Issue 318
September 2020
Hello Welcome
IT continues to be a very demanding time
for the automotive industry and with just
weeks to go before the Brexit transition
period expires, European automotive
industry leaders have joined forces to
call for the EU and UK to secure a free trade
agreement without delay. We must avoid a ‘no
deal’ situation at all costs. This is of course
extremely concerning news and according
to new calculations, it would cost the pan-
European automotive sector around €110
Billion in lost trade over the next 5 years.
Without a deal in place by December 31st,
it’s reported that both sides would be forced
to trade under the so-called World Trade
Organisation non-preferential rules, which
would include a 10% tariff on cars and up
to 22% on vans and trucks. This will have
an impact on automotive suppliers and their
products which will be hit by tariffs. Production
will be more expensive and this could lead to
more imports of parts from other competitive
countries.
Inside this bumper issue we talk to Neil
Hilton AMIMI CAE Head of HGS, Hella
UK about the IIR (Insurance Industry
Recommendations) document relating to the
approach and methods that should be adopted
to this issue of The Garage
when working or servicing ADAS equipped
vehicles. Neil also gives a brief overview of
ADAS and what it means for the independent
workshop. This is a must read for all garages
as it will guide you through the process and
offer advice on purchasing ADAS equipment.
There is also a comprehensive clutch
replacement feature for a Skoda Rapid 1.6
TDI provided by Schaeffler (UK). REPXPERT,
Alistair Mason provides a detailed technical
guide for the replacement of a clutch that has
reached the end of its service life.
Finally, it is with great sadness that this will
be my last edition of The Garage Magazine
as I am moving on to pastures new. It has
been a fantastic few years and a privilege to
edit an industry icon. I would like to place on
record my sincere thanks to all at Partnership
Publishing who have supported me and made
me feel a part of the family.
Stay safe and well
NEWS 06
VIEW FROM THE TOP
Bill Fennell, Managing Director and Chief
Ombudsman at The Motor Ombudsman,
the independent and impartial
Ombudsman dedicated to the automotive
sector, looks at..
the current landscape, and the outlook
that potentially lies ahead for garages.
AS we approach the final
few months of what has
undoubtedly been a
challenging year, MOTs
continue to dominate the
motoring headlines. During the
past few weeks, the pendulum has
swung from one extreme to the other.
Throughout the peak lockdown
period, many businesses pulled
their shutters down as customer
throughput dried up, and according
to our own YouGov poll, more than
half (56%) of drivers delayed getting
their annual MOT assessment. The
resulting impact of this, is that
millions of MOTs remain outstanding,
and we are now seeing a surge in
demand, as drivers try and get their
MOTs completed, putting pressure on
existing garage capacity.
This is echoed by some of the latest
research conducted by GiPA UK, the
providers of automotive aftermarket
intelligence, which found that MOT
centres in South West London and
Croydon conducted the most tests in
August, at an average of 79 and 64
each respectively. MOT stations in
Reading are also set to increase their
workload from 63 last month to 284
by November, and are predicted to be
amongst the busiest in the country.
The upside of all of this, is that,
in addition to the more routine
maintenance and repairs, most service
and repair businesses and MOT
stations have more than enough work.
It’s a nice problem to have, but on the
flipside, there is still lots more to be
done. One of the main focus points
for garages now needs to be around
ensuring that staff and customers feel
safe interacting with one another when
on site.
Having the necessary PPE and
the other physical and distancing
precautions in place has now become
the new normal, for which we have
very quickly all become accustomed
to. In fact, it’s probably what we
now expect to see in a well-run
business. Just as important is the
communication of key messaging
around safety in ensuring that
customers know that you have put the
necessary safety measures in motion,
thereby giving them the confidence to
get any work on their car completed.
As the furlough scheme comes to an
end in October, another consideration
is having the right staffing levels
(in line with the social distancing
requirements), and technology in place
(i.e. systems to manage bookings and
work efficiently) to help deliver a high
standard of service whilst the upsurge
in demand continues.
When looking at the prospects for
vehicle sales, an air of positivity also
seems to be returning to showrooms,
which is an encouraging sign that
things may be slowly edging back to
what they were. Used car values are
holding firm, and with September
traditionally one of the busiest months
of the year due to the second plate
change, some retailers are looking at a
spike in the volume of new cars being
driven off the forecourts, although the
extent of this rebound may be slightly
hampered by supply issues.
From our own perspective at The
Motor Ombudsman, there is equally
some cause for optimism. After a
noticeable dip between March and
June, traffic to our website and to
our popular Garage Finder, which
lists all the businesses accredited to
our Service and Repair and/or Vehicle
Sales Codes, is back up to pre-Covid
levels. Our online Knowledge Base,
which is regularly updated in line with
government announcements affecting
motorists, is also recording in excess
of 26,000 article views per month - an
encouraging trend.
Another positive is that we have
now launched our inaugural Garage
Star Awards (TheMotorOmbudsman.
org/Awards) to recognise individuals,
teams and businesses that have gone
above and beyond to help consumers,
and we would encourage all of our
accredited businesses to let their
customers know that nominations are
now open.
Looking ahead, the next few months
will undoubtably be challenging, as
we see more local lockdowns coming
into force around the country, as
well as changes to the rules aimed
to reduce the spread of Covid-19,
on what seems to be like a weekly
basis. Nevertheless, it is important
that garages ensure the highest level
of customer service and loyalty. This
means that, when more “normal”
times do finally return, businesses
will have a very solid foundation on
which to build.
New Castrol study reveals
‘tipping points’ to drive mainstream
electric vehicle adoption in the uk
Drivers want EVs priced at £24,000 [1] (or $30,000)
with an average 30-minute charge time and range
of 282 miles (or 453 kilometres)
A
new study released by Castrol draws on the views
of consumers, fleet managers and automotive
industry leaders from across the UK to reveal
the factors driving electric vehicle (EV) buying
decisions.
Accelerating the EVolution reveals that, on average for
UK consumers, a price point of £24,000 (or $30,000), a
charge time of 30 minutes and a range of 282 miles (or 453
kilometres) from a single charge are the ‘tipping points’
to achieve mainstream EV adoption. The research also
estimates that the annual electric vehicle market in the UK
could be worth £13 billion (or $16 billion) by 2025[2] if all
three tipping points are met.
Omer Dormen, VP, Castrol Europe said:
“The automotive industry has been hit hard by the
coronavirus pandemic, but I believe that electric vehicles
have a central role to play in powering the sector’s lowcarbon
recovery. Castrol’s research shows that individual
consumers are positive about making the switch to electric,
but buyers in the UK expect to do so slightly later than
those in other markets, and are keen to pay a bit less.
“As an industry we must focus on the factors that matter
most to consumers. The three tipping points revealed in
Accelerating the EVolution provide a clear roadmap for the
automotive industry to help accelerate mainstream adoption
of EVs.”
Based on research from eight of the world’s most
important electric vehicle markets, Castrol’s study examines
five critical challenges that should be addressed to promote
further growth in the EV market, highlighting the different
priorities for consumers and fleet managers.
Key findings from the opinion research, which was
conducted December 2019 to January 2020, include:
2025 - The year of the EV?
On average, British drivers said they would consider
purchasing an EV by 2025, a year later than the global
average. Almost two-thirds of those surveyed (64%) said
they are adopting a “wait and see” approach. Around 60%
of fleet managers said they are waiting for competitors to
make the switch before they do.
Price is front-of-mind
Price is the number one priority for consumers in the
UK, with 68% saying that EVs are currently beyond their
budget. Once vehicles have an average price tag of £24,000
(or $30,000), UK drivers said they’d be willing to go
electric. This price point is significantly lower than the
global average of £29,000 (or $36,000), suggesting that
British consumers are not willing to pay as much as those
elsewhere.
The study also finds that misconceptions about
maintenance costs could be stopping consumers making
the switch: 62% say that these costs were preventing them
from buying a fully electric car. This suggests that many
consumers are unaware that the overall average cost of
ownership of an EV over its lifetime tends to be lower than
an ICE vehicle.

EVolution
09 CASTROL Advertisement Feature
Demand for shorter charging times
Charge time was identified as the second most important challenge
to the mainstream adoption of EVs, and UK consumers said they
require an average charge time of 30 minutes before they would
consider purchasing an EV. Almost seven in 10 (69%) of those
questioned believe EVs will only dominate on the roads once
they can charge in a similar time as it takes to refuel an internal
combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.
