Judy’s
bid to be
‘fastest’
to 100
marathons
• By Chris Barclay
JUDY BROCK is agonisingly
close to an acrylic running shoe
fitting the occasion perfectly,
a fairy tale ending to what has
been a hasty marathon journey
for the distance athlete.
Brock, who lives in Mt
Pleasant, is two certified race
finishes, or 84.39km away,
from upgrading her associate
membership of the 100
Marathon Club New Zealand to
the ‘fastest’ runner to reach the
milestone.
She has a bib for the Alpine
Marathon in Hanmer Springs
on Saturday and seven days later
in Wanganui, fitness permitting,
Brock will usurp Christchurch
marathon man Norman Chan,
who took six years, five months
and eight days to go from zero
to 100.
Brock ran her first marathon
in New York on November 2,
2014 after a mate dared the pair
to tackle the iconic route to mark
their 50th birthdays.
The challenge also enabled
Brock to follow in father Bob’s
footsteps. The senior constable
was killed when a helicopter
crashed at Franz Joseph glacier
in 1986, a few months after his
10th marathon at Buller.

Green light for $27m Naval Point plan
Closure of
Magazine Bay
marina
on cards
A $27 million plan to redevelop
Lyttelton’s Naval Point has been
given the goahead by the Banks
Peninsula Community Board.
The Naval Point Development
Plan, which was developed in
partnership with Te Hapū o
Ngāti Wheke (Rāpaki) Rūnanga,
includes an
expanded public
boat ramp,
reorganised
waterfront and
new breakwater.
The board
Tori Peden
also has
requested city
council staff start working on a
leasing plan for all Naval Point
users and recommended the city
council approve the closure of
the Magazine Bay marina, once
existing licences expire or are
terminated according to their
licence terms and conditions.
This will go to a future council
meeting, with the date still to be
set.

“While the board has

NATURAL CYCLE: Thousands of dead krill turned Southshore beach pink last week.

Cycleway growth
CYCLISTS SAY the growing
network of major cycle routes
in the city is encouraging them
to make more trips by bike, new
survey findings show.
Earlier this year the city
council repeated the Cycle Users’
Survey that first ran in 2018.
This year 303 surveys were
completed, which involves interviews
with people found riding
their bikes on the city’s major
cycle routes.
City council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas said 82 per cent of those
who took part this year stated
the new cycleways have
encouraged them to use their
bikes more.
“It is clear from the responses
to the survey that the growing
network of major cycle routes in
the city is making a difference
to how people move around,” he
said.
“It was great to see people
talking about how they are now
happy for their kids to bike to
school or how they now cycle
into town if they are going to
meet friends for dinner.
Washed up krill
turns beach pink
SOUTHSHORE beach turned
bright pink last week after the
high tide left millions of whale
krill washed up.
Sea birds are feasting at the
beach on the swimming crabs
which form important food for
whales and other sea life.
Otago University’s Marine
Science Professor Steve King said
the summer stranding is nothing
to be alarmed about.
“It’s a natural cycle of the pelagic
food where climate change
is happening but it is mostly
manifested in the warm water
conditions we are seeing right
now.
“There’s a raft of red-pink
animals on the wave wash on
the beach, that’s a very typical
thing to happen in the summer
time in these sub-antarctic
waters.”
King said the red crabs have a
pigment which reflects the pink
colour.

encourages more riders to get on bikes
Steffan
Thomas
“The reason we are building
the cycleway network is to make
it safer and easier for people of
all ages to get around the city by
bike so it is really heartening to
hear about how the cycleways
are making people re-think their
transport options.’’
The survey
covered topics
such as
trip-purpose,
cycling frequency,
mode
of transport
prior to cycling,
cycleway
influence on
participation
and safety and
comfort perceptions.
The largest individual age
group of respondents were those
aged between 35 and 49-yearsold,
representing 30 per cent of
the results.
Overall, nearly 60 per cent
said they ride at least five times a
week, and more than 80 per cent
twice a week for work, education,
meeting friends and family, or for
fitness purposes.
Cyclists have also reported that
they feel safer on the road – in
2020, 92 per cent agreed that the
cycleways improved safety, which
was a decrease from 94 per cent
in 2018.
However, safety was still a

concern. Many described being
knocked from their bikes due
to vehicles using the cycle lane
when turning into driveways or
approaching intersections.
“Safety is still a concern for
some. As part of the survey, we
received lots of comments about
the behaviour of drivers and the
constant need for people cycling
to be vigilant around cars,” said
Thomas.
“Whether you are going by bike
or by car, we all need to take care

Meghan Misunderstood
by Sean Smith
Meghan Misunderstood is a pioneering book that sets the
record straight on the most talked about, unfairly vilified and
misrepresented woman in the world. Meghan was eleven when she
first advocated for women’s rights; a teenager when she worked in
a soup kitchen feeding the homeless; a popular actress when she
campaigned for clean water in Africa and passionately championed
gender equality in a speech to a United Nations Women’s
Conference. Even before she met Prince Harry, hers was an
extraordinarily accomplished life. Now, Sean Smith, the UK’s leading
celebrity biographer, pulls no punches as he reveals the remarkable
and powerful story of this self-made, intelligent American woman
with a strong social conscience who has made such an impact on
our lives.

