WINTER 2020 | 33BY DANIEL KANEThousands of cars drive bythe Kelly Jeep dealershipon Route 1 in Lynnfieldeveryday, but the lot isn'tjust filled with new cars.Almost hidden in the back is a parkingspot only big enough for several cars ata time, spaces for those heading into thelong-abandoned Kallenberg Quarry.Lynnfield nature enthusiasts maythink of other spots when they wantto get away for a hike or a walk, butKallenberg, also known as Bow RidgeReservation, is a backyard spot goodenough to scratch the itch.The reservation is certainly no secretto local mountain bikers. The rocky trailslining the woods have been known assome of the best around, including someinteresting names like "Awesome Sauce,""Chicken Soup" and "Wicked HardTrail."Filled with blocks of granite, onceharvested to construct buildings in thesurrounding area, the vast woods is alsohome to the town's highest point in a30-foot tall mound of rock.That point is remarkable for adifferent reason as well and you'll knowit when you see it. The rock is tiered withworn-down graffiti depicting blue, greenand red skulls. Fittingly named SkullRock, the graffiti has been there for morealmost two decades and while it's beenthe victim of some unwelcome additionsin the form of spray-paint over the years,it's become an unofficial monument forhikers.On the other side of the rock, theartist responsible for the macabre muralcalls his or herself Ichabod — althoughthe signature has been covered withspray paint over the years.
