finds himself listening
to splendid classical
music interrupted by an
annoying noise that, of
course, has nothing to do
with the harmony of the
classical piano.
What is meant by
destructuring, and what
does the artist want to
communicate?
By destructuring, we
mean “the abandonment
of specific structures
conditioning an organism
or a mental dress to give
life to a more rational
organization or attitudes
more appropriate to
the changing times”.
Since the destruct to
which Rungray refers is
mental, the reference
to mental dress
abandonment seems to
be the most suitable to
this destabilizing sound
experience.
STRUKTURO creeps into
the mind to “break the
patterns,” to destroy any
residual conditioning, the
habit of thought, dogma,
or existential referment
resulting from a prepackaged
truth and not
consciously chosen.
To better understand
STRUKTURO, we should
begin to ask ourselves:
why do I behave in
this way and not,
for example, in this
other, perfectly suited
to another person?
The answer will be
something similar
to “because I have
certain values, ways
of thinking, mental
habits that result from
years of education and
experience.”
I want to point out
from the beginning
that when we talk
about mental habits,
we are not referring
to considerations of
value, such as “I behave
like this because I
am a good person,
while Tizio behaves
like this because
he is a bad person.”
More than ever in this
sound experience, it
is essential to detach
from considerations
of a generic and even
trivial nature like those
just mentioned. Instead,
it becomes imperative
to open the mind to a
broader vision, which
also embraces the
reasons for a particular
way of thinking and
acting. It also becomes
essential, in my opinion,
regardless of value
evaluations, because
the value is often the
most tenacious anchor
to mental habit.
STRUKTURO is, therefore,
destabilization, breaking
mental patterns. The
first thought that comes
to my mind is the need
to “break old habits of
thought” in the name
of an adaptation, and
adaptation to a rapidly
changing era. “Who stops
is lost,” in short.
Sometimes, I imagine
how my grandparents
would live today if they
would adapt to modern
thinking. The answer is
obvious: no. I remember
my grandmother, who
resisted longer in life
than my grandfather, not
adapting to the changing
times and suffering a
great deal watching the
news. She told me that
my great-grandmother
could not see the
information on television
because she cried as
soon as she heard some
crime news.
So STRUKTURO suggests
to adapt to the times
and become insensitive
opportunists, without
empathy and values to
follow? Here too, the
answer is no. Having
an open mind and
understanding that
