FAQS
Q: CAN I CAPTURE AN IMAGE OF A CURVED SURFACE WITH THE FSIS?
Yes. Our patented curved surface software allows the user to view the live image and adjust the exposure, gain and gamma
in real time, using the virtual control panel. After these selections are made, the user can then "paint" the (evidence)
surface area with light using the integration feature. Integration can be done via automatic integration or with the single
frame button. This is NOT a "stitching" method piecing together separate files; the camera captures one image, creating
one file based on the settings you selected on the virtual control panel.
Q. DOES THE FSIS PICTURE LOOK GREEN OR GRAINY WHEN VIEWING?
No, this is a completely different technology than RUVIS. Unlike the older RUVIS that had a fuzzy "night-vision like" green
image, the FSIS image is crystal clear thanks to the 16MP resolution camera coupled with the 27" iMac display. The result
is the highest image resolution available in the forensic market today.

Q. WHAT SIZE SURFACE CAN I VIEW AND CAPTURE?
That all depends on the camera’s distance from the working surface. To meet the minimum AFIS latent print database
resolution requirement, the image needs to be 1,000 pixels per inch. Our camera can capture up to 3,500 ppi, and can
easily meet the AFIS requirement of 1,000 ppi when capturing an image of 4.9’’ x 3.3’’. The higher the camera is from the
working surface, the lower the resolution. When screening for GSR, blood spatter, questioned documents, foot and tire
impressions, etc., the resolution is still very high. The image size is around 10’’ x 7’’ when the camera is 18’’ from the working
surface.
Q. IS THE ANGLE OF THE LIGHT IMPORTANT WHEN CAPTURING UNTREATED FINGERPRINTS WITH UV LIGHT?
Yes! Therefore, when using shortwave UV light, it’s important that the examiner can move the light sources freely at his/
her discretion. There are some illumination angles of incidence that will not allow the user to see the evidence. The UV
light will absorb into the evidence less when the light is at certain angles, making the background appear. When the
angle is right, the UV light will absorb into the evidence, eliminating the background and allowing the ridges to be seen.
Q. WHAT IS THE RESOLUTION OF THE IMAGE CAPTURED WITH THE FSIS?
The camera itself is a 16MP camera, but resolution can be marketed in deceiving ways. The imaging sensor inside any
camera will directly affect the resolution of the image. Our proprietary, custom designed imaging sensor enables the
examiner to view and capture images at high resolution. Our camera is a true 16MP camera, capturing up to 3,500 pixels
per inch. The display/viewing resolution is 4900 x 3300 pixels. The size of the file is 16MB or 31MB, depending on which bit
depth the user selects (8 bit or 16 bit). 16 bit images have many more shades of gray, greatly increasing the comparison
capabilities.
Q. WHAT FILE TYPE DOES THE SYSTEM PRODUCE?
Images are saved as uncompressed .tif files, but there are additional data save choices. The user may select Monochrome
8 bit, Monochrome16 bit, Raw 8 bit, Raw 16 bit, or "Raw AND Monochrome" in either 8 or 16 bits. Monochrome in 8 or 16
bits is saved exactly as seen on the screen. Raw in 8 or 16 bit is saved exactly as captured by the camera, without any
Gamma enhancement. When "Raw AND Monochrome" is selected, 2 separate files are saved to the dedicated file path the
examiner chooses. The Raw image is saved in .tif format, not a proprietary RAW format. All files are compatible with AFIS
submission plug-ins and data management software.
Q. HOW CAN I ADJUST MY SHUTTER SPEED, FOCUS AND APERTURE SETTINGS?
The shutter speed is adjusted using the virtual control panel, with an exposure choice of 0 seconds to 60 seconds. The
focus and f-stop (f3.8 – f16) are both adjusted manually on the 78mm lens. When you adjust the f-stop, this also affects
depth of focus.
Q. CAN I SUBMIT 16 BIT IMAGES INTO FORAY DIGITAL WORKSPACE?
Yes. Images have successfully been acquired into the Digital Workplace, displayed in the Asset Info view, Thumbnail view
and Full view. Images are able to be processed in Photoshop and then returned to Digital Workplace successfully with a
complete audit trail and the image processing history. Images are 100% compatible with the Foray system and all of the
metadata remains intact.
