Marina closure on the cards<br />

BOATS MAY no longer be able<br />
to berth at Magazine <strong>Bay</strong> Marina,<br />
but Lyttelton teenagers could still<br />
be allowed to jump off it for years<br />
to come.<br />

the marina once existing licences<br />
expire or are<br />
terminated. A<br />
date for a final<br />

is still yet to be<br />
set.<br />

closure of the<br />
marina had been recommended<br />
as it was no longer fit for purpose<br />
and becoming “quite dangerous.”<br />
“If the council kept it open it<br />
would become quite expensive to<br />
fix,” she said.<br />
However, the board is hoping<br />
for at least one section of the<br />
marina to remain open for recreational<br />
purposes.<br />
“In the long run we are wanting<br />
to keep one arm of the marina<br />
open so children can jump off it.<br />
Children in the area really like to<br />
jump off the end of it, that is apparently<br />
what Lyttelton teenagers<br />
have done for many, many years.”<br />
While recreational activities<br />
such as jumping off the structure<br />
and also fishing are hoped to<br />
continue at the site, berthing is<br />
no longer seen as viable over the<br />
long-term.<br />
Peden said the majority of<br />
boaties had already shifted from<br />
Magazine <strong>Bay</strong> to Te Ana Marina<br />
in Lyttelton.<br />
“Most of them have already<br />
gone to Te Ana Marina, the<br />
council are just working with<br />
those still left at Magazine <strong>Bay</strong>,<br />
there are not many of them, to<br />
find the best solution.”<br />
The Magazine <strong>Bay</strong> Marina was<br />
devastated in a brutal storm in<br />
the year 2000. The marina disintegrated<br />
and 32 vessels berthed<br />
at it sunk after being struck by<br />
130km/h winds.<br />
The storm left 52 remnant piles<br />
in its wake which remained at the<br />
marina until they were removed<br />
by the city council last year.<br />

<strong>Bay</strong> Marina as it is no longer<br />
seen fit for purpose. A lot of<br />
boaties have now moved on<br />
to Lyttelton’s Te Ana Marina<br />
mooring facility (below).<br />

yoga pose<br />
of the month<br />
Aeroplane Pose<br />
Aeroplane strengthens your feet, legs, buttocks,<br />
abdomen and back while stretching the back<br />
of your standing leg. It improves balance and<br />
proprioception. It also encourages you to be<br />
confident and courageous as you reach your<br />
chest out in front of your standing foot.<br />
• Stand upright with your feet together, your arms<br />
by your side and your palms turned forwards.<br />
• Centre yourself on your left foot. Ground the<br />
centre of your left heel and the big toe and<br />
inner ball of your left foot firmly into the floor.<br />
• Do not over extend your left knee. Allow there<br />
to be a slight bend at your left knee but make<br />
your left thigh firm. Contract your left thigh<br />
muscles from skin, to muscle, to bone.<br />
• Turn your right thigh inwards a little and<br />
sustain that action throughout the pose.<br />
• Draw inwards and upwards at your belly to<br />
engage your abdominal muscles.<br />
• Reach your right leg straight back behind<br />
you and tilt your torso forwards. Lift your<br />
right leg up to hip height.<br />
• Turn the toes of your right foot straight down<br />
towards the floor, swivel your left hip out<br />
towards the left side slightly and turn your<br />
right hip down to be level with your left hip.<br />
• Draw your shoulder blades towards your spine<br />
and down your back towards your hips. Expand<br />
your chest and reach your chest forward.<br />
• Extend your arms strongly backward alongside<br />
your body towards the back of the room with<br />
the palms of your hands facing the floor.<br />
• Rest your gaze at the floor in front of you. Take<br />
five long, calm breaths before returning to<br />
standing then repeating on the opposite leg<br />
Everything that is disengaged will collapse towards the floor. Contract your muscles to their bones<br />
and create lift and lightness. Soar over the mundane cares of your day and free your mind.<br />
