I’ll try my best this issue to not mention 

the ‘C’ word, although just as the 

country starts to get a glimmer of 

hope with vaccinations on the distant 

horizon, the ‘B’ word starts appearing 

again. With the pandemic naturally taking 

up most of the headlines this year, Brexit 

has been a subject that many have 

understandably pushed to one side with 

more urgent things to worry about. From 

the 1 January it all becomes very real, 

in his feature this issue, Derek has had 

a look at some key points operators will 

need to look at. 

My ‘5-Minutes-With’ feature is back this 

issue, and I’m thrilled that industry legend 

Nikki King agreed to take part. Nikki has 

just been awarded a CBE for her services 

to education and managed to find time 

in her busy schedule to answer my daft 

questions. 

This issue has gone to press just as 

we’ve entered Lockdown 2 – the sequel is 

never as good as the original is it?

IVR approved training providers 

are now open for business 

As we are all now working through a 

COVID-19 led lifestyle, it becomes all the 

more important to make sure that every 

element of working life complies with the 

fast-moving Government advice. 

However, it is also important to know and 

understand Government guidelines and 

to make contact with the necessary 

agencies when clarity is needed or when one lot 

of advice contradicts another. 

As England entered the second lockdown 

there were announcements from some avenues 

that face to face Driver CPC training was 

suspended until the 2nd December. The IVR, 

through its direct and regular contact with DVSA 

and JAUPT, knew this not to be the case. IVR 

approved training providers were kept informed 

and services were able to continue whilst 

complying with the latest government guidelines. 

DVSA clarification 

Fortunately, the DVSA has since clarified. 

‘Where possible Driver CPC training should be 

done remotely. But where this is not possible, 

classroom-based teaching in a suitable COVIDsecure 

location environment is allowed. You 

should not carry out in-vehicle training’. 

The country is hoping this second lockdown 

finishes at the expected end date of the 2nd of 

December, but there is no guarantee it will not 

continue beyond that, up to Christmas or into 

the New Year. 

In the first lockdown, remote update 

workshops allowed instructors to exchange ideas 

about different ways to train safely in the current 

climate. The independent, approved training 

providers are taking COVID-19 as seriously as 

the IVR and by following guidelines IVR approved 

training providers are open for business but 

will also let you know if they cannot deliver a 

course due to the conditions not complying with 

Government guidelines. 

The IVR has always maintained that the 

practical nature of the courses it develops 

are crucial for putting technician’s safety first 

when working at the roadside. The IVR and its 

network of trainers continue to develop and 

deliver practical courses for practical people, 

who need the opportunity to practise the skills 

learnt. Yes, there are IVR approved 

training providers who deliver some 

modules on-line but the National 

Roadside/Recovery Scheme demands 

that certain parts of the modules are 

practical and that standard has not 

been lowered. Being not for profit, 

the IVR puts the technician’s health 

and safety above any commercial 

advantage.

but it is the network of approved

Osram’s new UV light 

cleans the air in cabins 

Using its expertise in photonics 

and ultraviolet light to continue 

expanding its product range, 

OSRAM has launched the Air Zing Mini air 

purifier, which removes germs from the air 

inside vehicles and improves air quality for 

drivers and passengers by eliminating up 

to 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria. 

In a closed, small area, like the interior 

of a vehicle, harmful germs can easily 

spread. The driver and passenger 

unknowingly bring them along on the 

journey, and then, the ventilation system 

distributes the pathogens throughout 

the car - a risk especially now with 

coronavirus. 

The ultraviolet light of Osram’s Air Zing 

Mini works at a wavelength of 360 to 

370 nanometers and can remove viruses 

and bacteria from the vehicle’s air with a 

reliability of up to 99.9 percent. 

The device has already been 

successfully tested against bird flu viruses. 

The air purifier also eliminates airborne 

allergens, pollutants or smells. 

With a diameter of 7.5 cm, the compact, 

round device is no larger than an apple 

and easily attaches to the vehicle’s 

ventilation slats with a clip. 

