Eastern suburbs such as Linwood, Shirley, Parklands, New Brighton, Richmond, Wainoni and Aranui were included in the list of suburbs with the most yellow bin rejections, per year, since 2018. “It’s super disappointing, I think perhaps there is a lack of education around that within those areas,” she said. “I have seen bins that are still full at the end of collection and are knocked over in the street, and I can see people have thrown general waste into their recycling bins. “Unfortunately it’s a bit of laziness on people’s behalf, like with people not washing containers, but there’s still a lack of education on what can go into those bins.” The top offending items found in yellow bins in the last three years were soft plastics, plastic lids, food waste, dirty recycling and tools and appliances. Although fines were not issued, the city council had the power to remove bins after three repeated offences. Removals have mostly been in Linwood and the central city, and more removal requests were in progress in Aranui, New Brighton and Woolston. Davids believed more could be done to encourage better habits and reduce what was sent to landfill, such as having more recycling bins in public areas, reducing what people purchased to lessen manufacturing demand and more education. “Other public areas of the city have three bins for recycling, rubbish and compost, but in the east, we see very little of that. We generally just have normal NASTY: Food waste and dirty recycling shouldn’t be placed in the yellow bin. rubbish bins where everything is thrown in the same bin,” she said. “Recycling education is always in other people’s faces in other areas, but we also don’t see that here as often, so the council needs to improve communications around recycling and what can go in.” In Brief PARKING ISSUES A resident of Grove Rd, Addington addressed the Spreydon- Cashmere Community Board with concerns that any future residential development in close proximity would cause on-street parking congestion in the area, as the Government no longer required new developments to provide off-street parking. The area was already saturated with traffic from commuters and nearby businesses. The resident requested the board’s support for him to lease a car park at the nearby Hazeldean Business Park at a discounted rate. The community board has requested city council staff advice to improve car parking for residents, such as resident parking permits, leasing car parking spaces and making certain roads one-way. The policy outlines out how the city council plans to manage the planting, protection, maintenance and removal of trees in parks, reserves, roads and other public places. It also outlines under what circumstances trees will be removed, while providing guidance on how public requests for tree removal. Submissions will close on October 12.
