Thankyou to the people of the Kaikouraelectorate for your support. We are fortunate to liveinsuch a wonderful place, which will come through the lockdown recovery period better than most. We havefantastic farmers and supporting industries thatwill be major contributorstoour economic recovery. We now wait for the Government to be sworninand to reveal its 100dayplan, whichwill set the scene and tone for our recovery. One thing we learnt from the 2017 election is that promises are easy to make, but hard to deliver on. We cannot afford to makethat mistake again. Delivery is crucial and the Government must deliver this time. Childpovertywas akey issue in 2017 and, unfortunately, six out of nine child poverty indicatorshaveworsened in the last three years. Ahuge concernofmineisthe significantamount of school time that students have missedover the last six months. This will need to be made up as education is crucial in promotingbetter outcomes for children experiencing material hardship. The Government must have aplan to ensurethis happens. Debate win An AshgroveSchool team of Year 8pupils, Perri Stevenson, Alex Ellerm and Matilda Fauth, won the North Canterbury interschool debating competition. The team beat Ohoka School in the final. ‘‘The debatewas fantastic to listen to as bothteams heldtheir ground well,’’ teacherand team coachMeganCherry said. ‘‘However, Ashgrovewere better with the rebuttals and the interjections.’’ The debate was anew experience for all three team members, Perrisays. ‘‘Wehad never debated against another school before. MrsCherry has been supporting andpushing us as well as our parents,’’ she says. ‘‘Honestly we just jumped into debating so we could try somethingnew andnext thing youknow we had won the North Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Oct 29 Oct 30 Oct 31 Nov 1 Nov 2 Nov 3 Nov 4 Rise 6:16am Set 8:09pm Best 11:30am Times 11:51pm Fair Rise 6:14am Set 8:11pm Best 12:11pm Times Housing is alsoahuge issue that needs to be addressed. We need to build alot more of them. However, wefound out that being a housing developer is not easy.Kiwibuild was an abjectfailure, even with the resourcesofthe Government behind it. Only afew houses were built and they don’t even meetthe standard that HousingNew Zealand requires to go into their pool. Reforming the ResourceManagement Act is long overdue and this would enable morehousestobebuilt far more quickly, as well as requiring councilstopermit morehousing. Climatechange wasalso akey issue in 2017, as it is today, but our emissions increasedover the last threeyears and are forecast to continue rising throughto 2025. Now that the campaign is over Ihave timetoread Bjorn Lomborg’s latest book, False Alarm, whichIrecommend to anyone interested in this crucial issue. The book is focused on tackling the issue in asensible and measuredway. It certainly does not encourage the spendingofbillions on apumped hydro scheme which may not make amaterial difference to the outcome. There are always challenges for incominggovernments and there are many waystoaddress them. It willbeinteresting to see which options the prime minister chooses. Debating success ...