The included USB cable supplies power 

to the air purifier via any standard USB 

socket. 

The device operates quietly and

Brexit:

There is plenty of issues bubbling around 

within the everyday recovery sector, of 

course we now have the second lockdown 

and perhaps in the next issue we can cover 

a few fresh points that ‘Lockdown 2’ 

has created, but behind the scenes we 

have Brexit looming and the end of our 

transition period less than two months 

away. 

Under normal circumstances the 

country would be looking at a raft 

of Brexit related issues, the news 

headlines would have been full of Brexit 

- Brexit - Brexit, but needless to say 

COVID-19, Coronavirus has grabbed the 

headlines. There is one date that has 

still managed to hit the headlines 1st 

January 2021, this will be the biggest 

day in the Brexit calendar transition 

period over, and the UK will be, 

well and truly out of Europe. This 

doesn’t mean all of our current EU 

regulations cease overnight, far from 

it they continue with additional 

pieces of UK legislation that will 

be added or changed, yet more 

information that you the operator 

needs to keep at the forefront of 

your business.

We all know coronavirus has 

forced many small changes 

to the generalised business 

model the industry as a 

whole uses and subsequently 

the business model that 

you now operate to, that 

change in operating

something I’ve bleated on

but surely becoming a thing of the past, forced by coronavirus 

or through the tighter economics of the recovery industry? I 

think a combination of both, but what this does mean is that 

the distance recoveries are becoming a thing of the past and 

recoveries to the South of England and in particular those to 

Kent, will be vastly reduced. 

Driver EU permit system 

Why do I highlight Kent? I guess this is more of a local issue, 

certainly operators working in the South East, including London 

operators that borders Kent plus operators in Surrey, Sussex and 

Essex, I’m talking about Government plans to introduce a truck 

and driver EU permit system ‘Kent Access Permit’ (KAP). This 

follows a government consultation carried out back in August 

of this year. The consultation covered a series of operational 

questions, questions that directly affect Kent and operation 

Brock to reduce the massive congestion issues on the M20 with 

Operation Stack and now Operation Brock and the additional 

congestion expected at the Eurotunnel border control this 

January. Not a subject that affects all operators but something 

that will affect all port authorities and borders, because a similar 

boarder control permit could be introduced elsewhere. 

Those South East operators will be especially affected as the 

‘Kent Access Permit’ is another piece of legislation imposed on 

hauliers. When I say hauliers, I also include recovery operators. 

Because KAP will be required when using designated roads in 

Kent leading to the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel, if you are 

intending to travel into Europe, then and only then you must be 

in possession of a ‘Kent access permit’ (KAP). 

Border control issues 

Not all operators work in mainland Europe so a lot of the 

border control issues the general haulage and European logistics 

firms find themselves having to tackle, will not affect your 

business, however there are a few who do European repatriation 

work, so they will be in the thick of the changes. 

If you are intending to travel to or from Europe in your LGV 

over 7.5 tonnes then you will first have to access the Smart 

Freight Service, referred to as SF, this is an online service for 

the ‘Ro-Ro’ freight industry, a website being developed by the 

government. The service is intended to simplify and automate 

the process of establishing the border-readiness of an LGV to 

help mitigate the risk of delays. 

The online system will ask questions relating to the expected 

EU import controls at the border to ensure all drivers have the 

necessary documents before they travel. The service will include 

an online portal for registration of goods movements and an 

operator application to check compliance with the service. 

The operator would use the SF portal to make a series of selfdeclarations 

in advance of any travel plans. The SF portal would 

then indicate, based on the self-declared information, if your 

driver was/is border-ready or not. The SF portal would give 

advice to the driver on a ‘traffic light system’: 

Failure to follow an instruction from 

a traffic or enforcement officer could 

mean driver penalties. Fines for not 

having a valid KAP would be levied 

using fixed penalty notices for UK LGV 

drivers, and financial penalty deposit 

notices for foreign drivers. Fines would 

normally be on the spot, though UK 

drivers would have up to 28 days to pay. 

