Emptyshop frontsonEast Street have been<br />

transformed into Christmas displays of<br />

many cultures as part of the<strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

District Council’s festive vibe.<br />

Trees along the EastStreetgreen have<br />

alsobeen wrapped for theoccasion.<br />

Tumanu Isara­Paiaaua was among<br />

members of theCongregational Christian<br />

Church setting up in the formerSpark shop<br />

besideHello Banana. Next door in the old<br />

Denim Den shop was another Samoan<br />

display and further along was adisplay by<br />

the Filipinio community.<br />

Tumanu saidshe and other members of<br />

the women’s fellowship grouphad worked<br />

on thedisplay,which featured aChristmas<br />

treeaswell as afale,flanked by mannikins<br />

in traditional Samoandress.<br />

The churchmeets regularly at the<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>DomainWalnut Avenuepavilion<br />

under Reverend UosepiPaia.<br />

Tumanu saidthisChristmas wouldbevery<br />

different for Samoanfamilies living in Mid<br />

Canterbury. Theywereused to finishing up<br />

schoolorworkand returningtoSamoa to be<br />

withfamilyoverthe holiday period,but<br />

covid and quarantine rules has made travel<br />

impossible.<br />

Tumanu saidtheir colourfulEast Street<br />

displayrepresented the Samoan Christmas<br />

journey.Interpretive signswill help people<br />

understand thedisplay.<br />

She said others whohad helped included<br />

AnnTafea, Pola Ulisese, Tusi Salima, Sara<br />

Belford and Naito Schuster.<br />

Council’s Welcoming Communities has<br />

arranged for theEast Street walkwaytobe<br />

decorated with tree wraps representingthe<br />

season andthe shop front displays span<br />

severalblocks andcultures on the other side<br />

of the road.<br />

Mayor Neil Brown will officiallylightup<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>’s Christmas tree in Baring<br />

Square East tomorrow (Friday) as the Light<br />

up the Nightsfestivalgets under way.<br />

Thefestival includes aBuskers Night on<br />

Thursday December 3and on Friday<br />

December 11 there will be outdoor<br />

Christmas movies in the square.Movies<br />

include Kung Fu Panda Holiday, Olaf’s<br />

Frozen Adventures andThe Polar Express.<br />

Methven musicians who were in the limelight at bandquest recently<br />

were Livewired from Mt Hutt College and Ultimate Noodlers from<br />

Methven Primary School. The Noodlers were third at their Canterbury<br />

regional night while Livewired won the musicians award. Livewired<br />