‘Range anxiety’ is real
Range was ranked third on the priority list by UK drivers, with
three in five of those surveyed agreeing that it is a significant barrier
to the mainstream adoption of EVs. On average, they expect a
range of 282 miles (or 453km) from a single charge, approximately
equivalent to the distance from London to Paris. However, we found
that half of consumers don’t drive the full range on one charge
as they mainly use their car for short journeys or commuting,
suggesting that ‘range anxiety’ may only be driving their preference
in part.
Mandhir Singh, Chief Executive Officer
at Castrol said:
“The automotive industry has already demonstrated what it can
achieve in response to the coronavirus pandemic, turning its
capabilities to producing much needed medical equipment. With
EV technology constantly improving, the challenge now will be to
drive a low-carbon recovery and accelerate the EVolution as quickly
as possible. Castrol has been working with the automotive industry
to develop unique e-Fluid technology to support EVs, from battery
coolant e-fluid, e-greases and transmission fluids.”
“Bringing down the cost and charge time for electric vehicles
while increasing range, infrastructure and vehicle choice will be
critical to persuading consumers to make the switch.”
The Accelerating the EVolution report, which includes a full
breakdown of the research and detailed findings, is available to
download here: www.castrol.com/EV.
Castrol e-Fluids range
Using the expertise gained from over a century in the automotive
lubricants sector, Castrol is working to support the automotive
industry as it accelerates towards mainstream adoption of EVs.
Castrol is a global leader in the development of fluids for hybrid
and fully electric mobility solutions, specifically designed to
improve the efficiency and performance of electric vehicles. Over
half of the world’s major vehicle manufacturers now use Castrol
e-Fluids as part of their factory fill.
The Castrol e-Fluid range includes e-Transmission fluids,
e-Coolants and e-Greases. Castrol Transmission e-Fluids help
extend the life of the drivetrain system as it helps the e-motor
run cooler enabling it to operate at high efficiency. Castrol Battery
Coolant E-Fluids keep batteries running cooler, even in extreme
conditions, to maintain optimal performance. Specialist greases are
required for the increasing number of on-board electric motors that
perform a wide range of duties, from providing motive power to
supporting the vehicle’s ancillary services.
Castrol supports leading e-motorsport teams with e-Fluids for
the most demanding electric vehicle racing, including the Panasonic
Jaguar Racing Formula E Team. The company is also an official
partner of the Volkswagen ID.R team, responsible for producing the
car which broke the Tianmen Mountain climb world record and in
2019 broke a 20-year-old record at the annual Goodwood Festival
of Speed hill climb.
ABOUT THE SURVEY
In 2020 we surveyed over 1,000 consumers, fleet managers
and industry specialists across the UK. This was part
of a global EV survey of nearly 10,000 people across
eight of the world’s most important EV markets.
2025
2033
DRIVING CHANGE
According to a new study by Castrol, most
consumers in the UK would consider buying
an EV by 2025, but most also believe that
it won’t be until 2033 that the majority
of new cars purchased are electric.
New electric car record
set by Zero Carbon World
Charity sets new record of 1:31:32 for the shortest EV
charging time between John O’Groats and Land’s End
THE Zero Carbon World team
make it to Land’s End after
just 1h 31m 32s of charging
UK charity Zero Carbon
World set a new record for the
shortest charging time in an EV when
travelling between John O’Groats and
Land’s End on Saturday 12 September
2020. Three representatives from the
charity achieved the record-breaking
time of 1 hour 31 minutes and 32
seconds, smashing the old record by
over two hours.
Zero Carbon World Trustee Dean
Fielding, the charity’s chairman and
ABB FIA Formula E Championship
racing driver Alexander Sims, and EV
specialist David Peilow completed the
855.2-mile (1,376.3 km) journey in
just 15 hours and 32 minutes. In doing
so, they beat the previous record for
the shortest charging time in an EV,
which was set in 2015 and stood at 3
hours 44 minutes and 33 seconds.
“We’re ecstatic to have achieved this
incredible time, which is less than half
that of the previous record,” says Zero
Carbon World Trustee Dean Fielding.
“The attempt was in the planning
for just two weeks, when David
[Peilow] realised that a high-speed
IONITY charger had been installed
in Cullompton, Devon. This made it
possible to attempt a new record with
high-speed charging stations at suitable
points along the way.”
Fielding adds: “Despite our planning
for the record attempt, we feel that this
achievement demonstrates that many
EV drivers could easily make the trip
without significant planning – just plot
it in their satnav and go. Lots of EVs
use the CCS charging standard that we
used along the way. The UK charging
infrastructure has improved to a
degree where such trips can be made,
making EVs a viable and practical
alternative to ICE vehicles. What’s even
more remarkable is that the software
used to calculate the trip suggested we
would need 1 hour and 31 minutes of
charging, and that’s exactly what we
did. The capability to accurately predict
real-world journeys helps eliminate the
anxiety many feel about EVs and range.”
The trio stopped to charge at three IONITY
stations in Perth (Perth and Kinross),
Gretna Green (Dumfries and Galloway), and
Cullompton (Devon), along with one Tesla
Supercharger station in Essington (South
Staffordshire). They were very aggressive in
their charging strategy, only charging to the
absolute minimum amount needed to ensure
they got to the next stop.
“We didn’t overcharge
the car at any time,”
explains Zero Carbon
World chairman,
Alexander Sims. “We
were mostly charging
to somewhere in the 50-
60 per cent region, with
one of our charging stops
taking the car to 80 per cent.
We would make it to the next
charger with around 4-5 per cent
remaining. David did all the calculations for us and it was very
well predicted.”
The journey was undertaken in a standard production Tesla
Model 3 in Performance specification.
“We averaged 6.05km/kWh, with a charging efficiency of 97
per cent,” explains Peilow. “When considering the grid carbon
intensity and losses, we averaged 19.5g CO2/km. The Tesla
Model 3 Performance was chosen for the record attempt due to
its charging capacity, rate and range. Not all EVs could achieve
the charging time we did, but plenty of EV models are capable of
comfortably making the epic road trip, simply by charging to 80
per cent rather than our minimal charges.
“Since I last made this journey back in 2011, the charging
infrastructure has improved dramatically across the UK. Highspeed
charging networks such as IONITY use the CCS charging
standard that many EVs use. It’s fantastic to see the national
charging network growing in the UK and across Europe to make
such long journeys easy and accessible for more EV drivers.”
The record attempt couldn’t have been completed without the
support of the EV community, says Sims: “Thank you to the
fantastic support that we received at each charging station from
fellow EV drivers. They helped us to gather all the required data,
images and video in order to fully catalogue the record attempt,
and we will be submitting this to Guinness World Records with
the hope that it will be able to validate the attempt in the coming
weeks.”
Vredestein Quatrac
new evolution in growing all-season segment
IN a European all-season segment
that grew by 23% percent last year,
Vredestein continues to evolve its
products and underline its allseason
expertise. After being the
first brand to launch an all-season tyre
for high-end performance cars in 2019
with the Quatrac Pro, the brand is now
renewing its portfolio in the segment for
smaller inch sizes by launching the new
Vredestein Quatrac.
As one of the first companies to
introduce all-season tyres, Vredestein
now benefits from over 28 years of
experience in producing all-season
tyres. Today the brand has the largest
all-season portfolio in the European
market and was named ‘All-Season
Manufacturer of the Year’ by Autobild
in October 2019. To retain its leading
position and perform at the top in the
European tyre tests, Vredestein has
further evolved its products within the
market for smaller inch sizes, which
have nowadays become a commodity.
NEXT LEVEL PERFORMANCE
WITH SMART SOLUTIONS
With the new Quatrac (15-16 inch),
Vredestein offers a well-balanced tyre
for all seasons. It also ensures a lower
environmental impact by providing
fuel savings thanks to the tyre’s lighter
weight and lower rolling resistance.
The Quatrac combines excellent winter
and summer characteristics in keeping
with Vredestein’s established know-how,
along with the use of all-new materials
and a few clever tweaks to boosts
performance to a new level.
Both shoulders of the tyre are now
suited for summer use, while the centre
of the tyre is more winter-focused, with
a higher sipe density for better traction.
The number of shoulder blocks is
scaled to tyre diameter to ensure a
superior performance in winter. The
tyre also sports a deep-V-shaped profile,
perfected by fine-tuning angles and air
ratio.