The Untold Story of the British Family Firm that Became
a Global Brand - reebok
By Joe Foster
The remarkable story of how Joe Foster developed Reebok into one of
the world’s most famous sports brands, having started from a small
factory in Bolton.
Since the late 19th century, the Foster family had been hand-making
running shoes, supplying the likes of Eric Liddell and Harold
Abrahams - later immortalised in the film Chariots of Fire - as well
as providing boots to most Football League clubs. But a family feud
between Foster’s father and uncle about the direction of their business
led to Joe and his brother Jeff setting up a new company, inspired by
the success of Adidas and Puma, and so Reebok was born.
No Time Like The Future
An Optimist Considers Mortality
By Michael J Fox
The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage
sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in
Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other
movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife
and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally
engaged in Parkinson’s advocacy work, raising global awareness of the
disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation
for Parkinson’s Research, the world’s leading non-profit funder of PD
science. His two previous bestselling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always
Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the
while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this
outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.
Down South
In Search of the Great Southern Land
by Bruce Ansley
In Down South, writer Bruce Ansley goes on a journey back to his
beloved South Island.
From Curio Bay to Golden Bay, in Down South writer Bruce Ansley
sets off on a vast expedition across the South Island, Te Waipounamu,
visiting the places and people who hold clues to the south’s famous
character. Not so very long ago, the South Island had most of New
Zealand’s people and just about all of the money. Gold miners found
fortunes in the hills and rivers, sheep barons straddled mountains,
valleys and plains. Wealthy southerners ruled the government. Where
now lies the South Island’s golden fleece? And what is its future.
Speed Kings
Australia and New Zealand’s quest to win the Indy 500,
the world’s greatest motor race. By John Smailes
The fascinating, definitive story of Australia and New Zealand’s quest to
win the world’s greatest motor race. Winning the Indianapolis 500, the
greatest spectacle in motorsport, has been a quest for Australians and
New Zealanders since the first race in 1911. Seventeen have tried and two
have succeeded: Scott Dixon in 2008 and Will Power in 2018. Rupert
Jeffkins, Australia’s original speed king, entered the first Indy 500 and on
his second attempt in 1912 came within five kilometres of victory. He and
Italian Ralph De Palma created legend when they pushed their car to the
finish line after it blew up while leading. Speed Kings tells Jeffkins’ full story
for the first time. it tells the story of the Australian and New Zealand drivers,
team owners, engineers, even commentators who’ve made the Brickyard
their quest.

