Taking and making, thanks to creative librarians
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
A library is a place overflowing with
imagination. While that imagination is easily
found in the contents of the bookshelves
or in the children’s play area, it can also be
found in the minds of those seated behind
the help desk.
There was a time when some patrons
might have dismissed library staff as having
little creativity other than in inventing new
ways to tell people to be quiet.
It was a perception, say librarians
throughout Madison County, that was and
is not at all true-to-life.
“I would say we are very creative,” said
Amanda Warner, a public services librarian
at Plain City Public Library, with a laugh.
“Obviously, some are more creative than
others, but we all make an attempt to showcase
our skills.”
A strange thing has been happening
within the past decade or so at the library,
or at least strange to those who once believed
librarians to be the non-creative type:
Libraries have become a destination for (From left) Lucas, Gabe, and Nick Bertin display their do-it-yourself
“Our library is usually a pretty hopping as the library staff has reassessed operations during the pandemic.
“We knew we would have to scale down our in-person programming,
but we knew we still wanted to offer programming for our pa-
In a typical year, Plain City Public Library
offers a slew of crafting programs trons,” Warner said.
aimed at engaging curious minds of all ages, Like many libraries, Plain City Public Library has been offering
but their target demographic is the younger storytime via Facebook since March. They started to offer crafting
set.
and creating programs called “Take-and-Make” in the summer.
“While we do have programming that “They have been a big hit with the community,” Warner said “While there is a video component to the Take-and-Make kits we
will interest the young adult or adult, we try about the Take-and-Make projects. “I think, especially as the year offer, it is not mandatory that they watch, especially if it is not totally
tech-related crafting activities.”
family would be able to enjoy together,” so many children studying from home, there is a lot of screen fatigue Among Plain City Library’s Take-and-Make kits have been a doit-yourself
First case of MIS-C reported in Madison County
The first case of Multisystem Inflammatory
Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) has
been reported in Madison County. The patient
is a 14-year-old Madison County resident
who is at home recovering after a
hospital stay. Identified earlier this year,
MIS-C is a syndrome where different body
parts become inflamed, including the heart,
lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal
organs.
Madison County Health Commissioner
Chris Cook explained that the syndrome is
directly connected to COVID-19.
“We know that 99 percent of the kids who
have been diagnosed with MIS-C tested positive
for COVID-19. The other 1 percent had
close contact with a confirmed case of
COVID-19,” he said.
MIS-C is a very serious condition that
typically results in hospitalization. Most
children who are diagnosed with MIS-C improve
with targeted and specialized medical
care, but the long-term effects are unknown.
Cook said that it is important to realize
that MIS-C is a syndrome that develops in
response to a COVID-19 infection.
“MIS-C itself is not something that can
be passed from person to person. But the
virus that sickens us with COVID-19 can
then cause MIS-C in kids. We know that
COVID-19 is easily passed from person to
person through inhaled respiratory droplets
and aerosols,” he noted.
Cook encouraged parents who have children
that test positive for COVID-19, or who
have been around a positive case, to monitor
them closely for rapid changes in their condition.
Parents should contact their doctor
immediately or seek emergency care if their
children begin showing symptoms of MIS-C,
which include fever, abdominal pain, vomiting,
diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot
eyes, or extreme tiredness.
Since mid-May, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified
1,288 cases of MIS-C in the United
States. Twenty-three of these children died.
Nearly all cases have been between the ages
of 1 and 14 with an average age of 8 years
old. A total of 37 cases of MIS-C have been
reported in Ohio since May.
Most children develop MIS-C in the two
to four weeks after they are infected with
COVID-19. Cook says research is ongoing to
try to determine why some children get
MIS-C and others do not.
“Right now, we don’t know if there are certain
existing health conditions that make
one person more likely to get MIS-C than
another,” he said. “Until we know that,
every single parent needs to be aware of
what to look for, and remember that
COVID-19 is serious at any age.”

