Proving age is no barrier
to keeping fit and mobile
• By Samantha Mythen
LIN CLARK, an 81-year-old
energetic gym-goer believes
age is no excuse for not making
your fitness and mobility a
priority.
Clark makes up a trio of
inspiring active ladies attending
the Female Federation gym in
Ferrymead who all share their
birthdays this month.
Isabel Mundy and Ngaire
Onekawa are both set to turn
80-years-old this month, on
February 7 and 18 respectively.
Clark’s 82nd birthday is on February
15.
All three powerhouse ladies
regularly attend the gym, taking
part in Pilates and balance
classes, as well as working on
their own cardio and weights
routines.
They are choosing to stay
fit and healthy, defying the
stereotype that aging holds you
back from achieving an active
lifestyle.
Decked out with a Crusaders
tattoo and a Rugby World Cup
tattoo on each wrist, Onekawa is
a keen sportswoman.
She has always been active.
Interest in Mexican restaurant rises
• By Bea Gooding
EXCITEMENT IS building in
Linwood as residents anticipate
the opening of the city’s very first
Taco Bell restaurant in the area.
Construction of the $1.3m
Mexican-inspired fast food restaurant
at the Eastgate Mall site
started last month and is set to
open later this year.
Linwood resident Simon Fisher
was walking to Subway with his
son Shane when he shared his
excitement for the suburb’s newest
addition.
He could not wait to start
tucking into their fresh tacos,
salads and desserts.
“It’s great, I’ve always wanted a
Taco Bell in Christchurch. I used
to live in Australia and we had
lots of Taco Bells.”
New Brighton resident Linda
Rowlinson, who was waiting for
a bus outside Eastgate, regularly
visits the area. She likes Mexican
food, so having a new option in
Linwood was something to look
forward to.
“I think it’s great. I’m up here
shopping all the time; I live in
New Brighton and there’s nothing
there so we’ve got to come up
here,” she said.
She believes the area has been
targeted for these types of outlets
but was not concerned because
“people should have a variety.”
Jacob Chatterton, of Linwood,
is looking forward to the prospect
of getting a job at the restaurant
more than eating
its food.
“I’ve never had Taco
Bell. But if I don’t have a
job by then, I’ll definitely
apply to work there.
“I think everyone
around here will like it
Jacob
Chatterton
more, and it means less
people at McDonald’s
and KFC. The only thing
healthy for a takeaway here is the
Subway.”
But its proximity to other outlets
has caused some concern.
It joins a group of restaurants
within 200m of Linwood Avenue
School, including KFC, McDonald’s,
Burger King and
Domino’s pizza, with
other options inside
Eastgate Mall.
Said principal Gretchen
Smith: “For us as a
school, we have constant
temptation at the gate,
fuelled by the power
of the brand, and the
aroma of fast food wafting
over the school on a daily
basis, which can be appetising or
nauseating.”
•HAVE YOUR SAY: What’s
your view on another fast
food outlet in the area?
Email bea.gooding@
starmedia.kiwi
This comes after a study published
last week in the Preventive
Medicine journal by Canterbury
University revealed a correlation
between poor mental health
and people living in unhealthy
environments.
People experiencing recent
mental distress or received a diagnosis
had a greater likelihood
of living near fast food or alcohol
outlets, with less access to parks
and waterways, the study found.
The findings highlighted a
need for local councils and governments
to create environments
that support healthy lifestyles,
lowering the risk of mental illness
and distress.
Smith said the school was not
consulted on the matter seeing as
the area is a commercial zone.
Starting this year, the school
will supply lunch every day
as part of the Ministry of
Education’s “lunch in school”
programme, to help pupils meet
their nutritional needs.
“The big brands that target this
area will, of course, say that they
are just meeting the demands of
the local community and that
they offer healthy alternatives
such as salad and water, or that
they give back to the community.”
It is not the first time concerns
regarding the proliferation of fast
food restaurants in Linwood has
been raised.
