HANDEL’S ROYAL
FIREWORKS MUSIC
6.30pm, Wednesday 19 May
Auckland Town Hall
Conductor Vincent Hardaker
Presenter Marija Naumovska
Handel Music for the Royal
Fireworks
The first performance of this
piece brought the house down.
Quite literally, as some errant
fireworks set fire to nearby
buildings. Discover the story
behind this infamous concert with
Marija Naumovska and learn more
about the music Handel wrote for
it. Vincent Hardaker leads the
APO in a performance that will be
explosive, but in a strictly musical
sense only.
HAYDN’S MILITARY
SYMPHONY
6.30pm, Tuesday 29 June
Auckland Town Hall
Conductor/Presenter
Graham Abbott
Haydn Symphony No.100 ‘Military’
They called Haydn ‘the Father of
the Symphony’, and he’d earned
the moniker. In these pieces, his
inexhaustible creativity is at full
stretch. But why the nickname
‘Military’? Because this is the first
symphony to include percussion,
and Graham Abbott examines the
relationship between this rather
radical innovation and the wars
then being fought in the wake of
the French Revolution.
UNWRAP
TCHAIKOVSKY’S
1812 OVERTURE
6.30pm, Tuesday 28 September
Auckland Town Hall
Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto
Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture
It’s more than just the cannons!
In his biggest hit, Tchaikovsky
employs the French and Russian
anthems in a musical description
of the Napoleonic Wars, but he
ingeniously ensures that his
battlefield storytelling still obeys
the strict rules of musical form.
And who doesn’t like a great
orchestral composition where
you get to blow things up in the
middle of it?
