1.3 Three-dimensional printers
Since 2003 there has been a large growth in the sale of 3D printers, mostly because the cost of
them has declined. The technology is being applicable in many different fields. Nowadays,
there is large number of competing technologies and companies that produce such 3D
printers. The main differences are in the way layers are built to create parts. Printers may use
different tools for cutting the proper 3D surface, but also different materials. Some of them
create bigger objects, whereas some are created for smaller and more detailed ones.
Resolution, the most important issue in printing a sculpture with small details, is given in
layer thickness, X-Y resolution in dpi. Usually layer thickness is around 0,1mm, while in X-Y
resolution is comparable to that of laser printers. The particles (3D dots) are around 0,05mm
to 0,1mm in diameter.
