Alternative spraying methods being trialled
• From page 1
“I’m pretty stunned as I
thought CCC had stopped using
glyphosate, but apparently that’s
just for parks.”
Her concerns followed a reversal
on a proposal earlier this year
to increase its use to save the city
council more than $3 million after
Covid-19 left a $90m financial
gap.
But the plan was weeded out
after public backlash due to the
herbicide’s classification as being
“probably carcinogenic to
humans” by the International
Agency for Research on Cancer.
When Freed contacted the city
council to ask why she was not
made aware of the spraying, they
acknowledged that the chemical
was toxic but said there were
no policies in place to notify
residents.
She was told by staff that spraying
took place three times a year
and that alternative methods
were being trialled to get glyphosate
off streets, such as hand
weeding and steam.
“This really isn’t good. If you
feel strongly about this then I
encourage you all to get together
and opt out,” said Freed.
THE FERRYMEAD Lions Club
had its biggest garage sale yet,
raising more than $2500 on
Saturday.
More than 600 of the 1000
items ranging from kitchenware,
exercise bikes to old music
records were sold, said club president
Bernie Godden.
The amount raised was nearly
three times more than at the
inaugural sale two years ago at
the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club. The
garage sale, this year, was held at
said residents can request to be
added to a no-spray area outside
their property but public notification
was not possible.
Ferrymead Heritage Park.
Godden said that the change in
venue was due to a lack of storage
and also the current venue was
more convenient as it is the home
of the club.
Most of the items sold were
priced under $50. However, an
antique table lamp sold for $100,
while a large cupboard-sized iron
gate and an original record turntable,
sold for $50 each, among a
few other collections.
Said Godden: “About 100
people came in and bought
something, spending $20 on an
came at a higher cost to the city
council, they have been adopted
where possible in spite of the
challenges.
“We are trying to strike the
right balance,” he said.
“The non-chemical methodology
can take longer to apply
and requires more visits, which
increases the risk for contractors
due to their greater exposure to
live traffic.
“Producing signage or sending
letters to residents in the area
would come at an additional cost
to the ratepayer and is not something
staff have actively pursued
to date.”
Diabetes to benefit from Lions club fundraiser
VALUE: Some of the items
at the Lions club fundraiser.
average.”
He said it took more than a
dozen members and a week to
unload and display the items
which were donations from the
club members and the general
public.
The proceeds of the sale would
go to Christchurch Diabetes,
one of the causes supported by
the Lions Club International
Foundation.
“The unsold items would
most probably be used for next
year’s sale, hopefully,” Godden
said.
In Brief
ROAD CLOSURES
Work on the south side
of Ferry Rd as part of the
Woolston Village upgrade has
now started. New drainage
pipes and streetscaping will be
installed to make the village
a safer and more attractive
place to walk, bike and drive.
The entrances of Maronan St
and Catherine St will close one
at a time for up to five weeks
each while drainage work
and road reconstruction take
place. The work is expected to
be completed within the next
eight weeks.
STORMWATER WORK
Construction to replace
brick barrel stormwater
pipes at the intersection of
Brougham St and Selwyn St
has now started. The existing
pipes have reached the end
of their life and require
replacement. The work will
be carried across different
stages to reduce traffic impact.
Brougham St will remain
open at all times, but one-way
closure and road closures on
Selwyn St and Somerset Cres
will take place. The work is
expected to be completed by
March next
year.
