On Jan. 15, village council approved the<br />

appropriation of $24,000 from the water<br />

capital improvement fund to pay for the<br />

project.<br />

The break occurred in late December and<br />

impacted parts of State Route 56, Church<br />

Street, and Houston Street. When crews<br />

started repair work, they encountered<br />

valves that broke when turned which added<br />

to the scope of the project. The break has<br />

since been repaired and the valves replaced.<br />

New asphalt was poured over the affected<br />

The Deercreek Township trustees will meet on the following dates<br />

in <strong>Madison</strong> County is Friday, February 12, <strong>2021</strong>.<br />

• Payments must be made in person at the <strong>Madison</strong><br />

County Treasurer’s Office until 4:00 P.M. Friday,<br />

February 12, <strong>2021</strong>.<br />

• Mailed payments must be postmarked by the Post<br />

Office by midnight Friday, February 12, <strong>2021</strong>.<br />

• By law, first-half taxes paid after February 12, <strong>2021</strong>,<br />

will incur a 5% penalty for the first ten days and after<br />

ten days a 10% penalty will incur regardless of<br />

whether the taxpayer has received a bill.<br />

Also at the Jan. 15 meeting, council approved<br />

the creation of an account for unclaimed<br />

funds. An audit revealed that the<br />

village has $4,500 in unclaimed funds,<br />

meaning checks they made to, say, contractors,<br />

vendors, or employees that have not<br />

been cashed for a long time.<br />

By law, the village must keep such funds<br />

in an unclaimed funds account for five years<br />

before the funds can be released back into<br />

the general fund.<br />

Council also approved legislation recognizing<br />

the Ohio Department of Transportation’s<br />

intent to replace and upgrade<br />

guardrails on U.S. Route 62. The work will<br />

be done at no cost to the village.<br />

With the start of a new year, council<br />

elected a new president. Jay Pettey replaces<br />

Becky Martin as the council leader for <strong>2021</strong>.<br />

and fourth Tuesdays of the month in<br />

assistance via Zoom. She can assist with basic computer help, e-mail<br />

assistance, and help with Microsoft products such as Word, Power-<br />

Point and Excel. Call the library for dates and times and to register.<br />

• Winter Reading Challenge. The challenge runs through Feb.<br />

28. Children (birth-10 years old), teens (11-17), and adults are invited<br />

to read for 10 hours and complete 10 physical activities. Every<br />

child and teen who finishes the challenge gets to pick out a prize<br />

and new book. Children and teens who want to go beyond the basic<br />

challenge can complete the Super Reader Challenge for a chance at<br />

a grand prize. Adults who complete the challenge will be entered<br />

for a chance to win a $50 gift card for Amazon or Walmart. Register<br />

• Virtual Story Times. Toddler story times are held at 10 a.m.<br />
