School
apologises
for lack of
zone
consultation
• By Bea Gooding
A SCHOOL has apologised
for its lack of consultation over
a proposal to change its zone
following accusations from
parents the rules weren’t followed.
Somerfield School has been
required by the Ministry of
Education to reduce the size
of its zone due to risks of
overcrowding.
Current and prospective parents
met with the school’s board
of trustees last week to discuss the
rationale behind the proposal and
whether community consultation
was sufficient.
They claimed the school did not
send letters to affected households
and objected to most aspects of
the plan.
A prospective Somerfield
parent who did not want to be
named appreciated the steps the
school was taking to ensure all
voices were heard but was still
concerned about the proposal.
“They did a good job of
explaining themselves. They
apologised for not consulting
more and regret that they didn’t,”
he said.
School fears for pupils’ safety on roads
• By Bea Gooding
ANOTHER SCHOOL says it
fears for the safety of its pupils
following an increase in traffic
and dangerous driving in the
area.
Provisions for safer access
to Knights Stream School in
Halswell are being sought for
children walking, biking or
scootering to school, due to a rise
in traffic caused by the Southern
Motorway.
It comes after Hornby High and
Halswell School revealed they were
also experiencing the same issues
due to growing traffic volumes and
speeding drivers.
The city council recently
installed improvements nearby
Knights Stream School, such as
road markings and speed signs.
But principal Mike Molloy believes
more needs to be done to
mitigate the issue.
The school is on Richmond
Ave and is connected to John
Paterson Drive, which opens up
to the motorway.
Molloy said vehicles passing
nearby the school often struggle
to slow down as they come from
the 100km/h zone into a 40km/h
speed limit zone.
“Kids aren’t predictable and
they’re not as good at judging a
vehicle’s speed,” he said.
“They don’t always look, so
we’re making sure we do work
on road safety, and parents are
supporting their children in
making good decisions.
“We’re trying to be preventative
rather than reactive.”
The school, through the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board, requested
the city council address a
number of concerns regarding
the safety of children.
Molloy said the volume of traffic
has already increased and is
expected to rise.
The school wants a 30km/h
speed limit and a raised platform
outside of the campus. It also
wants cameras to catch speeding
vehicles, a pedestrian crossing,
and more signs to remind
driver’s about their behaviour.
Buses parked outside the
school also cause visibility issues
when vehicles are turning right
from Killarney Ave and the
school wants the bus stop to be
PROVISIONS:
Knights Stream
School principal
Mike Molloy
is concerned
increased traffic
in the area is
endangering
the lives of
pupils walking
or biking to
school.
PHOTO: GEOFF
SLOAN
moved across the road to the
Knights Stream Park car park.
A lack of street lighting at
night is also a concern for children
passing through the area,
and Molloy hopes lights can be
installed.
“We’re a community school, so
when we’re not here people are
still safe when they’re coming
to use the facilities after school
and during the weekend, not just
when the school’s operating,” he
said.
Molloy noticed improvements
when extra signage was installed
recently by the city council,
but was concerned a new speed
bump at the intersection of Richmond
Ave and John Paterson
Drive was not raised enough.
“It’s not sufficient, as it
stands, to mitigate the issue as
it’s only a slight bump. You could
probably hit 80km/h over it fine,”
he said.
City council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas
said additional 40km/h signage,
road markings and a kea crossing
already outside the school
were considered to be sufficient
provision. Relocating the bus
stop was not desirable, and the
new speed bump in question was
recently modified to better slow
vehicles down.
“Relocating the bus stop into
the car park would result in
more pedestrians and typically
more children needing to cross
the road. However, staff will
investigate the visibility concerns
raised,” Thomas said.
“The developer has recently
modified the platform by
shortening the ramps to slow
vehicles on approach. It had been
designed to accommodate buses
which require the ramp to be
slightly gentler than a platform
on a non-bus route.”