In 2016, a petition was presented
to the city council to ban fast
food restaurants within 800m of
schools.
But residents have yet to see
action as the city council said
it was not able to change the
district plan to regulate fast food
until this year.
Saving Justice Truth, Transparency, and Trust
by James Comey
This will not come as a surprise to anyone, including even to the President’s most
ardent defenders: Donald Trump lied to me from the start.
Saving Justice is James Comey’s searing memoir and guide to reclaiming truth in
the institutions of justice, which have been so badly damaged under Trump. Trump
has managed to convince millions of Americas that our federal justice system
doesn’t operate with integrity and that its leaders routinely fail to tell the truth. That
is a dangerous situation that must be addressed and corrected.
James Comey has worked in government in Republican and Democratic
administrations - as a line federal prosecutor, a US Attorney, Justice Dept official,
and Director of the FBI - and he shares stories from his career that illuminate
the indispensable core values of America’s justice institutions and why we must
overcome and repair the corrosive damage Trump and his underlings have done
with deception, alternative facts, dishonesty, political payback, and amorality.
Oscar Garden A Tale of One Man’s Love of Flying
by dr Annamaria Garden
One day in 1930, a man walked into a department store in London and bought
an aeroplane. Having just learned to fly, Oscar Garden dreamed of flying to
Australia. In his newly purchased aeroplane, he did just that. This adventure
and myriad of others this risk-taker embarked on are recounted in this book.
Oscar’s love of flying saw him joy riding to many places in the world, including
New Zealand, South Africa, and up through Africa to Palestine. While based
in London, he joined British Airways and Imperial Airways flying flying boats
across the Empire. Finally, he came to rest in Auckland, New Zealand, after
delivering the Awarua, the second of New Zealand’s flying boats, used during
World War II for communication and travel, reducing New Zealand’s isolation.
He became Chief Pilot of TEAL, the New Zealand airline, for half of the war
years and beyond, and eventually resigned due to serious disagreement over
management and political agendas. This biography describes Oscar Garden’s
fascinating journey through these episodes.
Kremlin Winter
russia and the Second Coming of Vladimir Putin
by robert Service
Vladimir Putin has dominated Russian politics since Boris Yeltsin relinquished the
presidency in his favour in May 2000. He served two terms as president, before
himself relinquishing the post to his prime minister, Dimitri Medvedev, only to return
to presidential power for a third time in 2012. Putin’s rule, whether as president or
prime minister, has been marked by a steady increase in domestic repression and
international assertiveness. Despite this, there have been signs of liberal growth and
Putin - and Russia - now faces a far from certain future. Robert Service, acclaimed
biographer of Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky and one of our finest historians of modern
Russia, brings his deep understanding of that country to bear on the man who leads
it. He reveals a premier who cannot take his supremacy for granted, yet is determined
to impose his will not only on his closest associates but on society at large. It is a
riveting insight into power politics as Russia faces a blizzard of difficulties both at
home and abroad.
Sir Bob Charles - The Biography
Limited edition by Geoff Saunders
There are only 1963 copies of the Limited Edition available for sale. They
are individually numbered and signed by Sir Bob Charles, offering readers a
unique opportunity to own a piece of New Zealand’s golfing history. 1963 is
significant, marking the year Sir Bob Charles became the first New Zealander to
win a golfing major. This is the first comprehensive biography of Sir Bob Charles.
He embarked upon a career that no New Zealander had chosen before - that
of a full-time touring professional golfer. He competed in the “golden age” of
professional golf in the 1960s and 1970s, and acquired the title of the “best
putter in the world”. On the Senior PGA Tour from 1986 he became the man to
beat. With his 1999 knighthood and his elevation to the Order of New Zealand
in 2011 he has been honoured not only for his success as a golfer but also for
the way he has lived his life. The combination of the narrative with over 160
photographs makes Sir Bob Charles - The Biography, a stunning in-depth study
of the life and times of this great New Zealand sportsman.
