For more information, visit hownd. com/winter-garden-fl.. n Time for your flu shot Officials of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County encourage residents to contact their health care providers or pharmacies to get vaccinated against the flu as soon as possible. Once vaccinated, it takes about two weeks to offer protection. Getting the flu shot each year is important, but reducing illness and hospitalization from the flu is even more critical this year to protect frontline health care workers and hospital systems that continue to care for people with COVID-19 and other illnesses. Also, having the flu and COVID-19 at the same time could lead to a negative outcome. Both the flu and COVID-19 are respiratory illnesses, but until there is a steady vaccine supply against COVID-19, the way to help prevent these two viruses from circulating at the same time is to get your flu vaccine now. Additionally, there will be less spread of the flu and COVID-19 if people continue to stay home if they’re sick, cover coughs and sneezes, wash their hands frequently and thoroughly, and wear a face covering when around others or if social distancing is not possible. n Hunger campaign makes a big impact The Central Florida community raised $278,879 for Second Harvest Food Bank through Walmart and Sam’s Club’s Fight Hunger. Spark Change. campaign. The food bank has provided enough food for 300,000 meals a day, double its daily distribution prepandemic, since March 23. This donation will help it continue operating at an elevated level. Nearly $18 million was raised this year through Fight Hunger. Spark Change. Walmart kick-started the campaign with a $3 million donation to Feeding America and member food banks. The Walmart Foundation donated another $5 million to Feeding America to help support communities and individuals facing hunger during the COVID-19 outbreak. To learn more or join the fight to end hunger in Central Florida, visit www. feedhopenow.org. n BOLO for pink vehicles Local first responders once again deployed a fleet of pink-wrapped vehicles for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A large number of law enforcement and fire-rescue agencies throughout Central Florida wrapped patrol vehicles, fire engines and ambulances in pink to raise awareness of the disease. The initiative, which is now in its fourth year, is organized and sponsored by Orlando Health to honor the thousands of breast cancer patients and survivors who battle the disease every year. The agencies will sport the pink-wrapped vehicles throughout the month. This year, 14 agencies are participating, including Orlando Police Department, Orlando Fire Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orange County Fire Rescue, Ocoee Police Department, Clermont Police Department and Clermont Fire Department. Residents are encouraged to safely share photos of the vehicles on social media and use the hashtag #BreastCancerAwareness. Additionally, patients visiting any of the seven Orlando Health imaging centers are greeted by a pink ribbon hung on the door to promote the importance of mammograms and also receive a pink mask.