‘I’d crawl to the end, I want that bling’
“I ran with his photo on
my back when I did my 10th
marathon (also Buller) which was
really neat as a memorial to him,”
Brock said.
The 56-year-old admin worker
originally figured she would
be one and done after the Big
Apple but her mindset changed
somewhere along the route from
Staten Island through Brooklyn.
“I was really nervous. I trained
hard, I didn’t drink alcohol for
six months.
“I really took it seriously and
during it I felt like Forrest Gump,
I felt like I could keep going
round Central Park. It was just
the most amazing experience.”
Brock was the 20,675th finisher
in 4.16:43, and since then her
placing and time haven’t exactly
been her driving force – stopping
the clock has been key.
And providing she completes
the Wanganui 3 Bridges course
on December 12 she will beat
Chan’s mark by four months
and become the 14th female club
member – and 51st overall – to
bring up three figures.
Ironically, had a global pandemic
not emerged in 2020,
Brock would have probably
reached century status on November
1, back where it all began.
“It was going to be one to a 100,
New York and back again, but
obviously Covid stuffed that up.
It’s sad, but it’s not a big deal is it?
People are dying.”
MEMORY:
Judy Brock
ran her 10th
marathon with
this photo
of her father
Bob Kram,
who died in
a helicopter
crash shortly
after he
reached the
milestone.
Brock then targeted Hanmer
Springs to reach the century
with family and friends, but
the cancellation of the Aoraki
Mount Cook Marathon due to
bad weather on October 3 forced
another revision.
She battled through the recently-verified
Kaikoura Mountain to
Sea Marathon on October 24 –
the only time she has finished last
– in a touch under six hours.
That still sits uncomfortably
after she was convinced to enter
at short notice by husband Stu.
“I had this ‘tail-end Charlie’ on
his push-bike for company. He
had a very sore arse by the end. I
told him I was sorry to keep him
out there so long,” she said.
Brock, whose best time is the
3.55:00 or so she recorded in
New Plymouth’s Mountain to
Surf Marathon, bounced back in
Queenstown last weekend and
is well primed for the challenge
ahead.
“You don’t have to train. I
swim twice a week and I bike
twice a week. I was doing a lot of
5ks and 10ks but (now) walking
the dog is enough. At the height
of it, I was doing 25 to 30 (marathons)
a year. One weekend I did
two,” she said.
Brock originally thought she’d
stop hitting the tarmac after
running Hawaii for her 50th, but
decided to push on.
She nominated Paris and
Auckland as her favourite endurance
tests and given the current
climate, Brock was grateful to
have run overseas.
“I feel very blessed that I did
the Great Wall of China, Buenos
Aires in Argentina and London,”
she said.
And no, Brock does not have a
DNF on her record, bristling at
the mere suggestion.
“I’d crawl to the end, I want
that bling, we love the medal.”
Yet, Wanganui is the end of the
road. The club’s shoe will take
pride of place with the framed
medals from London and New
York.
“I’m booked in with the surgeon
the day after I finish,” Brock
revealed.
“After about 80 marathons I
said to my doctor: ‘I’m having
trouble, I’m running like crap.’ I
knew I had a tear in my hip flexor
so he sent me to a surgeon who
told me: ‘You need a new hip’.
“People go: ‘It’s all that running’.
Unfortunately it’s a
hereditary thing. I’ve had to runwalk
and I’ve had some painful
moments.
“I’ll run as far as I can, it takes
me a couple of hours longer
now,” she said, eyeing a more
leisurely pursuit – lawns bowls at
Redcliffs.

CULTURE IS the way we live,
the combination of our beliefs,
what we do and how and why we
do it.
Locally and throughout New
Zealand there are many different
cultures. The original Maaori
culture, is strongly based on the
interdependence between people
(taangata) and the environment
(whenua) with the belief that the
health of the people comes from
the health of the environment.
Western culture is dominant
across NZ, and while there
was strong connection to the
environment centuries ago, it has
gradually changed to one which
believes people are independent
of nature, can take whatever
resources they want, and have
limitless growth. These beliefs are
leading to massive degradation
of much of our biosphere, and
ironically, risk irreversibly changing
our earth to be uninhabitable
for humans.
Locally and throughout NZ/
Aotearoa we could change this
culture, by listening to, learning
from and working with Maori,
and incorporating more of their
culture and knowledge into our
daily lives.
We could all make a start by
saying “hi” or “kia ora” to a
neighbour, instead of keeping to
ourselves and rushing here and
there, and working long hours
for some things we later find we
didn’t really need.
Chat to neighbours, and spend
a little more time being active in
our community, doing recreation
or helping others or enjoying and
caring for the environment.
We may then see our community
as part of an environment,
where people recognise, connect
to, and care for each other, their
locality and wildlife, as guardians
(kaitiaki), because the key to
healthy and prosperous people
is a healthy and productive environment.
Our pledge on culture and
recreation for 2020 is support
a (low carbon emissions) local
cultural or sporting activity every
month.
ESTUARY MATTERS
Sea captain one of
Woolston’s biggest fans
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust is a non-profit
organisation formed to protect one of New Zealand’s most
important coastal wetlands. Each week, board members will
discuss matters regarding the estuary, its rich history and what
makes it unique. This week Bill Simpson writes about the man
behind Charlesworth Wetland Reserve
CHARLESWORTH Wetland
Reserve on the edge of the
estuary is a living memorial to
one of Woolston’s biggest fans.
Captain William
Charlesworth was a sea captain
trading between Australia,
India and England but on his
first voyage to Christchurch in
the mid-1850s he instantly fell in
love with the new town.
Within days, he had purchased
land on Ferry Rd near
the steam wharf on the Heathcote
River.
He acquired other properties
including three hotels in Lyttelton,
pastoral land along the
estuary edge and urban properties
on the corner of Kilmore
and Madras Sts.
He named his Ferry Rd property
Saxon Farm (his trading
ship was the Royal Saxon) and
built himself a grand house
which he called Saxon Villa.
Newspapers referred to him
as a gentleman and he had local
status as a sea captain but he
kept a low profile in local affairs.
His only recorded public
position was as a member of the
Woolston School Committee.
Across the Tasman, Charlesworth
is known as the man who
first bought elephants, tigers
and bears to Australia.
He collected the
animals in India and
then sold them to
colonists in Hobart, Melbourne
and Sydney. One of his
elephants, Tommy, toured
widely within Australia and
become quite famous.
After buying land here,
Charlesworth persuaded siblings
to come to New Zealand
with their families, but his only
child, Frederick Towns Charlesworth,
died at the age of 23 from
diphtheria.
Charlesworth died in 1875
aged 60 of blood poisoning from
an accident while chopping a
tree down near his house.
Volunteers are welcome to
assist in maintaining Charlesworth
Reserve, the team meets
every Sunday at 3pm.

