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Club and MSA<br />
bowlingsection who enjoyed game<br />
play and acatchup during the<br />
opening day at their Racecourse<br />
Roadgreen.<br />
The section, which has around 25<br />
members in total, is made up of two<br />
new playersand many seasoned<br />
players, including three Mid<br />
Canterburyrepresentative bowlers.<br />
Veteran bowlerDave Muir said<br />
players were social and competitive,<br />
regularly competing in tournaments<br />
aroundthe district but it wouldbe<br />
great to seeanother20orsoplayers<br />
fronting up to play for the club.<br />
Over winterthe playerstaketo<br />
their clubroomsvenue to play Winter<br />
Bowls,using bigger sized bowls for<br />
indoor play. It helpstokeep bowlers’<br />

as well as keepingplayers socially<br />

Theyalsohosttwo annual<br />
tournaments; the first this Sunday<br />
with 16 teamsentered, andanother<br />
near theend of the season.<br />
Muir said the tournaments were<br />
open to anybowlers Canterburywide<br />
but most who entered were from<br />

Players also headed outofthe district<br />
to play in other tournaments.<br />
Opening day saw members placed<br />
into sixteams of three, enjoy arollup<br />
on the green,before heading indoors<br />
for afternoon tea and acatchup.<br />
Their season runsfrom nowuntil<br />
aroundearly April (Easter weekend)<br />
next year.<br />
Old bikes ready for special spin<br />

was in the 1952 running of the<br />
Christchurch to Waimateroad race,<br />
in which he wasthe fastest juniorin<br />
5hours 45.56minutes and tookhome<br />
theNew Zealand junior road<br />
champion’s title.Brucehas great<br />
memoriesofthe race, which also<br />
featuredhis brotherReg and local<br />
rivalJim Tait.<br />
‘‘The bike’s done thousandsof<br />
miles, including at masters games,’’<br />
Bruce said.<br />
Donald’s 1936 Gloriacycle is also<br />
Italianmadeand haswooden rims,<br />
whichwere used in the early days<br />
until thefirst aluminium rims<br />
appeared at the1934 TourdeFrance.<br />
Wooden rimsstayed aroundthough,<br />
withthe bestriders still using them<br />
as late as 1951.<br />
He said there was agrowing<br />
interestaroundthe world in old road<br />
cycles, with specialracesevenin<br />
NewZealand. In Saturday’s race he<br />
willbewearingaretro woollen jersey<br />
andleather helmet, likethe cyclists<br />
of old.<br />
Donald said whilewheels andbike<br />
frames were mostly the same,<br />
modern daygears, chains and brakes<br />
had advanced light yearsintermsof<br />
technology, though the old cycles<br />
were still asmooth ride.<br />
He is planning to ride hisGloria in<br />
one gear on Saturday so he doesn’t<br />
have to manually put the chainona<br />
differentcog and retensionit.<br />
Race organiser DonKirdysaid it<br />
was importantthat the Tinwald<br />
Cycling Club look afterits history, as<br />
the clubwas planning acentennial on<br />
Waitangiweekend 2023 andwouldbe<br />
showing off cycling gearcollected<br />
over acentury. Pastand present<br />
cyclists should save the date.<br />