HEALTHY
WOMEN
STAY YOUNG
Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library has been
offering take-and-make activities to both
adults and children. Participants pick up
kits curbside, then have fun getting creative
at home. In December, adults were invited
to decorate
wine bottles as
part of the “Glittering
Snow” takeand-make
project.
Each project kit included
a wine bottle,
glittering foam
snow, a cork with a
light attached, a
pipe cleaner, and
pages with fun
Christmas trivia
and a fudge recipe.
Library patrons
Dana Bartoe and
Kelcey Moore decorated
the bottles
shown here.
“I can move better and sleep better. I am in
a much better mood. I can do more with my
family and I’m actually looking forward to
the summer so I can work in my yard. I’m
looking forward to retirement now!” R.H.
“I came up with that one,” Warner said proudly about a kit that
taught participants how to make a small gnome using ankle socks,
craft pellets, fabric, faux fur, and a single wood bead.
Warner said a crystal yeti science and craft program is slated
for January, and a hologram program is slated for February. As
with the previous programs, the library will supply the materials
but patrons are asked to call and register if they are interested.
While the Take-and-Make kits are not a substitute for in-person
programming, the library staff is still excited to offer programs that
tap into people’s creative sides, Warner said. She added that when
the library is able to offer in-person programming, the staff will
continue to modify programs for anyone who might not be able to
attend.
“I think we will continue to post storytime stories for those who
are unable to attend when it is happening, and I think we will continue
to offer Take-and-Make kits in some capacity,” she said. “We
have received a lot of positive feedback about the flexibility these
virtual activities and take-home activities provide, and we want to
continue to build upon that.”
Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library in West Jefferson is another library
in the county that has been offering Take-and-Make kits.
According to Melissa Woodard, technology and services outreach
coordinator, the library has been offering the kits to the patrons
free of charge since the summer.
“Like a lot of libraries, we had to reassess what our programming
would look like, or even whether we could offer programming
given our limited services,” she said regarding limitations due to
the pandemic. “It was fortunate that we were able to continue with
our programming in some capacity because both our staff and our
patrons love the level of engagement we have with each other.”
Once a month, the library offers creating and crafting activities
for children, young adults, and families interested in STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education,
and for adults.
The activities for younger children involve a lot of glue and construction
paper, while the activities for young adults involve a more
intricate, hands-on, tech-based approach with a variety of materials.
The adult activities typically involve fun with wine glasses—
empty ones, of course.
“We are able to purchase materials, including empty wine bottles,
in bulk,” Woodard said.
Examples of the activities Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library has
offered this year include a dancing corn experiment using baking
soda and vinegar, employing the use of Mason jars to make aquariums,
and using wine bottles to create glittering snowscapes with
lights.
Like the staff at Plain City Public Library, the staff at Hurt-Battelle
Memorial Library come up with the ideas—some have been
adapted from Pinterest—then engage in a vigorous trial-and-error
process to determine which materials are needed and the activity’s
level of difficulty.
“We want (patrons) to be engaged with our programming, not
frustrated by it,” said Woodard, adding that most of the activities
can be found on the library’s website, Facebook page, or on
YouTube.
The library intends to continue to offer Take-and-Make activities
for its patrons into 2021. On the agenda are ice lanterns and winter
wreaths in January and dream catchers in February. Most activities
require registration due to limited supplies.
Woodard said this year has been challenging in a multitude of
ways, but she and her fellow staffers are thankful. Not only have
they been able to offer creative programs to the public, the public
has shown how much they care about the library in return.
“I think they really appreciate that we are trying as best as we
can to continue to provide them a creative outlet through our programming,”
she said.
$10 million project provides workforce housing
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Messenger
It didn’t take long for a new apartment
complex in London to reach full occupancy.
Daines Village Apartments, located off of
Keny Boulevard near the London
City Schools campus,
opened this fall. The community
is comprised of 48 units
across eight buildings. The
units include five one-bedroom,
21 two-bedroom, and 22
three-bedroom apartments.