Established real estate
brand comes to St Martins
SOUTHERN VIEW
ADVERTORIAL
Real estate agent Jo Warren has opened a Mike
Pero franchise in St Martins. Having lived in the area
with her husband and family for 14 years, Jo saw an
opportunity to provide real estate services for the
community under a brand that’s known and trusted.
“Mike Pero is a well-established name in the
industry, and has been since Mike Pero had his
mortgage business,” Jo says. “We also have a lower
commission rate, which I believe gives us an extra
edge too.”
While she specialises in the St Martins area, Jo’s
territory extends across the suburbs of Opawa,
Woolston, Waltham, Philipstown, Bromley, Huntsbury
and Hillsborough, working alongside people to buy
and sell their properties.
With decades of experience buying, selling
and managing multiple personal and investment
properties, Jo understands the importance of attention
to detail, giving accurate information and always being
approachable, honest and reliable.
Jo’s initial career was in nursing, having gained
her Bachelor of Nursing degree at Christchurch
Polytechnic. Following that she worked as a
personal trainer and ran her own fitness business
for 10 years before moving into real estate.
“I’ve always been working with people in the
community and that’s what I enjoy,” she says.
“Our children have been at the local school over
the last 14 years, and I have been on the PTA all
that time as well.”
As part of the Mike Pero franchise network, Jo’s
office contributes to the Mike Pero Foundation.
“For every house sold by a Mike Pero franchise,
$50 goes to the foundation, plus another $25 per
franchise owner goes in every month. People
or organisations needing funds can apply to the
foundation,” Jo explains.
“And for any property I sell for a parent at the
school I donate $500 to the school, and I also support
local sports events.”
Mike Pero St Martins is located in Beckford Road,
opposite the New World supermarket. The office also
employs a full-time licensed PA and a mortgage broker.
“I’m excited to be running my new business in my
local community,” Jo says. “So, if you are thinking of
selling your property, now is a great time to do so, and
I look forward to taking it to market for you. Give me a
call on 027 634 6738.”
When I found out Jo was a real estate
agent my immediate thought was
that it was the perfect job for her. I
have worked alongside Jo for almost
a decade in the fitness industry and
can attest to her being warm, kind and
generous. She works incredibly hard, is
honest, has a high respect for people’s
privacy and confidentiality as well as a
sincere interest in and passion for helping
people. What better goal for her than to
be helping people with selling their home.
Call for a delay to changes
• From page 1
“I think they made the best of
it with what they have to work
with. I can understand but I don’t
think it’s good enough. They said
they were just following ministry
guidelines, but that’s a bit of a
cop-out.
“Being sorry doesn’t solve the
problem.”
Concerns raised over the
proposal saw some homes in
the western boundary missing
out due to streets being split in
half, particularly on Conway St,
Stanbury Ave, Roberta Drive and
Rose St.
Longer travel distances for
some students and an overlap
into other school zones were also
main objections.
Board of trustees chairwoman
Stephanie Muller said it was not
a requirement for the school to
do letter drops in the community
but acknowledged there was
room for improvement.
She said the school’s consultation
process included sending
letters to 15 local schools in
the area, 20 early childhood
providers, an advertisement in
a September issue of Southern
View, as well as emails and letters
to the school community from
August 17.
“The board acknowledges this
is an emotional and contentious
issue for families,” she said.
“While you can always do
more, we do feel confident
that we have done our best to
genuinely seek feedback and we
were very open to considering all
submissions that we received.
“As a board, we are just following
the process set out by the
ministry.”
Parents were wanting the
consultation process – which
closed on September 25 – to be
extended until the beginning of
next year, for no zone reductions
to the western boundary,
and further reductions to the
northern boundary extending to
Milton St.
Muller said parents understood
why the changes were not possible
because it would overcrowd
schools nearby, such as Addington
School.
The board has instead asked
the MoE to delay the proposed
changes, which takes effect next
year.
Said Muller: “The board will
recommend to the ministry that
the change does not take effect
until term 1 2022.
