As a sport, rowing provides those who compete a unique opportunity to
engage in a discipline unparalleled by most. Perseverance, resilience and
a rich culture of community are but a few of the many benefits offered to
those involved in the sport.
At St Thomas of Canterbury College, the students
are encouraged to involve themselves in the
rowing programme, which provides similar
notions of dedication and determination, built
upon the foundation of brotherhood, which
is informed by the special character of the
College. Our young men are inspired by both the
collective history of the sport as well as a shared
sense of commitment to each other. Rowing
at school-age level promotes effective time
management skills and has a notable effect on
academic achievement, as students become more
productive with their time. Most of the students
cite these benefits themselves as the reason
for their continuing service the sport, while also
noting a real sense of personal growth achieved
as a result.
This season the College boasts its biggest squad
in its 15-year history, with 32 boys committing
themselves to the programme. Although small
in comparison to other programmes, St Thomas
Rowing makes up for it in its approach to inclusive
practice and preservation of culture, so as to
insure a richer experience. The programme
continues to benefit from the Old Boys’ Network,
with a large contingent of former St Thomas
rowers making up the coaching team, while the
Selwyn River remains the Squad’s base. The boys
continue to compete at regattas on Lake Hood
(Ashburton) and Lake Ruataniwha (Twizel) with
high expectations set for the year ahead. The
squad is looking forward to getting a full season
of racing under their belts with the hope of it
culminating at the Maadi Cup at Karapiro in the
new year.