If a driver refused to pay, their vehicle 

and goods could be impounded. 

Green: all relevant documentation has been declared present, 

and goods may be taken to the port. 

Amber: documentation has been declared present, but goods 

can only be taken to the port after your driver has gone to the 

HMRC Departure Office, or a Third-Party Authorised Consignor 

to complete customs processes and obtain a Master Reference 

Number (MRN) barcode. 

Red: some or all documentation is missing, and goods should 

not be taken to port. 

Red result 

A driver who gets a ‘red’ result would be advised not to take 

goods to the port as they may not be able to complete their 

journey and could cause a delay to other traffic, the SF portal 

should indicate to the LGV driver why they got a ‘red’ result. 

While the SF portal’s traffic light system would be in operation 

across the country, including all port crossings, it is proposed to 

make it fully enforceable in Kent. This is because of the particular 

disruption to the surrounding road network and the risks at the 

Port of Dover and Eurotunnel. 

Meaning this legislation would require any haulier using 

designated roads in Kent leading to the Port of Dover and 

Eurotunnel to be in possession of a ‘Kent access permit’ (KAP), 

this permit will be digitally issued to those drivers receiving a 

‘green’ or ‘amber’ result from the SF service, all valid KAP’s would 

only be valid for 24 hours to cover a single trip. 

Inevitably this brings into play that unwelcomed phrase 

‘enforcement’ with the responsibility lying with the driver, 

meaning any enforcement action would also be against the

driver, rather than the haulier or freight forwarder who has 

formal responsibility for completing the customs paperwork, 

so strong and robust company procedures will be required to 

avoid any unnecessary enforcement action against your drivers. 

The Police and DVSA enforcement officers will be issuing 

penalties to hauliers found heading for Dover or Eurotunnel 

without one. Thus, travelling in contravention of a ‘red’ result 

(being advised not to travel) or failure to use the SF portal 

without a valid KAP, would be fineable offences, however 

any LGVs travelling to destinations in Kent, and not travelling 

internationally, would not be required to use SF or have a valid 

KAP. 

Driver penalties 

Failure to follow an instruction from a traffic or enforcement 

officer could mean driver penalties. Fines for not having a 

valid KAP would be levied using fixed penalty notices for UK 

LGV drivers, and financial penalty deposit notices for foreign 

drivers. Fines would normally be on the spot, though UK drivers 

would have up to 28 days to pay. If a driver refused to pay, 

their vehicle and goods could be impounded. 

Under the relevant legislation, police and DVSA enforcement 

officers are only able to fine those that are not following the 

road traffic regulations. This would remain the case even if 

somebody else had completed the SF declaration on the 

driver’s behalf. Drivers and vehicles not in possession of a KAP 

will be identified on the basis of vehicle registration numbers, 

either by enforcement officials or automatic number plate 

recognition cameras (ANPR). 

Become border-ready 

The ANPR camera would capture the VRN of a passing LGV 

and check it against a ‘vehicle of interest list’ held by the 

SF service. If the SF service determined that a KAP was not 

present, it would send a message to enforcement officers 

downstream of the camera who could choose to intercept the 

vehicle and driver, impose penalties and redirect the haulier as 

discussed above. 

An LGV without a valid KAP could also be instructed either to 

leave Kent or be directed to an off-road holding site where it 

may be possible for them to become border-ready with a valid 

KAP registration. 

Finally, the adverts you see on TV or hear on your local 

radio station says Brexit transition time is running out, only a 

few of these changes are likely to affect your business with 

few of them affecting your recovery business but have you 

considered all the changes? Are you aware of all the changes? 

Do you employ an EU citizen and if so, have they got a valid 

‘permit residence document’ from the UK Government? Have 

you checked, if they have a valid ‘indefinite leave to remain’ or 

‘indefinite leave to enter’ status from UK government?

