J1’S REVIEW – SEASON 2019-2020How to sum up the season that was? Ourteam was captained again this season by thevery popular and talented Matty Timmons,ably deputised by Andy Mooney and NiallMcNiff. From the off both Matty and ourhead coach Tom Lynch made it clear thatthe squads targets for the season werepromotion to Division 1, where we belong asMatty put it, and to win the League Final.Mission partially accomplished as promotionwas confirmed prior to the lockdown andthe final was reached however it wascancelled for obvious reasons.The squad this year greatly benefited froman injection of new players and the return ofsome familiar faces. Paul Brennan came in asbacks coach early on in the season andthroughout an exciting brand of attackingrugby was played as evidenced by 11 tryscoring bonus points being secured in only13 league games, our final game beingconceded by Clontarf. Our back three,usually including three of Alex Dix, MatthewOpperman, Tim Dolan, David Sloan andDavid Fanagan, no matter its composition,terrorised opposing teams throughout theseason and all who played there had theability to score tries from anywhere on thepitch, even those drafted in as make shiftwingers. Take a bow Ciaran O’Meara!A number of different centre combinationswere tried with Matthew Timmons andMatthew Talbot being the successfulcombination for the better part of theseason. Rumour has it that Paul B. selectedthem there as it was easier for him to giveinstructions if both centres answered to thesame name!For the same reason Ben Watson and BennHoey started more often than not at halfback! It was Ben’s first season playing withus and despite his young years he controlledgames excellently from 10 and wasinstrumental in the attacking rugby played.Ruairi Shields started for us at 10 too andalso excelled, notably away to Naas when henabbed a hat trick of tries.We were lucky to have 3 excellentscrumhalf’s vying for the starting position,Benn Hoey, who decided to return fromsemi-retirement and his game clearlybenefited from the pre-season warmweather training he undertook in Mexicoalong with Corky and Tally under thetutelage of Tom, Adam McEvoy, from the20s who was excellent whenever he playedfor us, and Conor Kavanagh, who missed aportion of the season due to illness butreported back in fine form.