Water safety plan called a milestone
THE CITY council’s Akaroa
and Takamatua Water Safety
Plan has been approved by the
drinking water assessor on
behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The plan is one of seven the
council is responsible for, under
the Health Act, that need to be
updated and submitted to the
drinking water assessor every
five years.
To date,
only the city
council and
Hurunui District
Council
have had water
safety plans
approved
Pauline
Cotter
under the
Government’s
Drinking
Water Safety Plan Framework,
which was introduced in 2018
following the Havelock North
Drinking Water Inquiry.
Chairwoman of the council’s
three waters, infrastructure and
environment committee Pauline
Cotter said it represents a huge
milestone.
“This is Christchurch City
Council’s first water safety plan
approved under the Government’s
new risk assessment
criteria,” she said.
“Staff should be congratulated
on a major achievement for
the Akaroa and Takamatua
water supply, and the residents
of those towns can be extra
confident their drinking-water
supply network is safe and
secure.”
The Akaroa and Takamatua
shared water supply network
draws its drinking water
from four streams and two
wells before being filtered and
chlorinated at a local treatment
plant which was constructed in
2015.
The city council is currently
working to resubmit its
Christchurch and Lyttelton
Water Safety Plan before the
end of this year to demonstrate
it is supplying safe and secure
drinking water for residents.
General manager city services
David Adamson said having the
first water safety plan across the
line will benefit the process for
the others.
“Having the approval of
the drinking water assessor
means we’re now in a better
position to fully understand the
expectations and to apply what
we’ve learned to our other water

“We have confirmation that
the way we assess and manage
public health risks to our water
supply networks, under the new
framework, is robust and valid.
We can now take this model and
apply it to our other water safety
plans, which will benefit the

Alpine Fault rupture: What will it feel like?
• By Jamie Morton
THE NEXT major rupture of the
South Island’s Alpine Fault will
prove one of the largest – if not
the biggest – that earthquakes
Kiwis have ever experienced.
But what will it actually feel
like?
The geology of New Zealand
makes that an incredibly
complex question to answer
– but a new study evaluating
millions of different earthquake
scenarios will give us a much
better idea.
The Alpine Fault, which runs
about 600km up the western
side of the South Island between
Milford Sound and Marlborough,
poses one of the biggest
natural threats to New Zealand –
especially Canterbury, the West
Coast, and Otago.
It has a clear geologic record
of rupturing around every three
centuries – and 2017 marked
the 300th anniversary of what is
thought to have been a magnitude
8.0 earthquake that moved
one side of the fault by about 8m
in a matter of seconds.
Recent studies undertaken
as part of the joint AF8 project
have suggested a big quake could
block South Island highways
in more than 120 places, leave
10,000 people cut off, and cost
the economy about $10 billion.
BIG THREAT: The Alpine Fault, which runs about 600km up the western side of the South
Island, poses one of the biggest natural threats to New Zealand. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES
Now, a team of scientists led
by Professor John Townend
of Victoria University of
Wellington—Te Herenga Waka
and Dr Caroline Holden of GNS
Science aim to build a state-ofthe-art,
3D picture of the ground
shaking effects we could expect
from future large earthquakes on
the fault.
“When the Alpine Fault next
ruptures, it will produce seismic
waves that propagate out in
all directions,”
Townend said.
“The ground
shaking we feel
in different parts
of the country
during an earthquake
is controlled
by the size
of the earthquake
and aspects of
John
Townend
how the fault is slipping but also
by the geological structure the
seismic waves encounter as they
propagate over long distances
and by the local geology right
beneath our feet.
“What we’re interested in is,
how do variations in the likely
characteristics of the earthquake
affect ground shaking at different
locations in the country?”
Scientists say the intensity of
the shaking in the most affected
areas – particularly West Coast
spots – could be unlike anything
we’ve felt before.
The next Alpine Fault earthquake
would likely also be a
long-duration event – unzipping
the crust for as much as three
minutes – because of the sheer
length of the fault.
“By comparison, the Kaikōura
earthquake in 2016 ruptured a
total fault length of 200km in the
space of about two minutes,” said
Holden.
“Given what we know from
geological studies of the Alpine
Fault, we’re anticipating a major
magnitude 8.0-plus earthquake,
rupturing 500km of the crust,
so the shaking will be felt
throughout the South Island, but
the intensity and duration will
ultimately depend on what happens
on the fault.”
Townend said detailed
geological and geophysical studies
of the Alpine Fault over the past
decade – and the Canterbury
and Kaikōura quakes themselves
– had done much to fill in
knowledge gaps about potential
Alpine Fault scenarios.
“But we haven’t yet witnessed
a rupture of this fault ourselves,
so our understanding of what
ground motions it will produce
is based on hypotheses about
how much of the fault ruptures,
how fast, and to what depth . . .
and the elastic properties of the
Earth,” he said. •Turn to page 18
Edith Cavell Corner
New Edith Cavell Manager, Scott Wallace, enjoying a morning cuppa with resident, Denis Stanton.
New Manager for
Edith Cavell as
Refresh Takes Shape
These are exciting times for Edith Cavell as a refresh has begun to
brighten, lighten and modernise Sumner’s very own Care Home,
whilst retaining all the charm and features that we know and love.
Edith Cavell also welcomes a new face, as we bid a sad but fond farewell
to Moira when she handed over the reigns to new Manager, Scott.
Scott joins after a long and successful career in the hotel industry in
New Zealand and Australia.
Scott explains, “I got to the stage when I was looking for a change,
and as my parents became older I realised the real need for them to
have an enjoyable retirement with quality care available. This really
became front of mind and set me on a new pathway.”
Scott says there are a lot of similarities between running a hotel and
a Care Home, in terms of really putting the residents first. “Creating
an exceptional experience for the residents is first and foremost, so
managing the day to day aspects such as cleaning and cooking are
pretty similar,” says Scott
However, one key difference is the important task of overseeing quality
nursing care. Scott says, “We have a genuinely passionate and caring
team including our fantastic Clinical Services Manager, Maria Crone,
who is doing an outstanding job.”
Another very positive difference is the enjoyment Scott is finding from
forging personal relationships with residents and their families. “To
meet these wonderful people and hear their amazing stories is the
best job satisfaction anyone could wish for,” he says.
Scott believes the refurbishment will reaffirm Edith Cavell as a truly
valuable asset to the Sumner Community.
“You can already see the new, but true to character, colour scheme
from the street and we’ve already been receiving favourable
comments,” he says.
Scott is really looking forward to meeting more of Edith Cavell’s wider
family members at the Christmas BBQ on December 9th.
“I’ve been really blown away by the support and enthusiasm shown
from our local community, offering to come and sing and support us
as one of their very own,” says Scott.
Watch this space for more news and updates on Edith Cavell’s refurbishment.

