UNDER 20s RUGBY REVIEWAt U20s level the beginning of the seasoncan often be season defining with thequalifiers and new players and trying to getthe team to bed in together. With a newcoaching ticket on board with BrianMcGovern (Head Coach), Eddie Devitt(Backs Coach) and Peter Smyth (AssistantCoach), we returned to training in themiddle of July which got all the lads broughtinto the season objectives.The qualifiers system was changed lastminute and unfortunately in our twoqualifiers we came up just short. Straightafter we lost the qualifier our objective wasto go unbeaten in Prem 2.With trips to Galway and Athlone wemanaged to do that and in our last gameagainst Dublin University we managed towin the league.The team was captained by Sean Bourkewho led by example both on and off thepitch. Luke Mannion was a standout playerwho scored five try’s in one game, a regularnominee for man of the match. GeorgeHassett was also a standout, he played onboth prop and hooker during the season andeven scored try’s. Loris Nikolov whoreturned from long term injury and playedgreat during the season. We discoveredMichael McEvoy can not only play centre butalso wing and was a persistent performerthroughout the season. Craig Walshe whoalso returned from injury in the latter part ofthe season.As well as playing for 20s a special mentionshould go to those the kitted out for theU20’s captain Sean Bourke receiving the cupfrom our own Niall Rynnejunior teams in the club which was neededduring the season. Matthew Kennedy,Darragh Gibson, Craig Walshe, MichaelMcEvoy, Niall McDonnell, Donal McAuilffe,Michael Connell and all the others.As we now turn to look towards next season,we will have the same coaching andmanagement teams as this season. All theseplayers have great futures ahead of them at20s, firsts and junior rugby.Vincent MurrayThe victorious U20’s squad that won the league.27