Rent prices for the two-bedroom
units range from $500 to
$950; prices for the three-bedroom
units range from $600 to
$1,050.
Wallick Communities, Ohio’s largest
owner-operator of affordable housing, built
the $10 million complex to meet two needs
in London and Madison County—workforce
“Being able to
bring in workforce
housing is giving
some of our citizens
the opportunity to
have their own residency.”
housing and the reduction of infant mortality
in the county.
Stephanie Tresso, a spokesperson for the
company, describes workforce housing as
housing that allows workers to live comfortably
and close to their places of employment.
Such housing often is
located in areas with booming
employment opportunities.
“The city of London was
very interested in workforce
housing because its housing
and apartment stock is rather
low, and people are traveling
from far away to get to work,
which creates high employee
turnover,” Tresso said.
“Wallick Communities has
been a pleasure to work with,” said London
Mayor Patrick Closser. “Being able to bring
in workforce housing is giving some of our
citizens the opportunity to have their own
residency. London is growing and with that
Pat Closser, mayor
City of London
we need to make sure we have enough
rooftops for the growth.”
David Kell, executive director of the
Madison County Chamber of Commerce,
said Daines Village is a welcome addition to
the county’s housing stock.
“We have a good number of housing options
on the higher end, but there needs to
be other options so everybody can have a
shot at living in the county,” he said. “We
felt it was a good project, and it helped to
bring more interest in the community from
a housing perspective.”
In addition to offering workforce housing
with the Daines Village project, Wallick
Communities has forged a three-year partnership
with Madison Health to provide onsite
programming for apartment residents
and the community at large geared toward
reducing the county’s infant mortality rate.
Programming has not yet started due to the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Other project supporters included the
city of London, Madison County Chamber of
Commerce, and other local employers.
Daines Village Apartments is located at
1143 Daines Ct., London. The complex includes
an on-site laundry facility, fitness
center, business center, kitchenette in the
community building, and a playground.
The Wallick Communities corporate offices
are located in New Albany. The company
serves the affordable housing and
senior living markets and operates five
business divisions: development, construction,
asset management, affordable housing
operations, and senior living operations.
The company currently manages 180 affordable
Jason Hunt, head coach of the Madison-
Plains High School varsity football team,
announced on Dec. 17 that senior Paul
Bryant is a 2020 recipient of the Burlsworth
Character Award.
The award honors players who may or
may not be top athletic performers but who
give 100 percent on the field and stand as
moral examples to their teams.
The award is named after Brandon
Burlsworth who was a walk-on player at the
University of Arkansas in 1994. Through his
work ethic and determination, he not only
earned a scholarship but also was named
team captain, all-SEC in 1997-98, and firstteam
all-American in 1998. He was the university’s
first all-American in a decade.
Burlsworth also excelled in the classroom.
He was named to the all-SEC Academic
Honor Roll 1995-1998 and was the
first football player in the university’s history
to earn a master’s degree before playing
his last game. The Indianapolis Colts selected
him as the 63rd overall pick in the
1999 National Football League draft. After
minicamp, his coaches projected him to start
as a rookie.
Tragically, Burlsworth was killed in a
head-on automobile collision 11 days after
the draft. The University of Arkansas created
an endowment in his name. Each year,
the school awards 18 $5,000 academic scholarships
and one $10,000 walk-on athletic
Paul Bryant
scholarship to upperclassmen at the university
who exemplify Burlsworth’s qualities.
The Brandon Burlsworth Foundation engages
in various charitable endeavors, including
providing free eye care to thousands
of underprivileged children. In, 2010, the
Burlsworth Trophy was created to honor the
achievements of the walk-on athlete. Each
Rick Palsgrove
The holidays bring us Christmas movies, television specials,
stage plays, and concerts in which to joyfully embrace the season.
But there is another medium where we can enjoy the stuff of Christmas:
books.