Newly-developed methods
of extracting information

“By analysing these rupture
scenarios mathematically,
you can calculate the
ground shaking in different
places – but you can realistically
only do that for a
limited range of scenarios
because simulating the
propagation of seismic
waves through complex
geological structures is a
very large computational
task.”
The key to evaluating
a broader range of
earthquake rupture
scenarios could lie in
newly-developed methods
of extracting information
from background seismic
noise – or what Townend
called the Earth’s “hum”.
“Much of what we record
with seismometers is noise
generated by ocean waves,”
he said.
“It looks pretty random
but embedded in the
incoherence are useful
signals that tell us how
seismic waves propagate
between different parts of
the Alpine Fault and, say,
locations in Christchurch
or Nelson or wherever you
like.”
Techniques for extracting
those signals from the
noise recordings have been
developed by members
of the team and applied
successfully to faults in
PEOPLE ARE being invited
to play an interactive online
game that will test their
knowledge of what items
belong in the red, yellow
and green wheelie bins.
The game, which people
can play on their smartphones
and online has been
developed by city council
staff and is the latest tool in
the ongoing campaign to
help people bin good.
The game requires players
to drag selected items into
either the red, green or yellow
bin.If they put the item
in the right bin, they earn
points. If they put the item
in the wrong bin, the bin
shakes and they get an X on
the scoreboard. The correct
bin will light up.
The items used in the
game were selected because
they are ones that people
often get confused about
and put in the wrong bin.
Said council resource
recovery manager Ross
Trotter. “The success of
our kerbside rubbish and
recycling service depends
on people putting the right
California and Japan.
The novelty of this approach
is that calculating
how different patterns of
slip on the fault affected
ground shaking at locations
of interest throughout
the South Island and
southern North Island
could be done without having
to simulate the entire
wave propagation process.
Townend said the approach
meant they could
efficiently and accurately
simulate millions of different
earthquakes.
“This enables us to
compute realistic ground
shaking in population
centres and at other
vulnerable locations in
stuff in the right bin. This
new game is a fun, interactive
way of teaching people
about what bin they should
use for different items.
“The contents of the green
wheelie bin get processed
and turned into compost.
That cannot happen if there
is too much non-organic
material in the bin. Likewise,
the contents of the
yellow wheelie bin cannot
be recycled if non-recyclable
items are included.
“Our goal is to minimise
the amount of waste going
to landfill so that’s why we
need people to put the right
stuff in the right bin.
response to many more
earthquake rupture
scenarios than can be
practicably studied using
conventional approaches,”
Townend said.
“This means that we
can investigate a far more
comprehensive range of
scenarios that take into
account the latest information
we have about the
fault’s current state, and
obtain realistic probabilistic
estimates of the shaking
that will occur in inevitable
future large Alpine Fault
earthquakes.”
The new study is being
supported with a $960,000
grant from the Marsden
Fund. – NZ Herald
Game to test your
bin waste knowledge
“If you are confused
about what goes in each
of the bins, give the game
a try. I also recommend
that you use our updated
wheelie bin app. It has a
great search function which
you can use if you are
uncertain about which bin
a particular items belongs
in. All you have to do is
enter the name of the item
you want to dispose of and
it will tell you which bin to
put it in.’’

