MICROBIOLOGY
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE

CHANGE THE FACE
OF HUMAN HEALTH
We are surrounded by trillions of micro-organisms, undetectable to the naked eye. In this
group are the organisms that cause infectious diseases in humans, from Avian Flu to Zika
Virus. It's the microbiologist's job to find out how and what can be done to minimize the
threat to human health. Through research and specialized tracks of study, you will observe microorganisms,
study their behaviors, track their spread, and learn what can be done to reduce the risks
these microbes pose to humans.
WHAT MAKES
ACPHS
UNIQUE?
General biology majors often struggle after graduation because they lack specialized
knowledge that pharmaceutical and biomedical employers covet. That is not the
case with a bachelor's degree in Microbiology from ACPHS—one of just two such
programs in New York State. Research is a huge component of the Microbiology
program, and students begin learning research techniques in their first year at ACPHS.
LIFE
AFTER
ACPHS
The Microbiology program provides the coursework and research experience
that will position you well for medical, veterinary, and dental school, in addition to
master’s and Ph.D. programs in Immunology, Cell Biology, or Molecular Biology.
Many students pursue the College’s own five year joint degree B.S./M.S. in
Microbiology and Molecular Biosciences. Employment opportunities for microbiologists
include settings ranging from pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities to
international health agencies to research laboratories.
COURSEWORK
AND
INTERNSHIPS
All Microbiology students complete the core curriculum and one of the three tracks
described below. The expected completion time for the program is four years. The
core curriculum consists of 39 credits of Basic Sciences, 33 credits of Microbiology,
14 credits of Humanities and Communication, and 21 electives. Students choose
between three tracks (Biomedical Microbiology, Public Health Microbiology/Infectious
Disease Epidemiology, or Industrial/Pharmaceutical Microbiology).