Nikki King OBE 

awarded new 

honour for her 

services to 

education 

Logistics industry legend Nikki King OBE, former CEO of 

Isuzu Truck (UK) and now Chair of the Skills for Life Trust and 

Honorary Chair of ITUK has been awarded a CBE for Services 

To Education in the Queen’s birthday honours list. 

Nikki, whose OBE was awarded for 

Services To the Motor Industry 

enjoyed a successful career in the 

motor industry. In 1996 she set up Isuzu 

Truck (UK), the UK arm of Isuzu Motors 

Japan, one of the world’s largest truck 

manufacturers. Under her leadership, ITUK 

achieved a £35million turnover and Nikki 

pioneered flexible working, especially for 

female staff who represented 50% of her 

management team. 

In 2013, on completing a sale of the 

company to IMJ, which had previously 

owned just 15% of the UK company, 

Nikki retired from the motor industry, 

determined to find a way to make 

businesses and the education sector work 

together to ensure a skillful, employable 

and successful future generation. 

Nikki King says: “I spent my entire 

career in the road transport industry and 

I still have many friends and contacts 

in the sector who want to engage with 

the young people who will become the 

industry’s future. At all of our academies 

in the Skills for Life Trust, whether primary 

or secondary schools, it’s our vision to 

educate and develop our pupils into fully 

rounded people and help to prepare them 

for the adults they will become. 

“There are so many career opportunities 

in the road transport industry and they are 

desperate to inspire the next generation 

and encourage more youngsters to choose 

it as a career. I know we can provide many 

opportunities for students, not only at 

the Skills for Life Trust but throughout the 


country where such skills are badly needed. 

“I know the industry has worked very 

hard to encourage young people to 

consider logistics as a career choice. It was 

only when I joined the world of education 

that I realised what had to be done and 

would be happy to share this knowledge 

should this be of assistance” 

Since 2013, Nikki has worked tirelessly 

in her new field of education. She was the 

first non-teacher to be appointed to the 

Head Teacher Board for the London and 

the South East Region and she has become 

a trouble shooter for the Department 

of Education working with a number of 

Academy Trusts that are not performing 

well. She was appointed Chair of the Skills 

For Life Trust, comprising five academies in 

Kent, in 2014. 

She says “In many ways, the current 

curriculum mandated by Government is just 

not fit for purpose to equip young people 

with the skills, both soft and academic, that 

employers require in the world of work. 

For example, IT is not considered a core 

subject which is quite unthinkable in the 

21st century.” 

“We educate our young people in our 

five academies from the day they step into 

reception classes to work towards the 

adults they will become, as contributing 

successful people, whatever path in life 

they will choose.” 

The Skills For Life Trust has a unique 

programme which includes regular careers 

assemblies where companies discuss all 

the jobs available in their own field of 

commerce. Business mentors are provided 

from Year 9 to assist young people to make 

career decisions and help them with CV 

writing, interview techniques and how to 

behave in the world of work. Additional 

lessons on Life Skills, Sales Techniques, and 

Customer Service are provided with all the 

necessary soft skills woven into the entire 

curriculum. Good mental health as well 

as physical health is a priority in all of the 

schools. 

Nikki continues to be a personal mentor 

to a number of students as she was 

when CEO of Isuzu Truck UK and is fully 

committed to transforming the education, 

and lives, of the Skills For Life Trust pupils. 

She concludes: “I consider myself so 

blessed that in my lifetime I have been able 

to work in a paid role in an industry I was 

passionate about - the commercial vehicle 

industry - and was awarded recognition in 

the form of an OBE, a great honour. 

“Then, when I thought I was retired and 

ready for my slippers and a comfortable 

chair, I was doubly blessed to start again 

in an unpaid role that I am now equally 

passionate about and have been similarly 

honoured. I accept this honour on behalf 

of all the wonderful, committed staff at 

the Skills for Life Trust and thank them for 

putting up with me and eagerly adopting 

my ‘out of the box’ vision. 

