Marina closure on the cards
• By Louis Day
Tori Peden
BOATS MAY no longer be able
to berth at Magazine Bay Marina,
but Lyttelton teenagers could still
be allowed to jump off it for years
to come.
The Banks Peninsula Community
Board has requested the city
council approve the closure of
the marina once existing licences
expire or are
terminated. A
date for a final
council decision
is still yet to be
set.
Community
board chairwoman
Tori
Peden said
closure of the
marina had been recommended
as it was no longer fit for purpose
and becoming “quite dangerous.”
“If the council kept it open it
would become quite expensive to
fix,” she said.
However, the board is hoping
for at least one section of the
marina to remain open for recreational
purposes.
“In the long run we are wanting
to keep one arm of the marina
open so children can jump off it.
Children in the area really like to
jump off the end of it, that is apparently
what Lyttelton teenagers
have done for many, many years.”
While recreational activities
such as jumping off the structure
and also fishing are hoped to
continue at the site, berthing is
no longer seen as viable over the
long-term.
Peden said the majority of
boaties had already shifted from
Magazine Bay to Te Ana Marina
in Lyttelton.
“Most of them have already
gone to Te Ana Marina, the
council are just working with
those still left at Magazine Bay,
there are not many of them, to
find the best solution.”
The Magazine Bay Marina was
devastated in a brutal storm in
the year 2000. The marina disintegrated
and 32 vessels berthed
at it sunk after being struck by
130km/h winds.
The storm left 52 remnant piles
in its wake which remained at the
marina until they were removed
by the city council last year.
CHANGE OF SCENERY: The
Banks Peninsula Community
Board has recommended
the closure of the Magazine
Bay Marina as it is no longer
seen fit for purpose. A lot of
boaties have now moved on
to Lyttelton’s Te Ana Marina
mooring facility (below).
Many people find Apollo’s Power Vinyasa practice to be effective in
relieving and preventing back pain and tension-related types of pain
yoga pose
of the month
Aeroplane Pose
Aeroplane strengthens your feet, legs, buttocks,
abdomen and back while stretching the back
of your standing leg. It improves balance and
proprioception. It also encourages you to be
confident and courageous as you reach your
chest out in front of your standing foot.
• Stand upright with your feet together, your arms
by your side and your palms turned forwards.
• Centre yourself on your left foot. Ground the
centre of your left heel and the big toe and
inner ball of your left foot firmly into the floor.
• Do not over extend your left knee. Allow there
to be a slight bend at your left knee but make
your left thigh firm. Contract your left thigh
muscles from skin, to muscle, to bone.
• Turn your right thigh inwards a little and
sustain that action throughout the pose.
• Draw inwards and upwards at your belly to
engage your abdominal muscles.
• Reach your right leg straight back behind
you and tilt your torso forwards. Lift your
right leg up to hip height.
• Turn the toes of your right foot straight down
towards the floor, swivel your left hip out
towards the left side slightly and turn your
right hip down to be level with your left hip.
• Draw your shoulder blades towards your spine
and down your back towards your hips. Expand
your chest and reach your chest forward.
• Extend your arms strongly backward alongside
your body towards the back of the room with
the palms of your hands facing the floor.
• Rest your gaze at the floor in front of you. Take
five long, calm breaths before returning to
standing then repeating on the opposite leg
Everything that is disengaged will collapse towards the floor. Contract your muscles to their bones
and create lift and lightness. Soar over the mundane cares of your day and free your mind.
