Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Wednesday September 23 2020 Selwyn Times NEWS 15 A CUSTOM-MADE buoy is being used to monitor the health of one of the district’s highcountry lakes. The complex device floating in Lake Pearson contains a range of sensors that are constantly transmitting different types of data about the water. The final recorders were installed earlier this month meaning the monitoring station became fully operational. A team of Environment Canterbury scientists and technicians, with help from the Harbourmaster’s Office and Fish and Game, anchored the device in the northern half of the lake. Powered by a solar panel, the buoy senses and records water quality and meteorological data, which it transmits by radio to a small tower installed at the lake edge. This tower, in turn, sends the data, together with lake level information, out to the experts using satellites. An ECan spokesman said Lake Pearson was chosen as it faces many of the same stresses as other lakes in Canterbury. A pilot study over the past two years discovered oxygen loss deep in the lake over summer, which may have been linked to fish deaths in the past. The water quality in Canterbury’s high-country lakes is tested seasonally with samples collected by helicopter and then analysed. But to get a fuller picture of what’s happening below the surface, continuous water quality recording at different depths is necessary. “The Lake Pearson monitoring station is now providing that picture. It measures dissolved oxygen, turbidity, algal biomass and conductivity at two metres depth,” said the spokesman. ECan plans to install a similar buoy in Lake Benmore next year. Reader Brian Hooper responds to last week’s article about rules around cats being kept out of a new animal control bylaw We would like there to be an animal control bylaw around the control of feral cats in built-up areas whereby homeowners have some way of ridding their housing area of feral cats rather than a local resident taken them in, feeding them and allowing them to procreate which results in feral cats entering homes, spraying doorways and furniture and defecating on carpets. We realise that microchipping and desexing feral cats is very expensive and feel that householders should have a resource other than the SPCA or the Cat Protection League to go to for assistance. Volunteers, such as district councillor Sophie McIness with her children Jack and Chloe, were co-ordinated across three sites in Springfield, planting a total of 2800 native trees. One of the planting locations was the old pit at the corner of Tramway Rd and Tawera Lane which is being turned into a recreation reserve. Another site was a private property where the owners are building a new home and have a commitment to include extensive native plantings on their property.
