robbed every single day
NEWS 9
The most common time when
robberies happened is between
6-8pm, with 18 hold-ups. The
next most frequent time
frame was 7-8am with
eight robberies.
Detective Senior
Sergeant Craig Johnson
said the things most commonly
taken during the
robberies are cash and
cigarettes.
His advice for shopkeepers
is to do what they
can to protect themselves
against robberies by putting in
place security measures such
as fog cannons, or metal bars
around their counters if
possible.
He said it is important shopkeepers
have a plan for what to
do when robberies occur.
“I guess, having a plan in place
for both you and your staff would
be the first thing. Having
thought through,
if something like this
does occur, what’s the
best option for me to
keep myself and my staff
safe?”
Johnson knows some
dairy workers arm
Craig themselves against robbers
but does not recom-
Johnson
mend using weapons to
defend yourself unless absolutely
necessary.
He said offenders who carry
out robberies can range from
youth offenders to experienced
criminals but no one group is
over-represented.
SAFETY: Police encourage dairy owners to install security
measures such as fog cannons or metal bars around
counters to protect themselves during robberies.
Near miss for
young boy
A DECISION made only minutes
before a tree crashed through
the roof of a campervan early on
Tuesday saved a six-year-old boy
from being crushed.
Justin Wealleans, his wife Ine
and their sons Niko, 6, and Casey
4, of Christchurch, were spending
the night in the rental vehicle
at a lakeside reserve just north
of Kingston when the tree came
down during violent winds about
2am. A little earlier, unable to
sleep because of the noise, he and
his wife had got out of bed and
were sitting in the front of the vehicle,
debating whether to move
to a more sheltered position.
“It was full-on — it felt like the
van was about to be picked up
and rolled over,” Justin Wealleans
said.
A couple of minutes after getting
Niko down from his bunk
and returning to the driver’s seat,
he stood up again.
“The tree then fell through and
smashed right on the seat, within
seconds of me moving. If we
hadn’t got our son out of the top
bunk, it would’ve hit him, too.”
