Tenders in for $51.6m job<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> mayor Neil Brown says<br />
therewill be good opportunity for<br />
localtradies to work on the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council’s new<br />
$51.6 million civic and library<br />
building.<br />
Tenders for the job closed<br />
yesterdayand will gobeforean<br />
evaluationteam of councillors,<br />
senior staffand others at ameeting<br />
on December 7.<br />
The wholeproject is being<br />
managed by Logic Group,which was<br />
appointed to the job two years ago.<br />
Logic was engaged to oversee the<br />
designand construction of the<br />
building until its handover.<br />

project manager had ameeting with<br />
potential builders and locals to see<br />
which parts they could play.’’<br />
It would be practical for local<br />
electricians, plumbers andpainters<br />
to workonthe building and local<br />
concrete contractors could have<br />
roles, he said.<br />

Builders havebeeninsertingsteel<br />
beams into the former iSite<br />
buildingonEastStreet, in<br />
preparationfor its relocation.<br />
Thebuildingwill be moved to the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Airport where it will be<br />
anew clubroomsfor the Mid<br />
Canterbury Aero Club.<br />
Clubpresident Ian Begbie said<br />
otherpreparationwork at the East<br />
Street site includedthe removal of<br />
atree at the weekend.Room was<br />
beingcreatedsothe building can<br />
be transported to the airport,<br />
where anew concrete foundation<br />
was beinglaid.<br />
Mr Begbie said the removal<br />
wouldhappen in the next two<br />
weeks and waslikelytobeatnight<br />
to minimisedisruption to traffic.<br />
He saidthe old aero clubbuilding<br />
hadbeen demolished and members<br />
were operating from acontainer<br />
while the relocationprogressed.<br />
They looked forwardtotheir new<br />
digs.Thebuildinghas to go by early<br />
January so contractors working in<br />
the CBDcan begin the next phase.<br />

be open for shoppersand parking<br />
soon, easingthe frustrations of<br />
retailersasthey gear up for their<br />

Preliminary geotechnical work<br />

wayonthe site of the new building,<br />
which willstand proudly on the<br />
cornerofHavelock Street and Baring<br />

‘‘It will be agood project, anice<br />
building and it will link wellwith the<br />
upgrade of the CBD andBaring<br />
Square East,’’ Mr Brown said.<br />
The building, which incorporatesa<br />
newlibrary and council’s headquarters,<br />
will taketwo years to build.<br />

New signs<br />
for track<br />

Some trampers hadrecently got into<br />
serioustroublebecause they had<br />
chosenone of the‘‘hard’’waysto<br />
WoolshedCreek hut and were luckily<br />
spotted by other trampers and<br />
rescued.‘‘That made us realise we<br />
needed to improvethe signs.’’<br />
Society members built the kiosks<br />
and were grateful for the funds<br />
donated.<br />
MrAustin said the track wasalready<br />
busyand the Woolshed Creek hut fully<br />
bookedfrom nowuntilApril.There<br />
was plentyofroom outside for tents.<br />
He said societymembersspent<br />
about 2000 volunteerhours on the<br />
track last year, bringingit to a<br />
standardthat could be easily walked<br />
by families with young children.<br />
PlainsRotary Club spokesperson<br />
JohnDuncan said thetrack was a<br />
great community asset andenjoyed by<br />
locals and visitors alike. The kiosks<br />
werepart of alegacyproject to mark<br />
the club’s 50th anniversary.<br />
He said the societyvolunteers were<br />
unsung heroes because maintenance<br />
was hardwork with toolsand<br />
materials having to be carried up the<br />
hill.The club was proud to give its<br />
support.<br />
The occasion had been scheduled<br />
earlierinthe year but delayedbybad<br />
weather andCovid19.<br />
Progress continuesonthe new<br />
Sharplin Falls track. The old trackhas<br />
beenshutsince 2015 following<br />
rockfalls in the area.<br />
The society has mapped anew track<br />
to the popularfalls andiscurrently<br />
workingonenvironmental<br />
assessmentsand on engineering<br />
designs for the new bridgesrequired.<br />