“I really hope that central government 

will begin to take notice of what we have 

achieved as I am convinced that we are

Richard! 

I don’t always see eye to eye with a lot of people and I suppose they would 

say the same about me, but I am always keen to give credit where credit is 

due, and I was more than impressed with what Richard Goddard had to say 

in the last issue of Professional Recovery titled: “London Has Fallen”. 

For a long time now I have wondered 

how some of the operators, certainly 

in the centre of the city, manage to 

function at all, never mind the punitive 

remuneration. It is further damning 

evidence that so many leading companies 

are no longer in the industry. We know, 

countrywide, that many people are giving 

up but it is often the case of a poor 

location and very little work. But in London, 

I would have thought the playing field was 

going to be about the same for everyone. 

Although I have to keep reminding myself 

that some operators seem to do alright and 

better than others even doing £46 jobs and 

as long as this situation prevails I can’t see 

how we will ever get a substantial increase. 

It seems that for the last 10 years at least, 

we have all been on a race to the bottom 

and it is difficult to know what pressure 

could be exerted to get the appropriate 

remuneration in place. 

I remember 30 years ago a lot of 

operators went on strike, so to speak, and 

refused to work for the RAC but the timing 

was bad and at that time the rates were 

such a big issue so all that happened was 

that the RAC appointed new operators 

overnight and left the strikers to rot! 

What would happen if that scenario was 

repeated now I am not sure; no-one wants 

to put their head above the parapet, press 

the start pistol and take any risks but the 

pressure on rates is getting worse by the 

month. Call Assist’s recent reduction of 

daily parking from £20 to £16 is another 

hard to swallow situation but while I 

understand why Ben Johnson has taken 

such a step, it is not a good way to treat 

a work-force. He could probably have 

obtained the same result money wise by 

paying his control room staff 25p an hour 

less and see what sort of reaction that got. 

I always think it is difficult to make ends 

meet if you are doing just club work, you 


need other paying customers and, if you 

are lucky, a good Police contract. I also 

think there is perhaps something in doing 

club work if you are a small family business; 

in other words, the owner does the jobs, 

but you need the right location and just the 

right amount of chimney pots. 

Trying to get anything changed in this 

industry seems to be like ‘pulling eye 

teeth’. For 30 years people have been 

trying to get flashing red lights. How can 

something so simple and primitive take so 

many man hours over 30 years and achieve 

absolutely nothing. The country went to 

war in Iraq with one ’phone call but can’t 

sort red lights out with probably half a 

million. It is, therefore, hard to see how 

the low remuneration stalemate can ever 

be resolved, as every operator I know will 

still do loss making jobs, some more often 

than others work providers also need to 

wise up and respond not only to the traffic 

in London but in many other pinch points. 

Look no further than any motorway after 

lunch on a Friday, just slow moving car 

parks. Only when jobs can’t be deployed 

will the ‘shit hit the fan’. 

One day something will happen but I 

fear it won’t be in my lifetime. I would like 

to think that people who matter will read 

Richard’s article and respond but I fear 

that like a lot of other things it will just 

wind up in the waste paper bin. He also 

needs support having what appears to 

be a dickhead for a Mayor which makes a 

mockery of TFL.

now CBE is as busy as ever, thankfully she’s 

found a little time in her schedule to become 

our latest victim... 

Morning Nikki, congratulations on being awarded a CBE, you must be 

thrilled? 

NK Unbelievable, I can’t believe it. I’m receiving it on behalf of the people in 

education; teachers are the unsung heroes of this pandemic. 

I think we can all agree with that, what was your first car? 

NK My father worked for Stratstone’s, a big Daimler dealer in London at the time. 

So the whole family had part exchange vehicles that no one wanted. I had a 

bronze convertible Daimler Conquest with a dickey seat in the back. 

That is some first car, I bet you were popular with your friends. 

NK Yes it was the early 60’s, I was a hippy and every Summer we 

travelled down to Cornwall and I could get about 15 people 

in my car. We started out with six and picked up hitch hikers 

along the way. 