More funds
to preserve
heritage?
• By Louis Day
MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel has
floated the idea of rolling out
a targeted rate which would
be used to preserve the city’s
heritage.
This would result in an additional
charge being added on to
the overall rates bill residents and
businesses receive.
The targeted rate would charge
each property the same unlike
the majority of the rates bill
which is calculated based on
property value.
The money would then be used
to establish a fund which would
only be put towards the repair
and maintenance of the city
council’s tangible and intangible
heritage, ringfencing the money
and protecting it from the tug of
war between projects and assets
that can occur when the council
arranges its budget.
Dalziel thought protecting
Christchurch’s heritage was
especially important after losing
so much of it to the Canterbury
earthquake sequence.

Call for rates adjustment
• By Louis Day
AN ADJUSTMENT to how the
city council charges for rates
which would see expensive
properties pay more and those
on the other end of the spectrum
pay less, has been called for.
City councillor Jake McLellan
from left-leaning Labour-aligned
group The People’s Choice is the
person behind the call. He sees the
adjustment as a progressive move
towards ensuring everybody pays
according to their means.
However, councillors from
opposing right-leaning political
group Independent Citizens see
this as “completely ridiculous”
and an attempt to implement a
wealth tax “through the backdoor
of local government.”
While the majority of the
rates bill residents across the city
council’s jurisdiction are charged
is determined by property value,
there is a relatively small fixed
charge called the uniform annual
general charge.
This charge is currently set
at $132 and is added on to the
overarching rates bill of all properties
regardless of their value.
This is less than half the $439 the
Auckland Council charges its
constituents.
McLellan thought this “flat
tax” approach was regressive and
should be scrapped entirely or at
least reduced.

PRINCIPLE:
Jake McLellan
says the “flat
tax” approach
should be
scrapped.
He believed a more progressive
strategy was needed where the
value of properties were taken
into account.
He said this was less about
money and more about principle.
“Under this approach, most
people would actually be better
off, people in Fendalton would
have to pay a little more, but I’m
happy with that,” he said.
“This is about people paying
their fair share and paying according
to their means.
“We should be trying to reduce
the rates burden to those who
need it in these trying times.”
City council staff have been
asked by councillors to provide
them with a report on a review

of the uniform annual general
charges. Any changes to the
charge would require public consultation
before being made.
Deputy Mayor and The
People’s Choice caucus leader
Andrew Turner said he would
not like to see these charges increase
but would not say whether
he wanted to see them decrease
until he had seen the work produced
from staff.
Ensuring there was a “fair and
equitable” distribution of charges
was needed though, he said.
City councillor and member
of Independent Citizens Sam
MacDonald thought abolishing
or reducing the uniform annual
general charges would be “completely
ridiculous.”
“It is out of touch with the
hard-working ratepayers of
Christchurch,” he said.
MacDonald questioned why a
Labour-aligned councillor from
The People’s Choice was pursuing
what appeared to be a wealth
tax when Prime Minister Jacinda
Ardern had ruled one out this
term.
“I don’t know why they are
trying to implement one through
the back door of local government.”
Fellow city councillor and
Independent Citizens member
James Gough saw this as a “very
blunt and poorly thought out attempt
at a wealth tax.”
“Just because someone resides
in an area that has a higher average
land value does not in any
way correspond to their affluence,
cashflow or ability to pay,”
he said.
“You would essentially be saying
that a pensioner who has the same
sized house on the same sized
section in one part of town needs
to pay considerably more for their
rubbish collection and council
services than someone who lives
on the other side of town.
“The people who it would
really punish are those on fixed
incomes such as pensioners
who struggle as it is to pay their
rates.”