“The additional time will allow
the families affected to continue
to plan to attend Somerfield next
year, and we look forward to
welcoming them then.”
The ministry’s decision will
be revealed at the next board of
trustees meeting on October 30.
Passion for people
• From page 1
Gautam is looking forward to
the journey ahead and is taking
over the position after the death
of long-serving community
board member and former city
councillor Sally Buck.
“I’m excited, this is just the
beginning. I’m really proud of
the Central Ward,” she said.
“I really want to thank the
people of central Christchurch
for seeing beyond my skin colour.
I’m grateful for the opportunity
and I will not let them down.”
Her vision for the ward includes
making it a place where
everyone felt safe, valued and
had a sense of belonging.
“We also need to sort out
parking for residents, unhosted
home-share accommodation and
footpaths and roads.”
A major focus was on encouraging
more civic participation in
her ward as she identified a lack
of engagement and education on
what a community board can do
for residents.
The recent by-election saw a
23.46 per cent voter turnout, and
33.43 per cent at the local elections
last year.
“Engagement – it’s what is
lacking and it’s a frustration.
I want to make sure the community
understands the process
as people have no idea what the
structure is,” she said.
“Like if people want to move
a tree on their street, you need
to go through the community
board. Most of the time the
process isn’t clear to the public.”
She also wanted to prioritise
taking steps to ensure Linwood
Village gets a revamp and becomes
a safer place to be in.
Gautam moved from Shaktinagar
(UP) – a small Indian town
700km north-west of Kolkata
– to Christchurch nearly two
decades ago after an arranged
marriage to join her husband,
Sunil Ranjan, in the city.
In that time she has worked
as a business mentor, a justice of
the peace, a marriage celebrant,
and a business and management
lecturer at Canterbury University.
She will also be finishing her
PhD later this year in immigrant
entrepreneurship at UC.
Gautam’s experience in the
migrant and wider community
and a passion for people was
what drew her to the Central
Ward role.
“The council is doing great, but
I wanted to be at the table where
decisions are made,” she said.
“I’m not a complainer, I’m a
person who looks for solutions
and I was getting frustrated that
things weren’t getting done.”
SOUTHERN VIEW
Open day to
learn how to
recycle correctly
THE CITY’S recycling facility is
opening its doors on October 31
for a behind-the-scenes look at
how it operates.
Visitors to the Parkhouse Rd
facility in Sockburn, which is
normally off-limits to the public,
will get up close to a recycling
truck and learn about how the
contents of their yellow bins are
managed.
“EcoSort processes 25-tonnes
of yellow bin contents an hour,”
city council resource recovery
manager Ross Trotter said.
“But a lot of our trucks are
being contaminated and have to
go to landfill because we can only
recycle if we have the correct
items in the yellow bin.
“So now is the perfect opportunity
for people to learn
more about why putting the
right things in your wheelie
bin matters so much, as well as
understanding how the recycling
process works from start to finish.”
Trotter said by taking the time
to put only the right items in
your yellow bin, “you’re helping
us collect high-quality material”
that can be recycled in both local
and international markets.
EcoSort will be open from 9am
to 1pm.
Elijah loses locks for alopecia fundraiser
• By Bea Gooding
ELIJAH ATKINS-Van der
Knaap is on a mission to raise
awareness of a skin disease
resulting in permanent hair loss,
losing his curly blonde locks in
the process.
Nearly 150 students, staff and
family members gathered at
Ngutuawa School to watch the
nine-year-old have his hair cut
down to 2.5cm, after growing it
for about two-and-a-half years
in support of people with alopecia
in New Zealand.
Fundraising for Alopecia NZ,
Elijah donated more than $300
to the charity. His hair was sent
to Freedom Wigs in Dunedin
to make into a wig for alopecia
patients.
Said his mother, Wendy
Atkins: “It’s so humbling and
brings a tear to my eye. He is so
kind and felt strongly that some
children also have alopecia and
the awareness and funds are going
to a fantastic cause.”