13 NEWS
DIFFERENT R&D APPROACH
Vredestein’s all-season R&D team
optimised the tyre in various areas,
taking a different approach to suit
the segment for lower inch sizes.
For instance, with the development
of the Quatrac Pro the team started
with the tyre’s summer properties
and added winter features, driven by
specific requirements for ultra-high
performance cars. Now, with the Quatrac
being a tyre specifically designed for
smaller inch sizes, development focus
was on the most effective design for this
segment resulting in the deep-V-shape
and reduced number of sipes
IMPROVEMENTS COMPARED
TO PREDECESSOR
The new Quatrac performs 12% better
than its predecessor, the Quatrac 5,
in terms of dry handling thanks to
the higher net contact area and stiffer
shoulder blocks. Its silica-based
compound and V-shaped pattern
ensure 20% better wet handling
and 10% better wet braking
performance. And it ensures
5% better handling on snow
by deploying 10% more snowcutting
edges optimised for all
steering angles.
The new-generation tread
compound is enhanced with
a high quantity of terpenebased
resins. The reduced air
ratio and the optimised tyre
cavity leads to a more uniform
pressure distribution, ensuring
more even tyre wear and results
in an improvement in lifespan of
more than 20%. Finally, the new
Quatrac has up to 10% better rolling
resistance, providing substantial fuel
savings.
The Vredestein Quatrac was
specifically designed for European
roads and comes with the three-peak
mountain snowflake symbol, certifying
its suitability for use throughout the
winter and across Europe.
The new Quatrac comes in 15” and
16” inches with 39 sizes in first phase
during September and October, a
further extension will then follow in the
beginning of 2021. Deliveries will start
September 7th.
Wheel bearings are a safety critical component,
so there are some really good reasons why
FAG bearings are tested, approved and
originally fitted around the world.
One reason is our innovative LFT sealing
technology that reduces bearing friction
by >30%, cutting CO 2 emissions and fuel
consumption by >1%. Cheaper bearings might
not conform to the many rigorous standards
that FAG has to meet as an OE supplier, so put
your trust in the original manufacturer.
NEWS 14
NSK DEVELOPS
ULTRA-HIGH-SPEED
BALL BEARINGS FOR
EV MOTORS
NSK has developed a
new ball bearing that,
thanks to its ultrahigh-speed
capability,
is ideal for use in the
traction motors of electric and
hybrid vehicles. As well as allowing
electric motors to operate at higher
speeds, the new bearing improves
fuel economy (reduced power
consumption per unit distance),
supports the increase of vehicle
range and contributes to better
user comfort.
To enhance global sustainability,
the automotive industry is rapidly
expanding the development and
production of electric and hybrid
vehicles. However, the maximum
achievable range on a single charge
remains a concern for consumers.
As a result, automakers are
pursuing smaller and lighter
components, and developing faster,
higher output motors. Accordingly,
the bearings used in powertrains,
especially in electric motors, are
being subjected to increasingly
higher speeds and performance
demands.
Bearing rotation during highspeed
operation can cause
problems such as grease
deterioration due to elevated
operating temperatures, resulting
in bearing seizure/failure.
Higher speeds can also lead to
the bearing cage being deformed or
destroyed by centrifugal forces.
To help counter these issues,
the new NSK bearing is filled with
a proprietary grease that reduces
heat generation at high rotational
speeds, prolonging both grease
and bearing life, and reducing
the risk of seizure compared with
conventional products.
In addition, a newly developed
cage is deployed with retainer
tabs that are not only thinner and
lighter, but reduce the potential
for cage deformation or breakage.
This innovation is supported by a
new design of cage base (spine) and
a newly developed cage material
made from high-rigidity resin,
which offers further heat resistance
at the elevated speeds found in EV
motors.
The combination of proprietary
NSK grease and newly developed
cage enables bearing operation at
dmN(1) = 1.4 million. To provide
a practical example, this worldleading
measure of rotational
performance means one of NSK’s
new 35 mm bore diameter bearings
can operate reliably at speeds of
30,000 rpm.
As a result of this advance in
bearing technology, automotive
customers can develop and
implement electric motors that
operate at significantly higher
speeds. High motor output
contributes to the utilisation of
smaller motors, reduced vehicle
weight and increased space for
other components, such as more
battery cells, for example, or the
use of a larger vehicle interior.
In turn, lower fuel consumption,
extended vehicle range and/or
improved comfort can be achieved.
NFDA EV Group
meets to discuss
key issues facing
dealers and
provide NFDA
with industry
insights
The National Franchised Dealers
Association (NFDA) EV group was
established in 2019 to support
dealers’ efforts in the EV sector
and, in turn, provide NFDA with
feedback on the key issues facing
the industry that the association
can use in support of its
lobbying efforts with the relevant
Government departments.
The launch of the EV Group
coincided with the significant
growth of the NFDA’s Electric
Vehicle Approved (EVA) scheme
launched by NFDA and endorsed
by the Energy Saving Trust (EST)
as well as the Government’s Office
for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV)
in 2019.
Today’s NFDA EV Group meeting
discussed key regulatory changes
and announcements facing dealers
including the consultation on
ending the sale of petrol, diesel
and hybrid cars, and vans in 2035,
CO2 emissions regulations after
Brexit and Clean Air Zones.
The investments required by
dealers as well as the issues
affecting their relationship with
manufacturers were also discussed
at the meeting.
NFDA provided attendees with
an update on the EVA scheme and
Dr Thomas Baxter FIChemE gave
his views on the future for Battery
Electric vehicles and Hydrogen
Fuel Cell Cars, and the potential
implications for dealers.
Sue Robinson, NFDA Director,
said, “Franchised dealers continue
to make significant efforts to
support the transition to a zeroemission
market and offset the
barriers currently perceived by
consumers in the EV sector.
“The NFDA EV Group has been
instrumental in supporting dealers
and providing us with key insights
to back our lobbying efforts.
“Going forward, we will continue
to work closely with our members
to assist them during this crucial
market transition by addressing
the issues facing them with both
Government and manufacturers”.

RFT MOVES FORWARD
WITH NEW UK
MARKETING PARTNER
PERFORMANCE PARTS RFT, the
UK distributors for all passenger car
products from the famous Koni shock
absorber brand, are stepping up their
marketing activities with new campaigns
in planning and the appointment
of automotive PR and marketing
specialists, Chicane.
Koni has been in business since
1857 and producing performance
shock absorbers since the 1930s. RFT,
which was set up in 2016 to handle
Koni distribution in the UK, is about to
celebrate its fourth anniversary with the
brand. The team behind RFT, however,
has had an involvement with Koni in the
UK that stretches back for more than
thirty years.
RFT Managing Director, David
Russell and his family, were owners
of UK motor factor group, Camberley
Auto Factors, who became distributors
for Koni in 1986. “Our experience with
Koni, combined with years of having
worked in the performance parts sector,
means we are in an excellent position
to move the brand forward. The Koni
product range has expanded notably
in recent years and is still finding new
parts of the market to serve.”
Koni today encompasses many
different product categories within the
shock absorber arena, with more than
a dozen different types of products -
each aimed at a particular sector of the
performance market. The ranges start
with the STR.T “Street” Dampers and
run, via the Koni Classic range - which
helps give classic cars better handling &
ride - and Koni’s specialist 4x4 ranges
of Heavy Track and Raid, through
to its high-performance Sport and
Special Active ranges the benchmark in
adaptive suspension.
RFT’s work with Koni also extends
to providing product in the light
commercial vehicle sector, camping and
caravanning markets and in historic
racing with Formula One, being a
specialist area where Koni is still the
benchmark and where RFT provides a
bespoke service via its dedicated service
network.
RFT also stocks complementary
product ranges, such as Ferodo DS
brake pads, for fast road and track day
applications as well as a selected range
of Champion ignition products and its
own brand of ReFiT suspension bushes
& bush kits, which focus mainly on 4x4
applications, with an ever-increasing
range of cars catered for.
“Appointing Chicane represents a
conscious decision to move Performance
Parts RFT towards a new level of
business,” continues David Russell. “In
its sector, Koni is an iconic brand that
has become a bit of a sleeping giant, so
we thought that the time was right, with
the product offer it now encompasses,
to raise its profile in the UK and, at the
same time, move forward with our other
product ranges.”
