Garden tour
fundraiser for
youth workers
A COMMUNITY garden tour
is being planned as a way to
fundraise for youth workers at
Lincoln High School.
The Selwyn Waiwera Youth
Trust has been supporting youth
workers at the school since 2008
through 24-7 YouthWork.
Trust member Diane Williams
said the event, planned for November,
will help with any funding
shortfall over the coming years.
“We would like people to have a
great day enjoying the local gardens
while supporting a great scheme.
We also would like to lift the profile
of SWYT. As well as supporting
24-7 YouthWork,” she said.
“Not everyone has someone
they can talk to, someone who gets
them where they are at, that won’t
judge them but listen and be good
role models. There are so many
issues facing our youth today.”
The event is a self-guided tour
of local gardens, All of which are
within Lincoln, Broadfields and
Greenpark.
• The garden tour will
be held on November 7.

Adventure-bound for charity
MARIJKE ETWELL is on
a mission to raise $4000 for
Bowel Cancer New Zealand.
The Rolleston resident is getting
creative with the way she
plans on fundraising.
She secured herself a spot
with Inspired Adventures, an
adventure-based fundraising
agency that partners with
non-profit companies to create
charitable challenges around
the world.
Etwell’s first adventure will be
a 100km hike through the hills
of Tuscany, Italy, in April next
year.
“I am feeling very excited
about the trip but at the same
time, I will understand if it
doesn’t go ahead because of
Covid-19. The main thing is
to raise the money for Bowel
Cancer NZ,” she said.
Due to the global impact of
Covid-19, many of the organisations
fundraising events have
been postponed or cancelled,
Etwell said.
“The impact of this will be felt
for a long time yet and will push
Bowel Cancer NZ to their absolute
limit in regards to helping
families in need.
“Currently, they are
projecting more than a 30 per
cent downturn in their revenue
so far, which equates to about

On top of the 100km hike,
Etwell is also collaborating with
artist Joanna de Vegt who has
donated two paintings to be
auctioned.
The paintings measure
30cm x 91cm and can be
hung both vertically or
horizontally, viewings are
available at CNC Solutions Ltd
in Rolleston.
The minimum bid is starting
at $300 for each painting. To

Waitaha School
production
taking shape
WAITAHA SCHOOL pupils are
gearing up for their production
which is planned to hit the stage
next month.
Giraffes Can’t Dance involves
just over 100 pupils.
Teacher Kendra Horne said
the production is an amazing
experience which gives pupils an
opportunity to thrive.
“We are a specialist school in
Rolleston and we often refer to
our students as superheroes. Opportunities
like this are a great
way to show all their different
superpowers and express themselves,”
she said.
“The students are very excited
and feeling positive. Performing
proudly comes naturally for many
of our students, they will definitely
thrive on stage.
“For those who are feeling a
little bit nervous, we have fabulous
staff supporting them and
encouraging them to do as much
as they are comfortable doing.”
If level 2 restrictions are still
in place by the performance
date, October 28, it will be livestreamed
on the school Facebook
page.

Rolleston College from 5-6.30pm.