Atkins said Elijah wanted to
raise awareness about alopecia
as not many people knew about
the disease, which causes permanent
hair loss.
Hair loss fundraisers were
usually directed towards cancer
patients, she said.
“When it’s gone, it’s gone
forever – this was one of the
AMBITION: Ngutuawa School student Elijah Atkins-Van der Knaap, 9, shaved his long,
blonde locks to raise money and awareness for alopecia patients.
phrases that spoke to us the
loudest,” she said.
“So after looking online, there
wasn’t much about alopecia
and there wasn’t really have a
collection day, like Daffodil Day,
and it’s kind of hidden during
Blue September, that now has a
strong focus on men’s health and
prostate cancer.”
For his efforts, he was
awarded a “beautiful certificate”
and a book.
“He’s super stoked and so
humble. I’m sure that’s not the
end though, this story may continue
for Elijah,” said Atkins.
Going through another hot
summer with long hair will not be
a problem for Elijah now that his
locks were not getting in the way.
Said Atkins: “Elijah loves his
short hair; easy washing and
fast drying and best of all . . . he
doesn’t need to have it brushed.
And he has been such a champ,
he is a little shy and sheepish but
very informative in the same
token. He loved the crazy hair
day at school and that everyone
watched him have his big cut.”
•Donations can be made
to Alopecia New Zealand
through bank transfer with
Every Day is Open Day
Once again, the New Zealand educational curriculum is
in the firing line – and it is perhaps hard to argue that it
shouldn’t be.* On the all-important international stage, the
latest data from PISA, the Programme for International
Student Assessment, indicates our Kiwi kids are on the
slide. The downward trend in results over the last decade
shows a lost equivalent of three to six terms of schooling in
the key subjects of Reading, Maths and Science.
This is despite a 32% increase in per-child spending since
2001 and, in Christchurch at least, the construction of
purpose-built modern learning environments deliberately
designed to foster the national curriculum’s child-centred
orthodoxy.
Of course, every child should be at the heart of their own
learning. How could they now be! But let’s not throw the
baby out with the bathwater. A child’s education should be
a balance of subject knowledge; essential skills; teaching
programmes developed to suit their demonstrated
knowledge, understanding and progress; and assessment
that offers you, your child and their teachers, honesty and
evidence of this progress.
All parents, teachers and coaches know that children learn
best when they are interested in what they are learning.
Making subject knowledge and skills
interesting is the ongoing and exciting
challenge for all of us who educate and
motivate our children.
Located in the heart of our city, St
Michael’s has been educating and
nurturing the children of Christchurch
for 169 years. For our young pupils
have limitless potential to lead exciting
and generous lives, and we have the
responsibility to educate and inspire
them, to encourage every child to flourish
in mind, body and spirit.
St Michael’s is a prep school for girls and
boys in Years 1-8. ‘Prep’ as in preparation
for secondary school, a foundation for a
fine life. For at the heart of St Michael’s
are the essential values of Christian faith
and good citizenship: respect, integrity, community, faith,
hope and love.
An independent school education at the primary level is
a great gift. Our classes are small, with year-groups of 20
pupils, ensuring your child is an individual, well known by
staff and fellow pupils alike.
Traditional foundations in English and Maths are
assured. This academic rigour then underpins our wider
curriculums in History, Geography, Science and Spanish.
IT literacy is taught, not assumed, and computer use is
measured. We like teaching and talking to our pupils!
A prep education offers balance. St Michael’s cultural
and sports’ programmes further develop your child’s
foundation, as creativity and problem-solving come in
many forms. Specialist art and music classes are enjoyed
weekly. We have three choirs, and most pupils participate
in instrumental or speech & drama lessons with our ten
itinerant staff.
Nestled on the banks of the Avon, opposite the Riverside
Farmers’ Market, our extended campus is spectacular: the
Art Gallery, Museum, Tūranga – the
central library, and Hagley Park are
just minutes away.
