The Oxford and Districts Lionshas organised a‘‘BigFamily Fun DayOut’’ at the Oxford Showgrounds for ShowDay. President Phil Bay saysthe Lionsare keentoget some events happening after the Oxford A&P Show was cancelled in March. ‘‘We started reasonably earlywith our planning, but with Covid19 we didn’t just know if it wasgoing to happen,’’ he says. ‘‘But with everything that’s going on, we want todosomething positive for the kids,sothey can just come along and havesome fun.’’ The day’s proceedings will startat 10amwithperformances from the Oxford Area School kapahaka group, a demonstration from asheep dog triallist, ahighland pipe band, and highland dancing. Some residents fall short over recycling efforts By DAVID HILL Oxford has been enjoying mixed results when it comes to recycling. Waimakariri district councillor Wendy Doody says asuccessful AgRecovery day was held at the Oxford Transfer Station last week, but there have been some disappointing results from bin audits among urban residents. ‘‘When it comes to rubbish, some Oxford residents really do need to tidy up their act. ‘‘Your recycling bin is not arubbish bin; it’s for recycling,’’ she says. ‘‘They do have to work on it and they have to work on it fast, because they could have their bins taken off them.’’ The problem is not unique to Oxford residents, as several residents across the Waimakariri district have fallen into bad habits when it comes to what goes in the recycling bin since the lockdown. ‘‘What it all comes down to is the consumer needs to be alot more careful about what they buy,’’ Cr Doody says. ‘‘We have been athrowaway society for such along time and it’s time to change.’’ She was pleased with the response to last week’s AgRecovery day, where 19 customers from local farms visited the Oxford Transfer Station. In all, 700kg of plastic containers were crushed, which was enough to fill a 20foot container. Oxford the place to be in summer By DAVID HILL Oxford is avibrant and busy towninanuncertaintime, Wendy Doody says. The Waimakariri district councillor saysOxford is the place to visit for summerday trips. ‘‘Our businesses are doing verywell and the town seems to be quite busy,which is really nicetosee, especially in the weekends when it’s teeming withpeople.’’ She says Cantabrianswill flock to the area for day trips thissummer to enjoythe town’s boutique shopping, cafes, cyclewaysand walking trails. The OxfordOhoka Community Board has signed off,with the backing of the council, the installationofbike stands alongMain Street, and a seatistobeplacedoutsidethe pharmacy. Christmas fun planned Christmas is coming to Oxford. Planning is under way for the town’s annual festive season events to ensure there is plenty of fun for all ages. Santa Claus will pop in for the annual Oxford and Districts Lions Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 20. Once again the parade will leave from Burnett Street at 12.30pm, with Santa taking up his usual position at the back. The parade finishes at the Oxford Showgrounds, where there will be a bouncy castle and ice creams for the children, and the Lions food caravan will be operating. Once again, there will be prizes for the best floats, bestdecorated bike and boys’ and girls’ fancy dress. The Oxford Santa Parade is organised by the Oxford Lions, on behalf of the Oxford Promotions Action Committee and is made possible thanks to funding from the Waimakariri District Council. The popular Christmas Eve Carols in the Park will be back on the night before Christmas, with Santa expected to make afleeting appearance. The event is being held in the Pearson Park village green from 7pm to 9pm, finishing just in time to get the children home to bed before Santa makes his deliveries.