Message from the Principal
At Marian College, as 2020 draws to a
close, we celebrate our students who have
all persevered during this challenging year.
This year began with excitement for the Year
9 students starting high school and we all
looked forward to the busy calendar of events,
making new friendships and taking on new
learning. No-one could have anticipated a
global pandemic, but our students coped
with the changes required with courage and
commitment. As a Catholic Special Character
school, our Gospel and school values have
stood us in good stead in 2020.
We are proud of our staff who worked hard
to provide home learning during lockdown,
quickly adapting to full online teaching
practices and keeping in close contact with our
students. They were committed to maintaining
every opportunity for progress and success.
We are equally proud of our students who
also had to adjust to a new way of working
and managed very well. On their return
to school, they had a renewed respect for
the relationships in our school-both with
friends and with their teachers. Our sports
and cultural teams quickly picked up their
competitive spirit on our return back to school
and were involved in summer and winter
events ranging from Theatre sports to korfball.
We were also fortunate to be able to celebrate
our Marian College Feast Day – a wonderful,
long-standing tradition.
Thank you to our families for their support
during this year, we have
valued working with you.
As a family, faith-based
school, we appreciate
working together for the
benefit of the students.
We look forward to an exciting year in
2021, as the design and plans for our new
school will be finalised and work begins on
building, ready for our opening in 2023 at the
new site in Papanui. We anticipate sharing
the innovative design with our community at
the start of the school year.
Wishing you every blessing this Christmas.

Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
Christmas shopping made easy!
Delicious mueslis, granolas and porridges.
A great gluten free range as well.
For the cooks amongst you, a good selection
of nuts, seeds and dried fruit.
Beautiful handmade Christmas cards

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Christmas is a great time for passing down recipes that are tried and true becoming
traditional family favourites. The owner of this recipe says her mum used to make
the pudding on Christmas Eve and would take the bowl and wooden spoon around
everyone in the house to stir the mixture and make a wish.
Make a Wish Christmas Pudding
You will need:
• 1 ½ tbsp butter
• 1 ½ tsp baking soda
• 1 ½ cups of boiling water
• 1 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ cups mixed fruit or sultanas
• ¾ cup sugar
Method:
1. In a glass or stainless steel bowl,
melt the butter (over hot water)
and dissolve the baking soda.
2. Add the boiling water and
sugar.
3. When cool, add flour and
mixed fruit.
4. Stir all the ingredients together
and make a Christmas wish.
5. Cover bowl with a tea towel and
allow to stand overnight.
The next day:
• Place mixture into a greased
bowl or ice-cream container,
cover with tinfoil and place in a
pot of water, just deep enough
so the bowl doesn’t float.
• Boil pudding for four hours and
check regularly to make sure
the water has boiled dry. Top
up carefully with extra water if
required.
• Serve with heaps of Chantilly
cream!
Chantilly
Cream
You will need:
• 1 x bottle of cream
• ½ tsp vanilla essence
• 1 tbsp icing sugar to
sweeten
Method:
Put cream, vanilla essence
and icing sugar in a bowl and
whisk until light and fluffy with
softly formed peaks. Cover and
refrigerate until ready to serve.

Shops bursting with
festive gift ideas
The countdown to the big day is well underway, so making up the
Christmas gift list will now be a top priority… if you haven’t already done so.
Finding those special gifts and stocking fillers as
well as the Christmas treats for the table is so easy at
our city’s malls and shopping centres, where the shops
are bursting with festive merchandise.
Every woman likes to receive body pampering
gifts, and there is a huge selection of these priced
to suit all budgets at the many pharmacies and gift
shops around the city. Perfume is another favourite
and again there is a wide selection to choose from,
ranging from exciting new releases to the well-known
fragrances that have stood the test of time. Lingerie,
jewellery, fashion accessories, homewares and decor
items – there’s no end to the ideas for the women on
the list.
The men are equally well catered for, from the
sophisticated metro-male boyfriends, to the car-crazy
brothers and the DIY enthusiast and keen gardener
husbands and dads. Choose from clothing, books,
tools, personal grooming items and gadgets to put a
smile on their face on Christmas morning.
Speaking of smiles, nothing gives families more joy
than seeing the excitement of the children opening
their presents. Whether they are delivered by Santa
or snuck under the tree by mum and dad, the cuddly
toys, games, dolls and building blocks, the candy
canes, toy trucks and pretty dresses currently filling
the shops will bring squeals of sheer happiness from
the smallest family members.
The tweens and teens usually have their own ideas
about what they want for Christmas, so the gift cards
offered by a wide range of retailers are the perfect way
to please.
Give a Christmas
gift to remember!