The complete wiper
solution
for winter
With the season now
changing and the
weather going from
heatwaves to rain,
it’s more important
than ever to appraise and potentially
replace the wiper blades. As they are
the driver’s main defence against
rain to allow them to see clearly, it’s
vital that they get them checked in
preparation for Winter.
Being constantly exposed to
changing weather conditions and
temperatures, over time the rubber on
the blade will inevitably deteriorate,
which could affect visibility and
potentially become dangerous, not
just for the driver, but other road
users as well. It is therefore best
practice to change wipers annually
as a matter of course and not leave
them to deteriorate to the point
where smearing impacts the driver’s
visibility.
With a Borg & Beck blade, each is
supplied with a complete selection of
fitting adaptors to ensure the widest
possible vehicle coverage for minimum
stock investment. All the blades are
manufactured from 100% natural
rubber, with a liquid graphite coating
that not only delivers a smooth,
streak-free and silent operation, but
has the additional benefit of providing
excellent longevity.
The conventional blades are
available in sizes from 11 to 28
inches, while the spoiler blades,
which are mainly fitted on the driver’s
side and ensure extra contact, and
therefore improved visibility, especially
at motorway speeds, are available in
lengths from 18 to 28 inches. Both
feature a high strength zinc galvanised
steel frame and stainless-steel
backing, which means they are robust,
while remaining corrosion free.
For superior all-weather
performance combined with the most
up to date aesthetics, the Borg & Beck
flat blade features a unique design
with a flatter spoiler, which minimises
drag but maximises screen-clearing
performance. Not only incorporating
the liquid graphite coating, these
blades also come with a multi
functioning mounting base and clips,
for easy fitment and are available from
15 to 30 inches.
Also in range are the 16 to 28 inch
hybrid blades, which provide drivers
with a modern replacement to a
conventional blade that combines
the aerodynamic properties of the
flat blade and the reliable wiping
performance of a traditional blade. Its

17 NEWS
stylish look comes from an integrated
spoiler that runs the whole length
of the blade, which reduces wind
lift at high speed, whilst providing a
constant downforce for an even load
distribution across the windscreen.
This design offers a chatter free,
smooth wiping action, which prolongs
the life of the blade and has become
the choice blade for many, whether
that’s as a direct replacement or to
replace the conventional blades that
were fitted as standard.
No range is complete without a rear
blade offering and the high strength
zinc galvanised frame with UV coating
and liquid graphite coated blade,
combined with multiple mounting
clips, means that these blades make
the ideal rear wiper replacement
and provide the final element in the
premium quality Borg & Beck wiper
blade range. Sizes range from 8 to 16
inch.
Wiper motors
Availability is key in the aftermarket
and Borg & Beck has found that, due
to vehicle defects, some motors are
more prone to failure than others. For
instance, the Renault Clio wiper motor
(FWM1004/BWM1004) fails as a result
of being submerged in water due to a
blocked drain channel, it is therefore
recommended that technicians check
this when vehicles come into the
workshop, especially during Winter.
To resolve the situation, technicians
obviously need to replace the wiper
motor, but during the procedure,
must also remember to clear the
blockage. In addition, proactive
workshops would do well to advise
the customer to keep an eye on the
situation to ensure it is kept free of
debris and able to drain properly.
Nissan Qashqai
On most cars, the most common
cause of the wiper motor failure is
because linkages wear, which leads
to the ball joints popping off their
sockets, bringing the wiper blades
to a complete stop. However, with
this popular, first generation Nissan
Qashqai there is another big problem
to be aware of.
Reacting to the high demand
for replacement motors for this
vehicle, the First Line product
team investigated the problem and
discovered an oversight made during
the design and specification of the
vehicle at original equipment level,
which results in the output shaft
seizing, due to the build-up of rust.
This is caused because the output
shaft is neither sealed nor lubricated
and due to its location, following heavy
rainfall, water is able to penetrate
between the shaft and motor housing,
which allows rust to accumulate. As
the rust builds up, the motor is put
under stress as it contends with the
rising levels of friction on the shaft
to keep the wipers moving, until
the point when the increased load
is drawing a current greater than
30amps, which is when the wiper
motor’s fuse will blow.
In addition, should the water that
has penetrated between the shaft and
housing freeze or the wiper blades
freeze to the windscreen and are not
freed before the wipers are switched
on, the excessive load on the motor
may also induce premature failure.
As wiper blades are a crucial
safety feature, technicians should be
checking them and the mechanism,
including the motor, on every vehicle
as part of the service inspection.
Regardless, it is however advised
by Borg & Beck that this time of the
year is the best time to replace Wiper
Blades, as this is when they are going
to be in need the most.
ECOBAT Battery Technologies
(ECOBAT) has been serving
the UK aftermarket for
nearly 70 years, although
the company was founded
as Manchester Batteries in 1952 by
Harry Pemberton in Abergele, North
Wales the business steadily grew and
opened more branches throughout
England, Wales and Scotland.
Manchester Batteries was rebranded
as Manbat in 1996 was then bought
by the ECOBAT Group in 2009 and
under the leadership of UK MD Steve
Sheppard, the company continued
to grow, and an industrial division
was created to service the industrial
market.
By 2016, the newly rebranded
ECOBAT Battery Technologies had
grown into a pan-European company
with sites in France and the Benelux
region. In 2019, it acquired Europa
Batteries in ROI and now, ECOBAT is
pleased to announce the opening of a
new branch in Northern Ireland.
In August 2020, ECOBAT acquired
Easystart Ireland. Easystart Ireland
NEWS
ECOBAT BATTERY TECHNOLOGIES
– IRELAND
is a well-established business
that serves a range of businesses
throughout Ireland. This acquisition
is hugely positive, not only for
Easystart Ireland’s customers, but
also for ECOBAT’s customers in the
area, as they will benefit from an
enhanced delivery service, increased
stock availability, as well as a highly
knowledgeable local team.
The new branch, located in
Crumlin, Co Antrim, will be headed
by Colin Watterson who has worked in
the battery industry for more than 20
years. Colin will be joined by Jim and
David who both also have extensive
knowledge of the battery market.
Colin says: “ECOBAT’s acquisition
of Easystart Ireland is a mutually
very positive opportunity. Easystart
Ireland’s customers will have a greatly
enhanced choice of products with the
introduction of quality brands such
as Lucas VARTA, Exide, Odyssey,
Optima, and US batteries.”
ECOBAT’s General Manager, Kevin
Wood echoes Colin’s statement saying:
“We’re thrilled to have Colin and his
team on board. We’re proud to now
have ECOBAT sites in all UK regions;
this acquisition, along with the
excellent service available from our
Portlaoise site, will ensure our brands
are easily and readily available to all.”
Sales Director, Paul Payne says:
“This is a great opportunity for the
aftermarket in Ireland to access
brands that weren’t previously easily
available to them. We’re looking
forward to working with Colin, Jim
and David and warmly welcome them
into the ECOBAT family.”
NGK Spark Plugs to
help garages profit
from rise in MoTs
NTK – the vehicle electronics brand of NGK Spark Plugs
– is this month (September) stepping up its campaign
to urge garages to be prepared for a surge in demand
for MoTs which are set to double this autumn with an
additional 1.7 million expected in October alone.
Motorists were granted COVID-19 led MoT exemptions from
March 30 until August 1 with the exemptions beginning to
expire this autumn which is already a busy time for MoT
testing.
Garages and MoT specialists are being encouraged to
book vehicles in early for their MoTs in order to avoid
disappointment and to ensure they keep their customers on
the road.
It is estimated more than 140,000 vehicles will fail on
emissions in October alone and NGK is making it even more
attractive for garages to fit NTK Lambda sensors to cope
with the inevitable increased demand.
NGK is the world’s largest manufacturer of Lambda
sensors under the NTK brand and is an original equipment
(OE) supplier to many of the world’s leading vehicle
manufacturers (VMs), with the same components being
supplied to the UK automotive aftermarket.
Throughout September and October the company is
increasing the level of reward points for NTK Lambda
sensors through its market leading garage reward
programme BoxClever, from 100 to 1000 points per sensor!
Garages are encouraged to insist on NTK Lambda sensors to
ensure they benefit from the temporary increase in points.
Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs
(UK) Ltd, said: “As we enter autumn, demand for MoTs is
unprecedented. We believe that with more than 140,000
vehicles likely to fail the emissions element of the MoT test
in October alone there will be an increase in demand for
Lambda sensors and with our BoxClever bonus points offer
starting this month there’s never been a better time to fit
NTK Lambda sensors.”
NTK is the World’s No.1 in engine sensors and during
September and October the BoxClever bonus points
offer of 1000 points also extends to NTK exhaust gas
temperature sensors (EGTS), which monitor the exhaust gas
temperatures to enable the efficient operation and protection
of vital components, and NOX sensors, which work in
conjunction with associated exhaust after-treatment devices.
There are good reasons why NTK Lambda sensors are the
No.1 choice of VMs around the world, they are ‘Similar but
different’.
NGK says the experience it has in supplying the VMs
worldwide allows it to offer exactly the right sensor for every
vehicle application. The company says distributors should
encourage garages to always go with a bespoke OE-quality
Lambda sensor and steer well clear of ‘universal sensors.’
THE IGA IS RELEASING THE GARAGE GUIDE TO ONLINE PRESENCE
The Independent Garage Association
(IGA) is releasing the Garage Guide to
Online Presence to help independent
garages promote their own image and
online presence, negating the need
to rely on third-party work provision
companies.
The 68-page guide contains step-bystep
instructions on how to develop
company branding, set up a website
and social media pages, create Google
Business and Maps listings, learn
about online marketing methods,
collect analytics and respond to
reviews.
Stuart James, IGA CEO, said:
“Events in recent months have shown,
more than ever, the importance
of having an online presence to
communicate with customers and
generate business.
“While third-party work provider
websites are a tempting, easy option
for independent garages to maintain
visibility online, they stifle brand
identities and create a barrier between
garages and their customers, all while
charging expensive rates.
“The Garage Guide to Online
presence will give independent garages
the knowledge and confidence to create
a new profile or expand their existing
online branding without the need to
rely on work providers, helping their
business thrive while saving money on
marketing.”
The Garage Guide to Online Presence
will be distributed as a paperback
book to IGA members this month.

QA &
The
The Garage speaks with Neil Hilton AMIMI CAE. Head of HGS, Hella UK about
the importance of the IIR document and ADAS to the independent garage.
• What is IIR?
The IIR Document is the Insurance Industry
Recommendations and relates to the approach and methods
that should be adopted when working or servicing an ADAS
equipped vehicle to ensure the vehicle is returned in a fully
functioning and safe operational condition. This document
is a great start point and a line in the sand, that no doubt
will be amended going forward to facilitate the ongoing
changes in vehicle ADAS systems and fitment.
• Why is the IIR so important?
It is important that workshops follow the guidance within
the IIR to ensure a vehicle is returned in a fully functioning
and safe condition. It outlines the procedures to identify if
a vehicle is firstly, fitted with any ADAS systems and more
importantly the course of action required to complete the
repair in a safe manner before returning to the customer.
The IIR is also beneficial as it standardises the approach
that everyone should take as the norm and ensures the
integrity of the systems as the manufacturer intended.
• What did you help with on the IIR?
As the pioneers of Aftermarket ADAS Calibration
Equipment, Hella Gutmann Solutions have a long standing
and close relationship with Thatcham Research, initially
working with the engineering division at Thatcham to
investigate calibration procedures and requirements,
progressing to be a member on the ADAS Steering Group
which finalised the ADAS Code of Practise for the Glazing
Industry several years ago. The Steering Group was also
instrumental on finalising the latest document the IIR, HGS
supplied calibration equipment for the Thatcham Research
test track testing to confirm that aftermarket equipment has
the capability to restore ADAS functionality that meets OE
requirements.
• Give a brief overview of ADAS and what
that means for the independent workshop
ADAS can comprise of a number of various systems, from
Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection
and Lane Departure to Adaptive Headlight Control. The
systems can function independently or in many cases in
fusion with each other to not only make driving the vehicle
more pleasurable but importantly far safer, bearing in mind
that 96% of all accidents involve human error as a factor
ADAS systems are instrumental in improving road safety.
Independent Workshops need to embrace this technology as
this will undoubtably impact on virtually all their everyday
procedures.

25 FEATURE ADAS
• Why should workshops invest in
recalibration equipment?
It is important that workshops consider investing in their
own calibration equipment to facilitate a one stop service
to their customers, along with reduced key to key times
and futureproof their own business. As an alternative,
workshops could have a business relationship with a friendly
nearby workshop equipped with calibration equipment or a
mobile calibration company that can complete any repairs
by performing a final ADAS system calibration, but critically
the liability still rests with the original workshop taking on
the work. Whilst this would be a good short term solution
to comply with the IIR, it will be inevitable due to the rapid
growth in ADAS fitment that workshops will need to consider
their own investment in equipment to be self-sufficient.
• What equipment MUST workshops have?
HGS have various ADAS packages available that start with
a range of diagnostic devices capable of performing ADAS
calibration on manufacturers such as Ford, BMW, Vauxhall
and Volvo without the need for additional hardware. For other
manufacturers that use a static calibration process there is
additional hardware requirements, the CSC Tool (Camera
and Sensor Calibration) this uses vehicle specific targets
and radar panels to calibrate the specific systems. These
calibration systems are modular based and can be bespoke
and supplied exactly to the requirements from the customer,
ADAS starter kits can be purchased for as little as £8k which
would give a workshop reasonable calibration capability
that could be extended to suit individual demand based on
vehicles and systems passing through the workshop.
• Are workshops liable for ADAS-related
accidents?
Workshops have always had a responsibility and duty of care
to return a vehicle in a safe operating condition but with the
release of the IIR Document this is now even more important
to avoid potential claims or legal action against their business.
If a vehicle is involved in an accident that should have been
avoided with a particular ADAS system intervention then
clearly there will be serious questions raised as to why this
was not the case.

The complete ADAS calibration solution
Audatex helps bodyshops meet
the new Thatcham IIR requirements
A
Vehicle Health Check
(VHC) by Solera Audatex
is helping repairers meet
the new repair standards
in the Thatcham Research
Insurance Industry Requirements (IIR)
that come into effect from March 2021.
The Audatex VHC2 diagnostic unit
provides a simple way to complete the
new pre- and post-repair IIR in-house
checks.
The Thatcham Research IIR has been
developed to ensure the safe repair of
vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver
Assistance Systems (ADAS). The move
comes as the number of ADAS-enabled
vehicles on United Kingdom roads
reaches 4.5 million, a figure likely to
grow as driver-assistance technology
advances.
The new requirements call for
repairers to use a diagnostic tool,
to identify the presence of ADAS
technology on a vehicle and ensure
it is recorded while completing all
relevant inspections, realignments, and
calibration activities as detailed within
repair procedures. They should also
complete post-repair scans to confirm
the vehicle will be returned to the road
in pre-accident condition.
The Audatex VHC2 diagnostic unit
is a Wi-Fi-enabled tablet that connects
to vehicles via a Bluetooth Vehicle
Communications Interface (VCI).
Coverage goes across more than 60
vehicle makes throughout Europe and
additional ADAS calibration kits are
available via RED Diagnostics.
VHC2 allows repairers to complete
the Thatcham IIR checks in-house,
starting with a VIN registration lookup.
The pre- and post-repair diagnostic
reports can be easily shared directly
from the tablet with existing Audatex
assessments, to provide the required
IIR evidence that safety checks have
taken place. The existing integration
will save significant time and ensure
required evidence can easily be attached
to the insurance assessment. The
whole process creates a new revenue
opportunity for repairers while meeting
the new regulations.
The regulations set out for
inspection, realignment, and calibration
of ADAS-technology in all repair
situations for specified operations
must be completed post-repair to
confirm sensors are functioning within
the vehicle manufacturer’s technical
specifications.
The required repair plan must
include a pre-repair diagnostic scan
and visual inspection to identify ADAS
functionality. Details of the repairer,
work undertaken, tools used, and
proof of competence of the operator
should also be recorded. Audatex VHC2
provides a simple solution to meet these
requirements. Audatex has also found
most insurance partners, along with the
introduction of the new IIR standards,
are now accepting diagnostic scans
and reset charges within the Audatex
assessment, recognising the importance
these have in ensuring safe repairs.
VHC2 is available via a lease option with
all Audatex software and data updates
included as standard. A single site only
needs to complete five pre- and postrepair
diagnostic scans a month to
quickly recuperate operational costs.
