PAUL MICHAEL DEAN – ‘DEANO’:A ST. MARY’S GREATSchool YearsIn the 50s and 60s we had an outstandingand highly individual young man, JamesDean who fascinated the film world and in70s and 80s we had an outstanding youngrugby player and person, Paul Dean whofascinated and beguiled the rugby world. Before that of course he had to enter theworld, and that he did on a warm summer’sday in 1960 in Dublin. In 1967 as a seven yearold boy, he ventured down the road to StMary’s College at Rathmines, where heenjoyed his time and excelled for 11 years, leaving school in 1978. Sport was one of hisstrongest points and at rugby he sparkled. The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) wasfounded in 1875 and for its centenary in 1975,the first schoolboys’ international gameswere ventured upon. In both 1977 and 1978Paul was the Irish outhalf, where he was astar. In fact St Marys have produced superbouthalves over its history, particularly. SeanCooke, Tony Ward, Paul Dean, VinnieCunningham (centre/outhalf and currentpresident) and Jonathan Sexton. The latterfour being outstanding British and IrishLions)Paul Deaninjured his knee in Australia, cutting downhis involvement and effectively ending hisplaying career. That of course did not end hiscontribution to Irish rugby. His ClubsWhen Paul left school he came straight upthe St Mary’s College RFC, then recentlyrelocated from College Drive to TemplevilleRoad and was an instant success. Over theyears different top players have beeninclined to have some special point ofexcellence and although clearly Paul had abrilliant all round game, he was endowedwith magical hands. He enjoyed greatly his club rugby, all whosaw him did likewise, and as his gamedeveloped he progressed to Leinster, whichteam he captained and then in 1981 he wascapped for Ireland. He went on to play forIreland until 1989, gaining 32 caps. He waspart of the famous, Mick Doyle coached 1985Triple Crown winning team. Then he wasselected for the British and Irish Lions’ tourof Australia in 1989. Unfortunately, he37Meanwhile, his golfing acumen wasdeveloping. While many golfers develop anitch for the game, Paul developed to ascratch golfer. He is a member of Blainroeand Dun Laoghaire Golf Clubs He was captainof Blainroe GC in 1992. He is still a top classgolfer. He only needs those three clubs!Social and PersonalIt wasn’t all rugby and golf, he found time tomarry the most personable Lorraine, whohas also contributed generously to St Marysin many ways. And they both found time torear Holly, an HRC with PWC (sounds great);and Conor, who at 22 is, like his father, ahighly talented outhalf who already has beena very valuable dedicated St Marys player. He is currently on a professional developmentcontract with Connacht. He stays intouch with his club and it is hoped will in thefuture at some time play for Marys again.