I’ve got the kettle on – Tea or Coffee? 

NK Coffee please. 

And your choice of biscuit with that? 

NK I’m not really a biscuit person, I’ll have a cheese straw. 

And what did little Nikki King want to be when she grew up? 

NK A hotel manager. We had a pub/restaurant in Kent where 

my father was a Cordon Bleu trained chef and I used to sit 

in the kitchen with him watching him work and loved it. Still 

do, cooking is one of my biggest passions. 

Well that leads nicely on to my next question, if I came to your house what 

would you cook me? 

NK That depends on my mood; my latest thing is Vietnamese Fahl but if you 

came for the first time it would be a good old traditional English Roast. 

Extra roasts for me please. You win the lottery this weekend, what’s the first 

thing you buy? 

NK I’ve been very fortunate in my life in that I have everything need so I would 

put the money into helping young people with training and help when they are 

just starting out in life. I’m passionate about helping and giving them a helping 

hand to start their chosen careers when they have a love for what they do. 

You’ve got a rare afternoon to yourself – what do you do? 

NK I like to cook so I’d have a big baking afternoon, just relax and perhaps read. I 

don’t relax much, I’m still very driven.

He certainly is. What was the first concert you went to? 

NK Bob Dylan, Albert Hall, 1965. I’ve been to every single concert he’s had in England 

ever since. 

Tell us one secret about yourself? 

NK I’d rather not share a secret because everyone they’re about has got to die first. 

We don’t want that, what would you sing for your karaoke song? 

NK In Japan I had to do it all the time, the Japanese always got me to sing My Way 

so I’ll stick with that. If I had to have a second choice it would be Take Me Home, 

Country Roads. You have to pick a song that fits your 

voice and I can’t sing, I’ve got a limited range of notes at 

my disposal. 

Who’s you’re favourite TV Detective? 

NK I always like Inspector George Gently, a very underrated 

series. 

Nikki King – The Movie. Who plays the lead role? 

NK Miriam Margolyes. She’s the little fat lady that farts a lot in 

the films about old people being in India. 

As Bob Dylan would say –Blowin’ in the Wind. Handshake 

Poker – who are you playing? 

NK The Queen. I can’t really top that can I. 

You certainly can’t. Frank Skinner has called; you’re on Room 101 this week, what 

goes in? 

NK My top hate is hotel buffet breakfasts together with hotel toast machines. I 

think it’s was terrible when someone decided to get rid of waitresses and give us 

eggs that are glued to the plate, cold bacon that breaks your teeth and rotten 

sausages. 

I’ll just grab a bacon buttie and they’re in, finally what advice would you give the 

young Nikki King? 

NK To realise that everyone doesn’t have to love you. And that life doesn’t end when 

you’re 50, my life changed so much when I was in my late 40’s. Live life to the full.

To say 2020 has been a turbulent year would be an understatement, but we wanted to 

take the opportunity to talk to LV=Britannia Rescue about how this year has developed 

out for their activities and plans. 

Apart from being our longstanding sponsor for the Lifetime Achievement Award, LV= 

were also due to be our sponsor partner for the inaugural vintage recovery vehicle 

display at this year’s Tow Show. 

Chris Keady (Network Manager for LV=Britannia Rescue) kindly gave us some time 

for this ‘in focus’ feature, and we would like to thank Chris and Dave Langham for their 

continued and valued support. 

What plans and aims were 

there for the business ahead 

of the trading year at the start 

of 2020. 

CK LV= Britannia Rescue has 

been continuing to grow over 

the last few years and this 

strategy was due to continue 

in 2020. Coinciding with 

the arrival of a new MD for 

LV= Britannia Rescue and 

the changes to the overall 

LV= group, the aim was to 

continue the drive to be 

‘Best Loved’ in the insurance 

market. 

Although COVID – 19 has 

undoubtedly made a huge 

impact to our plans we have 

still been able to continue trying to develop 

the business. This has hopefully been reflected 

in the support we have tried to provide to our 

network and the service that our customers have 

received this year. 