“We welcome the introduction of IIR
and are supporting customers across
the UK and Ireland as they prepare for
the introduction of the new standards
in March 2021,” said Stewart Myles,
head of crash repair and business
development at Audatex. “The VHC2
Diagnostic tablet combines the latest
technology and unrivalled data to
make the process straightforward and
efficient. By keeping diagnostic scans
in-house, it will help reduce key-to-key
delays.”

FEATURE ADAS 28
SuperTracker
NINETY FOUR percent of all road accidents are caused by human error – either dangerous
choices or mistakes made behind the wheel - and the European Council are looking to reduce
this significantly by introducing new rules by 2022. These will apply to UK drivers
whether we leave the EU or not.
Under these new rules, new vehicles registered in 2022
and beyond must be equipped with the following safety
features:
• Intelligent speed assistance
• Alcohol interlock installation facilitation
• Driver drowsiness and attention warning systems
• Advanced driver distraction warning systems
• Emergency stop signals
• Reversing detection systems
• Event data recorders
• Accurate tyre pressure monitoring.
And for cars and vans:
• Advanced emergency braking systems
• Emergency lane-keeping systems
• Enlarged head impact protection zones capable
of mitigating injuries in collisions with vulnerable
road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists
In 2020, fifty percent of new registered cars were
equipped with ADAS (advanced driver-assistance
systems) such as the ones mentioned above, but with
these new rules looming, this percentage is set to shoot
up.
ADAS are proven to reduce road fatalities by
Thermal
management
and electric
vehicles
When it comes to electric vehicles, controlling
the hot and cold currents is the key to optimizing
performance, cruising range, and service life.
MAHLE has already developed numerous
innovations for the thermal soaking of batteries in
electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
AS of this year, with the
acquisition of Behr Hella
Service, MAHLE offers
workshops a worry-free
package for thermal
management for all types of drive.
MAHLE is also committed to
developing alternative drive systems,
power electronics, and electric
auxiliaries for every vehicle type –
from passenger cars and commercial
vehicles through machinery to
e-scooters. In short, if it says
“e-mobility” on the outside, it has
MAHLE on the inside.
At the beginning of 2019, the
number of electric cars worldwide
had risen to 5.6 million. This
represented an increase of 64 percent
compared with the previous year. If
this trend continues, we’ll be seeing
an enormous number of hybrids
and electric cars in workshops in
ten years’ time. One thing is already
certain: Thermal management will
play a vital role and this is an area
where MAHLE can provide optimal
support.
Key components for high voltage
thermal systems in electric vehicles
include:
Battery cooler
Battery segments and cooling plates
form a permanently fixed module.
Coolant flows through the cooling
plates. If the cooling capacity is
insufficient – e.g., because of high
outside temperatures – the coolant
temperature is further reduced via the
chiller.
Chiller
A special heat exchanger that further
reduces the temperature of the coolant
for the battery. Here’s how it works: the
coolant flowing through the battery’s
cooling plates is cooled down further
in the chiller as the refrigerant from
the air-conditioning system, which also
flows through the chiller, evaporates.
Electric compressor
Thanks to the electrically driven
e-compressor, the air-conditioning
can operate even when the engine is
switched off.
Low-temperature radiator
The coolant temperature for the
electric motor, battery, and power
electronics is maintained at below 60°C
inside a separate cooling circuit using a
low-temperature radiator.
E-coolant pump
Electric coolant pumps with
integrated control are gradually
activated depending on the cooling
capacity required. They can be used
as main, minor, or circulation pumps
and operate independently of the
engine.
High-voltage coolant auxiliary
heater
When temperatures become too low,
the coolant is heated via an electric
auxiliary high-voltage heater. This is
integrated in the cooling circuit.
The electric drive of a hybrid or
electric vehicle is designed for peak
performance. Consequently, they
require high-voltage systems with
voltages from 30 to 1,000 VAC or 60
to 1,500 VDC. This makes the correct
temperature control of the system
and the individual components all the
more important.
The temperature of the electric
motor and power electronics must
be kept below 60°C and the battery
temperature between 15°C and
30°C. This means that additional
heating is needed in winter to keep
the battery warm, whereas cooling is
required in summer. Cooling is also

31 NEWS
needed while the battery is charging
and discharging. The electric motor
and power electronics must also
be cooled. And don’t forget that the
passenger cabin needs to be heated
in winter and air conditioned in
summer. This calls for a sophisticated
system.
This system, also known as
direct battery cooling, is primarily
found in hybrid vehicles. The main
components are the condenser,
evaporator, and battery unit,
consisting of battery cells, a cooling
plate, and an electric auxiliary
heater. The system is supplied fully
by the refrigerant circuit of the airconditioning
system and controlled
separately via valves and temperature
sensors.
Purely electric cars with highperformance
batteries require more
elaborate thermal management.
The coolant- and refrigerant-based
system, also called indirect battery
cooling, has three circuits. Two of
these have a low-temperature radiator,
a coolant pump, a thermostat,
and a coolant shut-off valve. The
third circuit is a conventional air
conditioning system. If outside
temperatures are low, a high-voltage
coolant heater warms the battery.
When temperatures become
too high, it is cooled via a low
temperature radiator.
The coolant temperature for
the electric motor and the power
electronics is maintained at below
60°C inside a separate circuit (inner,
mid-blue circuit) using a lowtemperature
radiator. If the outside
temperatures are particularly high,
the air conditioning system provides
extra cooling for the battery.
Here, the refrigerant of the air
conditioning system flows through
an additional heat exchanger, the
chiller, and further cools down the
coolant, which also flows through the
chiller. The system is controlled with
thermostats, sensors, pumps, and
valves.
The growing influence of A/C
The air conditioning system actively
supports the battery cooling. That’s
why the air conditioning check will
play an even more important role
in the future. Keeping the battery at
the right temperature has a major
influence on the cruising range of
the electric vehicle and the battery’s
service life.
IMI
response
to Unite
electric
vehicle
statement
STEVE NASH, CEO, The Institute
of the Motor Industry responds
to Unite statement about electric
vehicle infrastructure:
“Unite quite rightly highlights
the critical issue of infrastructure
for widespread electric vehicle
adoption, in response to the
SMMT’s latest report. As the IMI
has stated repeatedly, government
also needs to focus attention
on ensuring the right skills are
in place across the automotive
aftermarket sector, so that electric
vehicles can be handled safely by
automotive workers, in turn giving
motorist’s confidence in this new
technology.
“As we advance towards a zeroemission
future, the technology
that technicians will be coming
into contact with on a daily
basis is changing – resulting in
high voltage electrics becoming
commonplace. Motorists driving
electrified vehicles want to know
that they are handing over their
vehicle to someone who has the
right skills. Those who aren’t
properly trained or equipped
to work on electrified vehicles
would be risking serious injury or
potentially fatal shock. “The IMI
TechSafe standards, endorsed
by OLEV at the end of 2019,
mean that electrified vehicle users
can access the IMI Professional
Register to check the electric
vehicle technical competencies of
technicians at their local garage.
“This is a crucial step in giving
car buyers confidence that their
electric vehicle can be serviced,
maintained and repaired by a
garage with the right skills –
and that removes a key barrier
to EV adoption. But it’s also
important that government looks
at investment in skills training to
support a sector that is currently
severely depleted by COVID-19,
to ensure its zero emissions goals
can be achieved.”

FEATURE The Clutch 32
ŠKODA RAPID
1.6 TDI CLUTCH
REPLACEMENT
REPXPERT, Alistair Mason, replaced the clutch on a ŠKODA
Rapid 1.6 TDI. The vehicle had covered more than 110,000
miles, and the clutch had reached the end of its service life,
with the clutch starting to ‘slip’.
WITH a book time of five
hours and only basic
workshop required, this
is a great repair for any
independent workshop.
Full repair instructions can be obtained
from REPXPERT, Schaeffler’s workshop
information portal, while quick
reference information can be found on
Schaeffler’s REPXPERT app.
Gearbox removal
With the vehicle positioned on a vehicle
lift – either a two-post or wheel-free is
ideal – open the bonnet,
disconnect the air mass meter and then
remove the air filter assembly. Next,
remove the solenoid and vacuum pipes
and stow them in a safe area, before
Detach the gear change cables and
stow them in the bulkhead area.
