Message from the Principal<br />
At Marian College, as 2<strong>02</strong>0 draws to a<br />
close, we celebrate our students who have<br />
all persevered during this challenging year.<br />
This year began with excitement for the Year<br />
9 students starting high school and we all<br />
looked forward to the busy calendar of events,<br />
making new friendships and taking on new<br />
learning. No-one could have anticipated a<br />
global pandemic, but our students coped<br />
with the changes required with courage and<br />
commitment. As a Catholic Special Character<br />
school, our Gospel and school values have<br />
stood us in good stead in 2<strong>02</strong>0.<br />
We are proud of our staff who worked hard<br />
to provide home learning during lockdown,<br />
quickly adapting to full online teaching<br />
practices and keeping in close contact with our<br />
students. They were committed to maintaining<br />
every opportunity for progress and success.<br />
We are equally proud of our students who<br />
also had to adjust to a new way of working<br />
and managed very well. On their return<br />
to school, they had a renewed respect for<br />
the relationships in our school-both with<br />
friends and with their teachers. Our sports<br />
and cultural teams quickly picked up their<br />
competitive spirit on our return back to school<br />
and were involved in summer and winter<br />
events ranging from Theatre sports to korfball.<br />
We were also fortunate to be able to celebrate<br />
our Marian College Feast Day – a wonderful,<br />
long-standing tradition.<br />
Thank you to our families for their support<br />
during this year, we have<br />
valued working with you.<br />

school, we appreciate<br />
working together for the<br />
benefit of the students.<br />
We look forward to an exciting year in<br />
2<strong>02</strong>1, as the design and plans for our new<br />
school will be finalised and work begins on<br />
building, ready for our opening in 2<strong>02</strong>3 at the<br />
new site in Papanui. We anticipate sharing<br />
the innovative design with our community at<br />
the start of the school year.<br />

Prizewinners<br />
Our Senior prize-giving and Colours assemblies celebrated<br />
a wide range of success including service to the community.<br />
Congratulations to our Dux of the College, Lucy Naylor and<br />
Proxime Accessit, Tyler Stewart and the many other students<br />
who were acknowledged.<br />

Cultural Success<br />
At the recent sPACIFICally Pacific Awards, our Head Girl, Lasela<br />
Sumner, and Deputy Head Girl Mailena Fasi-Fidow were recognised<br />
for their leadership and service to Marian College. Esther Tiatia-Latu<br />
also won a Memea Leadership award and scholarship to ARA.<br />

Kapa Haka<br />
The Marian Kapa Haka stood for the first time at the Tūhono Festival,<br />
performing a Waiata Tira, Waiata-a ringa and a women’s haka. They<br />
were stunning and made their families and the school proud. The<br />
group is tutored by past pupil Maia Viliamu.