Two of the best for Christmas reading
are 19th century classics: “A Christmas
Carol” by Charles Dickens (published in
1843); and “The Sketch Book” by Washington
Irving (published in 1820).
Everyone is familiar with Dickens’s tale
of the miser Ebenezer Scrooge who undergoes
a spiritual transformation of redemption.
The story is so timeless that it has
been produced and parodied in many forms.
Most people are probably familiar with the
story through the many films and stage
plays based on the book. The worst of these
are musicals with hokey songs that take
away from the narrative. The best are the
serious films that try to adhere closely to
Dickens’s work.
But to get the true resonance of the story,
one can read Dickens’s written words as
they appear on the pages of the original
book. It’s a delightful and transforming experience.
I recommend obtaining a copy of the book
that includes the original illustrations, especially
one with the drawing of Marley’s
Ghost visiting Scrooge.
Dickens wrote in an accessible, direct
style with a flair for dialogue and a talent
for description. Here is an example of Dickens
deftly blending humor and horror:
Scrooge is alone in his dark, cold house
eating his miserable gruel, when the ghost
of his old partner, Jacob Marley, makes a
spooky and frighteningly grand appearance
before him.
There’s a give-and-take conversation between
the two as the scared, yet doubting,
Scrooge tries to figure out the apparition before
him and why it is there.
Marley’s Ghost loses patience with this
and in his ghostly annoyed way asks
Scrooge, “Why do you doubt your senses?”
Scrooge falls back on intellectual reasoning,
telling Marley’s Ghost, “Because a little
thing affects them. A slight disorder of the
stomach makes them cheats. You may be an
undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a
crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone
potato.”
In spite of being terrified, Scrooge summons
up enough meanness, courage and wit
to say to Marley’s Ghost, “There’s more of
gravy than of grave about you...”
Not only is Scrooge’s joke funny, but the
timing is impeccable as it comes at a tense
moment when the reader is least expecting
humor. The joke is unleashed just as the
ghost is riding high on its initial shock value
of appearing in the room. Dickens uses
humor as an equalizer.
It’s a good joke, too. It has the fun word
play of “gravy” and “grave,” plus it is insulting
to Marley’s Ghost. Insult humor when
used against what appears to be a more
See BOOKS page 13

powerful entity is a wonderfully subversive thing. Scrooge’s joke
seeks to put Marley’s Ghost in his cosmic place.
However, the joke infuriates Marley’s Ghost because, even
though he’s other worldly, there’s still enough human essence in
him to dislike being the butt of a joke.
100th win
Reece Chapman (right), a senior at Jonathan Alder High
School, won his 100th wrestling match on Dec. 17 at Jonathan
Alder High School against Tecumseh.
Wrote Dickens, “...the spirit raised a
frightful cry and shook his chain with such
dismal and appalling noise...” The apparition
then terrorizingly bellows in response,
“Man of the worldly mind do you believe in
me or not?’
It’s a fearsome outburst that reasserts
ghostly control of the situation and cows
Scrooge, which is the beginning of the old
miser’s journey along a path of redemption.
Pick up a copy of the book and let Dickens’s
words transport you through time,
space and dimension.
Washington Irving’s, “The Sketch Book,”
is a collection of short stories, most notably
“Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow.” However the book also includes
four Christmas stories: “Christmas,”
“Christmas Eve,” “Christmas Day” and “The
Christmas Dinner.”
With these stories, one can travel back in
time with the written word and experience
timeless Christmas traditions, some of
which we still embrace today because Irving
set up the basis for them.
The stories exude warmth as they extoll
upon the decorations, feasting, the customs,
games, spirit and communal nature of the
season.