Remove the weight from the selector
assembly, as well as the clutch slave
cylinder from the gearbox, but do not
disconnect the hydraulic pipe! Remove
the starter motor wiring and undo the
top bolt then the upper bell housing
bolts.
Raise the vehicle lift to gain access
to the underside and remove the
undertray. Next, lower the lift to waist
height, before removing the N/S/F
wheel and arch liner. Then, unbolt
the N/S/F inner driveshaft flange
from the gearbox, removing the three
N/S/F bottom ball joint nuts, before
disconnecting the N/S hub assembly
from the bottom arm.
Pull the hub assembly outwards,
then, when the driveshaft is free, it
will hang and give enough clearance
to remove the gearbox. Disconnect the
O/S driveshaft at the gearbox flange
and push the driveshaft up above the
gearbox. Using an Allen key socket,
undo the centre bolt from the O/S drive
flange and remove the flange – this will
give clearance and aid removal.
Detach the lower gearbox pendulum
mount, disconnect the wiring loom from
the front of the gearbox and remove the
starter motor.
detaching the battery and battery carrier
assemblies. This now gives good access
to the top of the gearbox.

33 FEATURE The Clutch
Mount the new components in the bell
housing area, then put a light smear
of high-melting point grease onto the
gearbox input shaft splines. Next, place
the new clutch plate onto them, as this
will evenly distribute the grease and
also confirm the correct fitment of the
clutch plate.
De-grease the face of the new clutch
pressure plate, then, using a clutch
alignment tool, lift the new clutch onto
the flywheel. Ensure the clutch plate
is mounted correctly, indicated by
‘Gearbox side’, then, once mounted
on the dowels, insert the bolts, tighten
evenly and sequentially and torque to
the manufacturer’s specification.
Ensure the release system is fitted
correctly, the alignment dowels are
installed and all cables and pipes are
clear of the bell housing area, ready to
refit the gearbox.
Support the engine using either
an engine brace, subframe-mounted
support or a prop system under the
engine; in this instance, Alistair used
a second transmission jack to support
the engine. Detach the top gearbox
mounting and then slightly lower the
engine to help gearbox removal. Undo
the lower bell housing bolts, leaving
one easily accessible bolt to support the
gearbox.
Support the gearbox with a
transmission jack, undo the final
bell housing bolt and then ease the
gearbox away from the engine. Once
the gearbox is clear of the clutch, lower
the transmission jack and gearbox and
remove the gearbox from the vehicle.
Clutch replacement
Remove the old clutch from the flywheel
by undoing the six retaining bolts,
scrub the clutch dust from the flywheel
and back of the engine with clutch and
brake dust cleaner. Inspect the solid
flywheel for any heat cracks or damage,
before cleaning the surface glaze with
Emory cloth.
Attention now turns to the gearbox
and release system. First, remove
the release bearing and arm from the
gearbox, wash out the clutch dust from
the bell housing using clutch and brake
dust cleaner, then inspect the following
areas closely:
• The bearing guide tube for any wear
or oil leaks. If wear or leaks are
present, this must be replaced.
• The release arm pivot point, release
bearing mounting points and slave
cylinder contact point: if wear is
present, replace as required. In this
instance, wear was found at the pivot
point and release bearing mounting
area, so the release arm and pivot point
were replaced.
• Check the contact area on the slave
cylinder and the condition of the
rubber boot.
• Ensure the gearbox alignment dowels
are fitted.
Gearbox fitment
Mount the gearbox onto the
transmission jack and guide into
position. When close to the engine,
align the gearbox then ease it onto the
clutch, before finally helping it onto the
alignment dowels. Finally, install an
easily accessible bolt and tighten.
Refit in reverse order of removal –
torque specifications are available on
REPXPERT – then reset all electrical
consumers after reconnecting the
battery. Always carry out a full road test
to ensure a quality repair.

COMMON CLUTCH
INSTALLATION
ERRORS
THROUGH its iconic brand,
Borg & Beck, First Line Ltd
has extensive knowledge of the
automotive clutch system and
so is sharing its experience of
the most common installation errors,
in order to prevent technicians from
making the same mistakes.
HOW TO CHECK IF A CLUTCH
IS FAULTY
There are many factors that can
contribute and cause a clutch to fail,
for example driving style - does the
driver ride the clutch and unknowingly
burn through it, has the vehicle been
used to tow, is it regularly parked on a
steep hill, or has it recently had a clutch
fitted, which unfortunately could have
been misaligned or over greased during
installation and has therefore failed
prematurely? All of these questions are
ones that technicians should be asking
the driver, as this may help lead them
to a correct diagnosis. In addition, one
of the most important areas to check
is the release mechanism, because,
irrespective of whether it is hydraulic
or cable driven, if something has seized
or worn, this could certainly cause the
clutch to fail.
COMMON INSTALLATION ERRORS
Clutch Judder
Judder can result from over-greasing
the splined input shaft. In fact, it only
requires a small amount of grease to
operate correctly and if too much is
applied, then this can splatter onto the
First Line sheds a
light on the main problems
plate, contaminating the surface and
causing the problem.
A similar effect can also occur if
the cover is not bolted down evenly
or seated on the dowels. If it is not
correctly aligned and bolted down,
the clutch plate will not clamp evenly
during clutch engagement, leading to
judder.
Clutch Slip
Slip can be caused by contamination
such as an engine to gearbox oil leak
or if the clutch cable is adjusted too
tightly. It can also be triggered if there
are seizing components within the
hydraulic system.
Clutch Drag
Drag can be generated if the hydraulic
system hasn’t been bled properly, which
will result in the release mechanism
not achieving the right travel to totally
disengage the clutch. Cable driven
vehicles can suffer a similar effect if the
adjustment is incorrect.
Another common cause of premature
failure is due to a ‘hung’ gearbox. It’s
therefore vital for technicians to use the
correct equipment to support it and lift
it into place, as the slightest distortion
created from it hanging on the engine
during installation, will result in
damage.
In order to provide independent
workshops with the solution to all their
needs, the Borg & Beck range consists
of more than 800 references and
includes 2 in 1 clutch kits, 3 in 1 clutch
National Auto Parts
Clutch approval process
For over 30 years, National Auto Parts based in Derbyshire has been serving the
independent aftermarket throughout the UK and Europe as both a manufacturer and
distributor of high quality automotive parts.
Technical Manager Nick Richie spoke to The Garage about the R&D process that
National Auto Parts have in place for their product ranges.
“We are specialists in clutch and brake components for passenger cars and light
commercial vehicles, but today, I want to concentrate on our clutch range and
explain how our clutch approval process works.”
“There are currently 1,200+ clutch kits within our range and 150+ of those kits
have CSC (Concentric Slave Cylinder) included and we offer a range of 80+ Single
Mass Flywheel Conversion kits. Our clutch range also includes slave cylinders,
release bearing guide tubes, and release forks.”
“Our clutch approval process consists of three stages which must be completed
before final approval and delivery.”
• Step 5 – We do the above by comparing the drawing to the
specifications we sent to the supplier. This is always a nervy
time, as up until this point, a lot of time has been allotted to
get us to this stage.
• Step 6 – Once we have approved the drawings, we can then
go ahead and request samples from the factory.
Stage 1: Establish OE performance specifications
This consists of 3 steps.
• Step 1 - We measure the OE performance. This information
is obtained by performing a full evaluation of the donor
clutch which measures the OE clutch cover performance.
• Step 2 – From this information, we can then create a
specification based on OE & vehicle performance.
• Step 3 – Finally, we can then forward samples and spec to
our manufacturer.
“To elaborate, this phase is very exciting. We get to see the
first hardware samples of our efforts so far and compare
them to the original specification we provided the factory.
This part of the process is achieved by analysing clamp loads,
release load, pressure plate lift, bolt and dowel hole positions,
and finally, finger height and pressure plate dimensions. Once
we are satisfied that the samples achieve our criteria, we
proceed to the final stage of the process.”
Stage 3 – Final approval & delivery
Nick continued, “Once stage 1 is complete and the
manufacturer has received all the information, we move on to
the next stage.”
Stage 2 – Check drawings, request samples
• Step 4 – Once we have received the technical drawings from
the factory, we can then get to work analysing them.
• Step 7 – We submit the approval to our purchasing
department with a purchase order request.
• Step 8 – The purchasing department acknowledges receipt
of the purchase order and once happy, they will then place
the order with the factory.