Many of our parents now work in
the thriving city centre or Lincoln
and Riccarton Road hubs, but they
live city-wide. They comment on the
comfort of knowing their children are
in school nearby and the benefits of
popping over for an hour to catch a
performance or watch a race. With the
central exchange only a block away,
senior children arrive by bus from all
corners of the city.
You and your child are warmly
welcome to discover our purposeful,
wholehearted and inclusive prep
school. Our next Open Day is
coming up, on Tuesday 3 November. Pop in during
the day between 8.30am – 4.00pm for a tour, and to
book an appointment on the day with the principal,
please contact registrar, Bec Hitchcock: registrar@
Encourage birds back into the city
Heathcote River
health
I HAVE been thinking of trees
this week.
There have been very few
times when as a member of
the Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board I haven’t thought
about trees one way or another.
Trees are probably the third
most raised topic in the community
after water and traffic and
roads. Everyone loves a tree but
at times many of us are inclined
to have a word or two about
their leaves, their roots, their
placement and whether they are
native/endemic to Aotearoa New
Zealand or exotic.
With the winds we have been
having recently trees have been
badly damaged in several of our
parks and reserves and I have
sent in one or two SnapSend-
Solves to the city council requesting
a clean-up of enormous
branches and split trunks lying
on the ground where children
may have been playing the day
before. You will have seen some
damaged trees too.
I often look at trees in our
parks and reserves and think of
their possible history. Were the
lombardy poplars planted by or
for returning soldiers from the
World War 1 battles in Italy to
remind them of their time there.
From the board
Karolin Potter, chair
Were the oaks and elms and
beeches similarly reflecting time
spent in the United Kingdom
around the same time.
Many of these trees would live
Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board
BIRD CALL: There are groups of people in Christchurch
planting endemic trees to encourage bellbirds, tui,
kereru and the rest to come to town.
hundreds of years in their
home on the other side of
the world but will live only
decades in New Zealand because
our winters are not cold enough
to give the trees their proper
rest.
When I first came on the
board we used to talk a lot about
planting a native tree pathway
from Banks Peninsula into town
to encourage our birds and
other fauna to return to the city.
Other New Zealand cities have
great populations of our native
birds in their neighbourhoods
with Wellington leading the
way in restoring populations of
native birds that we in Christchurch
never see.
I am so envious when I hear
an interview in Wellington
on radio drowned out by the
squawk of a kaka. I am thrilled
to know that we have groups of
local people planting endemic
trees to encourage bellbirds,
tui, kereru and the rest to come
to town and that that effort is
supported by the Summit Road
Society and all the other groups
who are working so hard to
make the Port Hills predatorfree.
You can’t do much better than
planting a tree for your children
and their children unless its
also putting a well serviced
and humane trap in your back
garden if you live on the river or
the hills.
A RECENT newspaper article
highlighted the poor water quality
of Christchurch’s urban rivers.
The Ōpāwaho Heathcote River
scored the worst for sediment,
zinc and copper, according to a
city council report.
The report showed a lack of progress
made in dealing with these
contaminants.
Jenny Webster-Brown noted,
“city residents should take more
responsibility” for the health of
the river.
The Ōpāwaho Heathcote
River Network is an organisation
working with community groups
to advocate for the continued
improvement of the river.
The recent World Rivers
Day and World Fish Migration
Day celebration had a huge
community response. It brought
together community groups,
councils and businesses involved
in river care.
People saw how they can make
a difference. A co-ordinated
approach between tangata
whenua, local government and
the community is essential.
Community engagement and
involvement is a powerful tool to
institute change. – Annabelle
8.00am to 5.00pm approved the consent application
from Ohu Development - the
The project is being funded by
will need to raise between
April 2.
The public will decide whether
City counci lors James Gough,
Sam MacDonald, Catherine
rates increase over 10 years.