Irving also gets a bit nostalgic, just like
we do today, noting that some treasured traditions
of Christmas in the early 19th century
that he loved had already begun to fade
and were being replaced by ones he considered
Reading his tales of the ancient holiday
places one at a country squire’s overflowing
as well as imagining oneself happily
STRYKER
Caroline (Cally) Anne Stryker, at the
young age of 68, passed away on Dec. 15,
2020, at Mount Carmel Hospital in Grove
City, Ohio. She was born on Feb. 27, 1952,
in Biloxi, Miss., to Chief Master Sergeant
James P Hinton U.S. Air Force (deceased)
and Mary (Plummer) Hinton.
She married Kent E. Stryker on Aug. 21,
1971, at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville,
Ill. They have two sons, Todd and Corey,
and four grandchildren, Jacob, Cameron,
Addie, and Josaphine. She was preceded in
death by two of her brothers, James Hinton
and Patrick Hinton. Brothers still alive are
Mark Hinton and Shawn Hinton. She graduated
from Mascoutah Community High
School in Mascoutah, Ill.
She was a strong, caring, independent
woman, and it showed to everyone who
knew her. She held many jobs over the span
of her life, including event planner at Ohio
Bell, Madison County Corrections officer,
and Jefferson Local Schools as EMIS funding
coordinator and part-time bus driver.
She was passionate about photography
which she shared from the weddings and
other special occasions she captured
through the years. To her family and
www.madisonmessengernews.com
friends, she held many roles in our lives—a
devoted loving wife, grandmother, mother,
aunt, sister, daughter, and friend to everyone
she knew and loved. She was always
willing to give others the shirt off her back
to make them happy. She was kind, compassionate,
and always a great listener. She
would always tell you what she thought—
whether it be good, bad, indifferent—just a
straight shooter and sometimes brutally
honest to everyone. When things looked
grim, she would always say, “This too shall
pass, and it will be OK,” and with a big hug
and a kiss, life would be better. That is a
power only a mother’s love has.
She loved to cook and through that she
learned to make many people smile. When
she prepared meals, she always made
enough to feed anyone that walked through
the door or sometimes a small army! She
knew many techniques to baking the best
desserts, and she always shared her passion
with everyone she loved.
She was musically talented and found
peace in playing her guitar and singing either
alone, in her band, or for anyone that
would enjoy the show. She played in a band
called the Jammers for the United Senior
Services of Clark County for several years.
If you were lucky enough to see her perform,
you could see how happy it made her.
She also loved many other hobbies, including
crocheting, knitting, and sewing.
She would always have someone in mind to
receive her heart-felt creations. She was a
collector of all things useful or not, but she
always had what you needed or desired. She
loved to shop and was always looking for
her next greatest deal or bargain. She was
a true treasure hunter who will be forever
missed. She was an avid reader. Some of
her favorites were the Harry Potter series,
Steven King, Game of Thrones, and cookbooks.
The loving memories we shared in the
preceding lines were just a few that made
her one of the greatest, loved grandmas in
the world. To formally say goodbye, or as
she would say, “It’s time to hit the happy
trail.”
A memorial service for family and
friends will take place on Jan. 9 from noon
to 4 p.m. at American Legion Post 201 in
West Jefferson.
peacefully on Dec. 16, 2020, at The Ohio State University
Wexner Medical Center. Born Barbara Ann Heffley
on July 8, 1944, in Mount Sterling, Ohio, she was the
young girl, Barbara and her family lived outside of the
close to her classmates throughout her life, organizing
every reunion and even birthday celebrations
stars to emcee the talent show at Fairfield, and being
“the strict teacher at the top of the stairs” until they got
to know her. Even after retirement, she continued subbing
“He was a great guy. He knew
the community. He was always willing
to help somebody and always
willing to make sure the roads were
cleared,” said Kathy Endres, who
became Pleasant Township’s fiscal
officer in 2010, the same year Neff
became a township trustee. “I can’t
say enough about him. He was always
Neff’s dedication to the community
also included many years as a
volunteer fire fighter, member of the
Tri-County Joint Fire District Gary Neff
board, and member of the Sterling
Joint Ambulance District. He also was a veteran of the Ohio Army
National Guard.
