Polo event afundraiser<br />

The fast­paced sport of polo will be on<br />

display in Culverden thisweekend.<br />

The third South IslandWomen’s Polo<br />

Tournamentisbeingheld at the Amuri<br />

Polo Club grounds on School Road on<br />

Saturday, <strong>January</strong> 23, and Sunday,<br />

<strong>January</strong> 24.<br />

Six teams will be competing at the<br />

event, whichisafundraiser to support<br />

the Amuri St John building project.<br />

Women’spolo is one of the fastestgrowing<br />

sports in the world.<br />

The UnitedStates has the largest<br />

number of womenplaying the game,<br />

with 989. It is followed by Britain on 544,<br />

Australia on 393, and New Zealand with<br />

145 players. The age of players varies<br />

from13to 65 and over.<br />

Women usuallyplay in mixed teams<br />

withthe men, but thisisatournament<br />

for them to play against their peers.<br />

The four major sponsors are Douglas<br />

FarmContracting,Mhor Women’s<br />

Fashion in Hanmer Springs, Dwyer<br />

Lewis Earthworks Ltd and Amuri<br />

Transport.<br />

The sponsor of the winner’sprize is<br />