What changes were needed and how did 

the business have to adapt to cope with the 

situation of the Covid 19 outbreak so early in the 

year? 

CK The first thing the business looked to do was 

resolve the operational challenges and also to 

support our network. LV= Britannia Rescue was 

in a fortunate position that we already operated 

with a number of homeworkers taking claims 

calls, meaning that from an LV= Britannia Rescue 

perspective, we didn’t have as far to go to 

maintain our capacity for our customers. 

Moving everyone to homeworking was still a 

huge undertaking but due to the nature of the 

business, the wider LV= group did a fantastic 

job in prioritising LV= Britannia Rescue staff 

members, recognising the importance of 

maintaining that 24/7 offering for our customers. 

Throughout this period, we always wanted to 

make sure we tried to support our network as 

much as possible. As everyone is aware, our 

network is integral to the service our customers 

receive and we were conscious that this could 

be hugely impacted. As a result, the Network 

Department were one of the first teams across 

the whole business to be fully operational 

working from home, meaning that we could 

continue to support our network as much as

possible, continue to pay invoices so we could make sure cash 

flow to our network continued and provide reassurance and 

support whenever this was needed. 

Alongside that, we implemented a permanent planned rate 

increase as soon as we could to try and support our network. 

Although this was due to be implemented in the summer of 

2020, we felt that accelerating this was the right thing to do 

and demonstrated our long-term support to our network. 

We were initially and have continued to be pleased that our 

volumes (although not always at 100%) remained relatively 

high and stable throughout most of the year, meaning that we 

were able to maintain volume very similar to 2019 going into the 

network. 

Across the wider LV= business, there was an effort to try and 

support our customers through this period as well, recognising 

the impact that COVID was having on them. As a result, LV= set 

up a Green Heart Fund to financially support customers who 

needed assistance, recognising the challenges everyone was 

facing, see below.

How is the business looking to move forward now in to 2021 

within the recognised new normal? 

CK The business is continuing a growth strategy and we are 

hoping to be able to continue that in 2021. It has undoubtedly 

been a tough year for all but we believe that we are in a strong 

position coming out of 2020 to service our customers’ needs 

and continue to support our network. 

One of the biggest changes we have seen from a Network 

Department perspective has been the inability for us to visit our 

network and we are all looking forward to that changing, as it is 

a huge part of the relationship we have with our Agents. 

We have continued to see fantastic support from our 

network in terms of performance, some of our customer 

satisfaction scores have been the highest we have ever 

recorded and it is important that we recognise the work our 

network have done to create this. 

However, it has also being pleasing to see the stability and 

resilience of the network so far throughout this period and we 

need to do as much as we can to support this is 2021.

Haydock Commercial Vehicles Limited, the Scania dealer 

for the Preston-Liverpool-Warrington triangle, Chester 

and north Wales, has invested in £2.7m in a purpose-built, 

state-of-the-art service centre on land adjacent to its existing 

Walton Summit, Preston site. Operations at the new premises 

begin on Monday 9 November 2020, at which point the old 

workshop will be demolished to further extend the site’s secure 

truck, trailer, bus and coach parking area. When complete, the 

new site will occupy 2.5 acres of prime commercial land adjacent 

to Junction 29 of the M6 and within a mile of the intersection of 

the M61 and M65 motorways.

height of five-metres allowing access for trailers and double-deck 

buses. Equipped with new brake rollers, tachograph calibration 

equipment and a range of special tools, the premises also benefit 

from LED lighting throughout.

Nightmare 

Operators in London often have to bear the brunt 

of new traffic measures and restrictions before they 

are rolled out across the country. We’ve spoke to a 

few of them to find out their thoughts. 

Road Runners Recovery 

Mark Crawley said: “The restrictions in London certainly aren’t 

making working in London easy. I don’t think a great deal of 

thought has gone into it. We’ve got a cycle lane close to us that is 

closed to cyclists at the moment because leaves have fallen on it 

and it’s too dangerous for them. But they can’t be maintained as 

the barriers won’t allow access for the road sweeper. 