never been a better excuse to take

BMW X6 challenges design rules
CAR MAKERS are always
looking for a point of difference
in their designs.
A good example of that is
BMW’s X6 sport utility vehicle.
Well such is its style it doesn’t really
fit the SUV mould, its coupetype
rear quarter tapers markedly
to provide a fast-back look, one
which is distinctive and eyecatching.
If you add in genuine
bulk – the X6 is big – then you
have a bold, brash SUV that has a
polarising style.
Most of the people who I talked
about it liked it, but then there
were others who said it was a bit
over the top and unnecessarily
complicated as a design, especially
up front where an angular,
illuminated grille commands
attention.
The X6 has always been
controversial, when it was first
launched it had only four seats
which seemed a bit of a waste in
such a big car. However, BMW
has addressed that, it has been a
five-seater for several years now.
The X6 lands here with three
engine options; well, two are pretty
much the same design, a 3-litre
six-cylinder diesel with two different
power outputs, but for those
who like to stick with a high-performance
petrol engine, the M50i
is V8-powered. All have BMW’s
xDrive four-wheel-drive system.
The two diesels have nomenclatures
of 30d and 50d respectively.
This evaluation surrounds the
entry-level model which lists at
$149,400, the 50d and M50i are
both priced at $187,100.
Given its stature, the X6 has a
plush, spacious interior, and for
those onboard you are cocooned
in the lap of luxury, and there is
an abundance of trim details that
will provide a pleasurable travelling
experience for all occupants.
The driver also gets a wealth of
functions and controls, many of
which are voice activated while,
of course, the X6 has the benefit
of a multitude of safety systems
incorporated into the vehicle.
Up front sits the big diesel, it
has massive power outputs even
in what is considered low-power
form. BMW claims 195kW and
620Nm, if that is not enough
grunt for you the 50d adds 99kW
and 140Nm. For me, though, the
30d has enough to satisfy. Power
is sufficient enough to claim a
6.5sec time to reach 100km/h.
That’s not bad for a tubby vehicle
which weighs just over twotonne.
The engine is strong and wilful,
it is grunty under load and in a
subdued way it lets you know it is
enjoying its work. It throbs away
and is free-revving in its nature,
hauling to the 5000rpm redline
willingly, and that is unusual for
a big diesel. Not that there is any
real need to explore high revolutions,
diesels of this type have
mammoth mid-range torque, and
for that matter, the X6 is an absolute
dynamo during a highway
overtake. Such is the acceleration
BMW X6 30d: Sports sedan feel with notable power/handling balance.
you need to keep a close watch on
the speedometer, the X6 charges
to dizzy speeds with little effort
and little sensation of speed.
It also seems unfathomable
that you can have this huge
charge of energy from under the
bonnet and still achieve remarkable
fuel usage economy. BMW
also claims a 7.1-litre per 100km
combined cycle average. On my
long highway run the readout was
listing a 5.2l/100km instantaneous
figure at 100km, the engine
almost idling at just 1350rpm.
That contributed to an overall
9l/100km figure when I had finished
evaluating.
Overall, that’s perfectly acceptable,
and figures that will continually
surprise the X6 buyer, you
can have huge impetus without
needlessly scoffing fuel.
The engine drives to all four
corners through an eight-speed

automatic transmission. It is a
sequential shifting type with
paddles attached to the steering
wheel should the driver desire
to take control of the gearshift
process. Left to its own devices
the gearbox works the torque pattern
of the engine well, upshifting
early to minimise fuel usage.
Perhaps the biggest surprise
of all with the X6 is that of its
ELEGANT: Coupe-type rear quarter characterises the BMW X6. An elegant and plush interior pampers the occupants.
handling. I’ve mentioned it is a
big car and you’d expect there
to be limitations when twisty
backroads are encountered. That’s
far from the reality, the X6 belies
its bulk, it feels tightly connected
with the road and it is remarkably
agile. A lot of that can be attributed
to the massive 22in Continental
tyres which have amazing
sidewall flexibility along with
unyielding grip.
Steerage is informative and
the entire vehicle is balanced
over the suspension. Of course,
you are paying a premium price
for the X6 and you’d expect all
the ducks to be in row, but the
power/handling balance of the
X6 is something quite extraordinary,
it feels like a sports sedan,
it is something quite special
when the never ending mixture
of New Zealand’s road types are
presented.
The X6 is a complicated car to
describe. For one it is the quintessential
family wagon, it is also a
recreational model which would
be at home on the Mt Hutt skifield
access road, and it is a performance
SUV that is very wilful
with its high power outputs.
For my money the ‘baby’ of the
series would win out. As much
as I like big V8 petrol engines,
the 3-litre diesel charms with its
honesty and economy; however,
deciding between the 30d
and 50d is another conundrum
altogether.
From family cars to work trucks and
supercars to fixer-uppers.
