THE LAST WORD ANGELIQUE KERBER The tennis star and NetJets Brand Ambassador on life off court TRAVEL Sun worshipper or thrill-seeker? Long beach days mixed with the occasional diving session are my way to fully rewind and relax. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world as part of my job, but I’ve never visited South Africa, which is why I want to make a trip to Cape Town a reality soon. FOOD Top names or hidden gems? Even though I have the deepest respect for the craftsmanship of Michelinstarred restaurants, my passions lie with little-known local treasures that serve simple, fresh dishes. Whereas a few years ago, I would be very conservative with my choice of restaurants while traveling on tour, I have started to experiment a lot more recently. I’m constantly seeking out new recommendations from friends and locals. ARCHITECTURE Classical or modern? That is a tough question because I love the architectural contrast of both elements. Strolling around historical European cities such as Rome and Paris on a summer night is a magical experience. But then again, the modern architecture and skyline of cities such as Singapore are full of energy and inspiration. ARTS Still life or live performance? From a packed Centre Court or a live performance in a sold-out arena at a concert, I’ve always been fascinated by the dynamic of a crowd and the interaction with the artist/athlete. ENTERTAINMENT Good book or big screen? I have become more and more of a book person. We spend so much time digitally that sometimes it is very relaxing to just take a book and immerse yourself in it. FUTURE PLANS Media, coaching, or other ideas? I am definitely investing more and more thought in what I will be after my active career in tennis. During the lockdown I’ve used the time to rebuild, renovate, and expand my own tennis academy, the Angie Kerber Academy. Besides, I’m proudly involved in building up a new grass court tennis tournament, with the help of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, in Bad Homburg, Germany. ACCOMMODATION Grandes dames, luxe design, or eminently private? Throughout the past few years I’ve spent on average more time in hotels than at home. To get a sense of coziness, I prefer small, intimate hotels over modern business facilities. Very rarely—during Wimbledon, for example—I do opt for a private home. JULIAN RENTZSCH 82 NetJets