“We dropped to 20% of our usual work in May although we 

are back up now to around 65%. It took some work at the time 

including furloughing staff who are all back now except for one. 

“Out of hours is now our biggest problem. During the day we’re 

OK but covering the out of hours work is very hard. The traffic 

drops of at around 6pm which I can’t see changing until the New 

Year. 

“Going forward we want to see how the work patterns change 

over the coming weeks before we make any major changes. The 

information we get from Apex regarding work levels is very helpful 

for that. You can read between the lines of the stats that come 

through making them a really useful business tool.”

“The initial lockdown made a big difference to us but we’re 

grateful that most of the clubs stepped in and recognised there 

was an issue, that was nice to get that support. We furloughed 

seven drivers on the initial furlough scheme together with some 

office staff but with the help received from the clubs we were 

able to get through it. We started a new contract with Green Flag 

back in June so that helped bring in extra work. 

“It’s early days at the moment with the latest lockdown but we 

haven’t noticed a drop in work yet, however there is a significant 

drop in work at the weekends so trying to organise staffing levels 

around that is proving to be difficult. Hopefully if it is only for the 

month then I don’t envisage it causing us any major problems. 

I think the upturn in Winter work will start very quick this year 

with the end of Lockdown coinciding with the onset of winter 

conditions. 

“We have plans we’d like to do for next year but it’s very 

difficult as you don’t know what situation we will be in in a couple 

of weeks let alone a few months. We’ve taken delivery of a new 

vehicle this year but unfortunately we haven’t been able to do as 

much training as we’d have like due to the restrictions.”

figures aren’t in yet although the early indications are that work 

is down. However we’re positive and aim to provide a quality

doing OK and then the worked dropped off during Lockdown. It

“In general business could be better. The driving restrictions in 

London are difficult to work with and with the ULEZ restrictions 

I’m now on the lookout for another vehicle. We’re looking a Euro

James McAuliffe said: “Driving and working in London is a 

nightmare at the moment. The signage for the new restrictions 

is not great, extra weight restrictions are being imposed and the 

use of bus lanes is getting less and less. 

“We have experienced drivers who are used to driving in 

London but still we get on average 25 enforcement tickets a 

week. The new measures in place have cameras picking up any 

infringements so it’s extremely difficult conditions. I know it’s

The traditional tarpaulin or sail eyelet or 

grommet is used on many applications, 

from HGV and utility vehicle tarpaulin 

covers, to boat and yacht sails. Press-studs, 

eyelets and popper-type connectors are used 

on a host of different classic car models on 

their hoods and tonneau covers. Originally fitted 

by leather-aproned craftsmen with special 

tools handed down through the generations 

(probably), all these two-piece grommets, 

eyelets and press-studs are readily available but 

how do you fit them now? Reach for these two 

new specialist grommet and eyelet fitting tools 

from Laser Tools (part numbers 7881 and 7882). 

The 7881 kit is aimed at commercial vehicle 

operators and includes the G-clamp style fitting 

tool (which can be screwed or clamped onto 

the bench, or even hand-held), with a 12mm 

and 16mm anvil and punch set. The tool ensures 

proper alignment of the mating components 

during the press and crimp process. It operates 

smoothly and produces a professional result 

every time. A 12mm and 16mm hole punch set 

is also included plus a selection of 12mm and 

16mm grommets. Intended for tarpaulin covers 

and HGV side curtains. 

The 7822 kit includes the same fitting tool 

but with a more comprehensive range of anvils, 

punches and dies that can be used for fitting 

grommets, eyelets, press-studs and poppers. 

Ten hole punches are included from 2mm up 

to 16mm and four sizes of grommet/eyelet are 

supplied: 6.5, 9.5, 12 and 16mm. Press-studs and 

poppers are also included. All these consumable 

items are available separately for both kits.