The Pleasant Township trustees have until mid-January to appoint
someone to fill Neff’s seat on the board. The appointee will
serve out the remainder of the term which ends on Dec. 31, 2021.
Anyone interested in filling the position is asked to contact Sam
Junk, board chairman, at (740) 572-1893.
Charlotte Louise Topping Hickman was born October 12, 1935
in a little house that was formerly a schoolhouse off France Lane in Ross County,
Ohio. She passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at the Bluebird Retirement
Community in London, Ohio after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Charlotte, called “Char” and “Mom/ Grandma” by her family and friends, was preceded
in death by her parents Herman J. and Lucille A. Topping, her brother Ronald Topping
and her sister Helen Topping Conkel. She is survived by her best friend and one love,
her husband Melvin M. Hickman; her daughters Julia Brakenbury (Kenneth), Cheryl
Taylor (Phil) and Gretchen Nelson (Brian); her grandchildren Christopher Brakenbury
(Peggy Anderson), and Adam Brakenbury (Olivia); her step grandchildren Meghen
Sanders and Chris Taylor (Jill); her great grandchildren June and Benjamin Brakenbury; her step great grandchildren
Adeline and Bryson Sanders, and Lois and Jack Taylor. Charlotte is also survived by one sister, Patricia
Britton.
She attended Ross County Schools and graduated from Southeastern High School in Richmond Dale, Ohio
on May 19, 1953. Her family remembers Charlotte telling them she liked school and was a great student but
hated gym class. This led her to keeping score at basketball games to earn her gym credits so that she could
graduate. Her first travel outside of Ohio was for a graduation trip with her senior class to Washington, D.C.
which started a lifetime of traveling and exploring with her family and in later years with her husband.
Charlotte’s first job immediately out of high school was as an administrative secretary to the superintendent
of Southeastern Local School District. This ultimately led to a career of working in similar roles for Manpower
Training Center and later for Jackson City Schools. She finished her career at Jackson High School.
She met her husband Melvin at a church picnic at Old Man’s Cave at Hocking Hills State Park. Melvin delighted
in telling people that “Charlotte caught him in her web and he never got out.” After marrying, they happily
built their lives around each other and after retirement often returned annually to Old Man’s Cave for dinner
on their anniversary.
While always working full time, Charlotte was an accomplished seamstress and made many of the clothes for
her daughters through the years. She was an awesome cook who also loved to bake (her sugar cookies were
the best), enjoyed crafts and decorating her home for holidays, supported her daughters’ school activities by
being a homeroom mother, band mom, school trip and band trip chaperon, and much more. She was an avid
reader who developed a notorious habit of reading the beginning and the end of books before deciding if
the book was good enough to read all the way through. Her community activities included membership at
Christ United Methodist Church where she was involved in women’s circle and taught Sunday School for years
when her daughters were small; was a member of Jackson Lioness Club and later Jackson Lions Club, and
Jackson Mothers Guild. She had the gift of wit and a spirited sense of humor and could pull pranks with the
best (a trait not always admired by her family!), yet was often quiet and unassuming in more public situations
which amazed her family.
After retirement, Charlotte struggled with health issues which led to her and Melvin leaving their much-loved
home at 210 Dawson Street in Jackson to move into assisted living at the Bluebird in London, Ohio. As it does
with so many, the disease took its toll. Charlotte, Char, Grandma will be greatly missed, and the world will be
a less warm and bright place without her. She will be forever in our hearts.
Her family wishes to thank our many friends who have supported us, as well as the staff of the Bluebird and
Miami Valley Hospice for their care of Charlotte. Private burial will be at Little Mound Cemetery in Richmond
Dale, Ohio. The family would appreciate condolences to be sent to Melvin Hickman, 2260 State Route 56
SW, The Bluebird/ Room 215, London, OH 43140.
Funeral arrangements are by the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home in Jackson.
