On course for 30 years as golf buddies • By Matt Slaughter SYLVIA WILSON and her nine friends celebrated their combined age of 872 years and about 30 years of friendship last week. Sylvia, who is 80, said they met about 30 years ago at Waimairi Beach Golf Club, where they used to play golf. She, Ruth Lawson, Moira Curtin, Shirley Smith, Neroli Paterson, Margaret Underhay, Leoni Bolton, Margaret Paterson and Jean Norton have been friends ever since. On Friday, the friends, who all live in the eastern suburbs, celebrated their friendship and combined age with a cake at the golf club. Joan Moore has also been a part of the group but could not attend the celebration, Sylvia said. In spite of none of them playing golf anymore, four of them including Sylvia still play indoor bowls at North New Brighton Indoor Bowls Club. She said they meet a couple of times a year at the golf club to catch up. “It’s just something that we’ve done, basically, since we gave it [golf] up. We still keep in touch and four of us still play indoor bowls,” Sylvia said. Sylvia said the group played COMPANIONSHIP: Ruth Lawson, Sylvia Wilson, Moira Curtin, Shirley Smith, Neroli Paterson, Margaret Underhay, Leoni Bolton, Margaret Paterson and Jean Norton celebrated about 30 years of friendship and their combined age of 872 at Waimairi Beach Golf Club on Friday. Sylvia said another special thing about the friend group is they all still live independently. “Everyone is still living by themselves, seven of them are still driving and one of them has just given up, one of the 92-year-olds, and she’s got a wee motorised [mobility] scooter.” She said “keeping in touch with people and just taking an interest in things” has been part of her secret to staying healthy for all of these years. Sylvia said all of the friends come from different backgrounds making them great company. “They’re just an interesting lot and, you know, old friends are good friends, they really are. “It’s just lovely that there are people there that you can relate to,” she said. www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org.nz