• Step 9 – The final step in the process. Once we receive the
first delivery, we embark on a full forensic 100% inspection
of all products.
“We inspect every single piece of work to determine
specification and quality compliance. For subsequent
deliveries the inspection level is reduced to the sampling plan
method, which do vary depending on product maturity and
supplier performance.”

New car registrations
down -5.8% despite new
model boost to electric
vehicle demand
UK new car registrations declined by -5.8% in August,
according to figures published today by the Society of
Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Just over
87,000 vehicles were registered during what is traditionally
the quietest month of the year for new car sales.
While registrations to private buyers held relatively
steady, down by 699 units in the month, demand from
businesses of all sizes was much more subdued, with
2,650 fewer new cars joining UK fleets, down -5.5% on
August 2019. Demand also fell across all segments except
superminis, with the biggest declines in demand seen in
the mini (-64.2%) and specialist sports (-41.9%) categories.
Zero emission-capable vehicles enjoyed a bumper August
as a result of new models coming to market, with sales of
plug-in hybrids increasing by 221.1%, although they still
only accounted for 1 in 30 sales. Registrations of battery
electric cars increased by 77.6% in the month, accounting
for 6.4%. However, they make up just 4.9% of registrations
year to date, up from 1.1% in the same period last year –
clearly illustrating the scale of the challenge ahead to reach
the government target for EVs to comprise 70% of new car
sales by 2030.
The figures are released as the UK automotive industry
calls for binding targets on charging infrastructure
development and long-term commitments to incentivise the
purchase of zero emission capable vehicles to accelerate
demand. In the past five years, the range of zero emission
capable car models available in the UK has trebled to
more than 80, with some 200 more in the pipeline over the
coming years. For customer demand to keep pace, at least
1.7 million new on-street charging points will need to be
built by 2030, along with a long-term commitment from
government to provide incentives for EV purchases.
Overall, registrations remain down by -39.7% in the year
to date, some 600,000 units behind this time in 2019,
following coronavirus enforced lockdowns.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “The decline
is disappointing, following some brief optimism in
July. However, given August is typically one the new car
market’s quietest months, it’s important not to draw too
many conclusions from these figures alone. With the allimportant
plate change month just around the corner,
September is likely to provide a better barometer. As
the nation takes steps to return to normality, protecting
consumer confidence will be critical to driving a recovery.”
scheme for the trade. Workshops and
technicians can now get their hands
on a pack full of tasty treats every time
they purchase Yuasa batteries from
participating distributors.
The UK market leading vehicle battery
brand, manufactured by GS Yuasa,
has launched the scheme to encourage
workshops to stock up and beat the
winter rush. And, more importantly, to
provide busy technicians with a muchneeded
snack supply to help them get
through this busy period.
As the world continues to get back
on the road, servicing, repairs and
MOT demand is surging. Add to
this the approaching winter and the
requirement for batteries is higher than
it’s ever been.
At the peak of the coronavirus
pandemic, it is estimated that around
70% of the UK’s cars remained
immobile. Many of these vehicles will
have suffered battery damage due to
reduced usage so testing, replacement
and charging services have never been
more important.
Available now from participating
Yuasa distributors nationwide, each
Yuasa-branded snack pack contains
a feast of confectionary favourites
including a can of soft drink, packet of
crisps, chocolate bar and bag of sweets.
James Douglas, Marketing and
Product Manager at GS Yuasa Battery
Sales UK Ltd said: “We are excited to
launch our free snack pack promotion
to workshops. The coronavirus
lockdown has had a massive effect
on vehicles, causing many non-start,
battery related problems. Combine
this with the winter season around the
corner, we are expecting the demand for
batteries to be higher than ever.
“We are encouraging all workshops to
act now and test every battery on every
vehicle to ensure they make the most of
the opportunity this winter, but more
importantly, so they can enjoy a free
snack pack on us during these busy
periods!”
Manufactured by GS Yuasa, Yuasa
batteries are engineered to provide long
service life, maximum performance
and exceptional reliability. They are
number one choice for technicians and
professionals across the globe. Upgrade
to Yuasa for the highest OE quality,
widest vehicle coverage, complete
support, a winning team and the best
online tools.

Republic, Slovakia, Poland,
minority share in Elit Kar in
of the market leaders in this
region having experienced
strong growth rates in the
past.
Andras Lorincz has
previously held the position
of Vice President of Sales
One of Morris Lubricants’ longestserving
employees has decided to
hang up his work boots and hi-vis
jacket this week.
Kenny Crane, who is in his fortyfirst
year at Morris Lubricants, having
started work at the Shrewsbury-based
company back in 1980, is retiring from
his role with the company.
Having spent twenty-six years on
the bulk filling line, Kenny has the
achievement of filling more litres of the
world-famous Morris oil than anyone
else in the 151-year history of the
company.
Kenny is looking forward to his
well-earned retirement: “I’m looking
forward to having the time to go and
renovate my house but I’ve had a
brilliant forty plus years at Morris.
So much has changed since I started,
for HELLA GmbH & Co.
KGaA’s global Independent
Aftermarket business.
He has also held various
other roles at this leading
global automotive supplier.
Previously, Andras was once
Sales Manager and, later,
General Manager for Elit
Romania, which is now part
of LKQ.
“Andras is rejoining us with
an impressive combination
of regional and global
experience,” highlighted
Arnd Franz, CEO of LKQ
Europe. “He has delivered
great results in challenging
market environments and
will be an integral part of
our leadership team, driving
performance and further
growth for LKQ in Europe.
We look forward to having
Andras on board soon and
warmly welcome him back to
the team.”
LKQ in Central and
Eastern Europe is focused
on wholesale and retail
customers. There is a solid
base of wholesale and fleet
customers in addition to
workshops supported by
a network of workshop
concepts. There is also a very
substantial expert offering
with respect to garage
equipment and training for
workshops, which is the
most comprehensive in the
market.
With a strong B2C
segment, customers, mainly
in the Czech Republic, utilize
its online store for spare
parts and accessories.
“I am thrilled to soon be
End of an Era at Morris Lubricants as Kenny Retires
with so many different types of oil
nowadays and the maximum quantity
of oil going from 700 litres to 1500
litres in the bulk tanks.”
Kenny added that the family aspect
of working at Morris Lubricants is
joining LKQ Europe and to
be leading the Central and
Eastern European team
towards future success,” said
Lorincz. “This is a key region
for the European group and
I look forward to focusing on
the 1 LKQ Europe integration
program for enhanced
European cooperation
as well as offering our
customers a best-in-class
experience.”
something he is grateful for: “I’ve seen
Director David Goddard, with his
sons and Executive Chairmen Andrew
and Edward and my sons Mark and
Daniel both work here too, so the
positive family environment is here
for us all to see. Morris Lubricants
has been a big part of our family, and
one that I am thankful to see continue.
The team here are a great bunch of
people and I will miss them all.”
Kenny has no plans on retiring
and sitting back though, as well as
working on the house, he is a keen
motorcycling enthusiast, so he plans
on spending a fair amount of time on
his Honda CB 500F. He also has nine
grandchildren, with another on the
way in a months’ time, so he is excited
about the prospect of spending more
time with them and his wife Wendy.
Reception Retirement for Morris’ Maria
Reception at Morris Lubricants’
Shrewsbury headquarters will be
without a familiar friendly face as
Receptionist Maria Buck is retiring from
the company this week.
Maria, who joined Morris Lubricants
back in August 1999, has thoroughly
enjoyed her time with the company and
is looking forward to her well-earned
retirement, but admits that leaving the
company which has been a big part of her
life for so long, will be a sad time.
“Having been with Morris for nearly
21 years, I’ve seen the company adapt to
various different demands. Keeping up
to date with changes in personnel, new
job titles and responsibility has been
challenging!” said Maria, “Having
a dedicated IT Department that
introduced new operating systems has
improved the company and ensured
a smooth running of operations. I’m
grateful that the company has listened
to suggestions brought by myself and
others to ensure that jobs are made
easier.”
With retirement coming, Maria
doesn’t plan on putting her feet
up and living a quiet life, as she is
looking forward to dedicating her time
to making improvements to her house
and garden and learning new skills
along the way. She also has a passion
in restoring retro and vintage items,
which will take up some of her time and
catching up and reconnecting with old
friends from her music background,
something which she appreciates Morris
Lubricants for supporting during her
time with the company.
