Drink driving: By the numbers
• By Devon Bolger
NEARLY TWICE as many
drink drivers have been caught
in Rolleston than any other
township in the district.
A total of 137 people recorded
excess breath or blood alcohol
levels in Rolleston, data released
to the Selwyn Times shows.
Lincoln had the second-highest
number with 77 motorists
caught.
There were 67 people in
Rolleston who recorded a breath
alcohol level over 400mcg/L.
That compares to 53 in
Lincoln, 33 in Leeston, 19 in
Darfield and two in Arthur’s
Pass.
The legal limit is 250mcg/L,
if you record between that and
400mcg you will receive a $200
fine.
If you record more than
400mcg/L you could be jailed for
up to three months, fined up to
$4500 and will automatically be
disqualified from driving for at
least six months.
The legal blood alcohol limit is
50mg.
Senior Sergeant Dean Harker
said he thinks the higher
numbers in Rolleston are due
to a larger population and
could possibly be due to people
commuting from the city.
CHECKPOINT: Statistics have revealed how many people
were charged with drink driving across the district between
2017 and 2019.
“It is a real
concern for
us. We have
been pushing
for a long, long
time to try
and spread the
message about
drink driving.”
Dean Harker
Harker said
memorable call-outs for police in
the district include apprehending
drunk drivers that were stopped
in the middle of the road,
slumped over the steering wheel
and covered in vomit.
“Another time, a driver was
weaving all over the road and
followed home by a member of
the public, when spoken to by
police they didn’t know where
they were.”
Last week Selwyn Times
reported police have seen an
increase in drink driving in the
district over the last month.
People caught with
excess alcohol levels
over the last three
years:
Rolleston: 137
Lincoln: 77
Leeston: 59
Darfield: 34
Arthur’s Pass: 5
Selwyn total: 312
It follows a motorist in their
early 30s being caught three
times the legal alcohol limit a
fortnight ago.
The man was found slumped
over his steering wheel on
Springston-Rolleston Rd.
Harker said the driver, who
lives in the district, refused to
get out of the vehicle when police
arrived.
He was taken to the Rolleston
Police Station where he recorded
a reading of 1050mcg/L.
The motorist was one of six
people caught drink driving in
the district over one weekend.
About 80 per cent of the offenders
recorded readings over
1000mcg/L, Harker said.
Harker said the man would
not tell police if he had been
drinking at an establishment
before driving but he had been
drinking in his car.