Battle of Brothers
William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult
by robert Lacey
The world has watched Prince William and Prince Harry since they were born. Raised
by Princess Diana to be the closest of brothers, how have the boy princes grown into
very different, now distanced men? From royal expert and bestselling author Robert
Lacey, this book is an unparalleled insider account of tumult and secrecy revealing
the untold details of William and Harry’s early closeness then estrangement. It asks
what happens when two sons are raised for vastly different futures. Were the seeds
of damage sowed as Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage painfully unraveled for
all the world to see? What choices has Queen Elizabeth II made in marshalling her
feuding heirs? What parts have Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle played in helping
their husbands to choose their differing paths? And what is the real, unvarnished
story behind Harry and Meghan’s dramatic departure? In the most intimate vision
yet of life behind closed doors, with the family’s highs, lows and hardest decisions
all laid out, this is a journey into royal life as never offered before.
‘It’s a relief to find you’re still strong’
• From page 1
The mother of three children,
seven grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren, played
netball until she was 42. She
even competed against her own
daughters.
Clark has always found her
energy outdoors in nature; a keen
hiker, horse rider and gardener.
She owns a remote cabin in
Lewis Pass, and although is not
climbing the nearby mountain
heights, she still loves to wander
through the beech trees.
Mundy, who lives in Horotane
Valley, used to work in her
family’s fruit and tomato
business which kept her strong
and fit. When she finished up
working, she decided to head to
the gym. She’s been attending
three times a week for the past
four years.
Onekawa, of Aranui, has kept
up consistent gym practice for
more than 12 years. She now
attends Female Federation five
times a week.
Onekawa can do multiple
push-ups, straight-backed
with her knees up. She also said
she can do side plank rotations
and dips, and has completed
200m within 15 minutes on the
ski erg.
Clark knows the importance of
rest days. She has been attending
the gym on and off since 1998,
CAMARADERIE: Lin Clark, Isabel Mundy and Ngaire Onekawa all attend the gym multiple
their practice.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
and in spite of a hip replacement
taking her out of the game for
a while, she is building up her
practice one again. Clark enjoys
chin-ups, the chest press and leg
press.
“It’s a relief to find you’re still
strong,” she said.
When answering why they
attended the gym, Onekawa
promptly stood up from her
chair. “This is why,” she said.
Mundy agreed: “To keep my
core strong!”
Clark said: “As you get older,
the physical stuff becomes
terribly important and you
become more aware of your body
and how it works.”
“Coming to the gym is a
positive step to being a strong
and complete person.”
For Clark, getting to the gym
is also important for the mental
benefits. Her life passions have
been education and theatre;
in 2019, she was awarded the
prestigious Drama New Zealand
President’s Award, given to
someone who has significantly
contributed to the drama space
over their lifetime.
They all share the same goal:
To keep going.
There is strong camaraderie
between the three women,
and they love being part of
the community at Female
Federation.
Onekawa said she gets coffee
twice a week with her new found
gym friends.
“It’s a sisterhood here,” said
Clark.
Jill Kennedy, their personal
trainer is 64-years-old. She
only has glowing reviews of
the fitness levels of the three
women.
“I cannot wait til I retire to
be able to work out with them
all.”
Clark said: “We are lucky
enough to be able to work out,
and so we choose to make the
most of this and continue to stay
fit.”

Red zone fences come down
KILOMETRES OF fencing
inside the former residential
red zones are being removed to
make the areas more accessible
to the public and more efficient
to maintain.
City council residential red
zone manager Brenden Winder
said most of the existing fences
inside the regeneration areas
were no longer required.
The areas include the Ōtākaro
Avon River Corridor, Southshore,
South New Brighton and
Brooklands.
Removing the fences will
make the land more inviting
for visitors and improve the city
council’s efficiency in maintaining
the areas, said Winder.
“The majority of these fences
were put up to improve public
safety as the land was cleared of
buildings following the earthquakes,”
he said.
“With those buildings now
gone, the internal fences are no
longer required and we want to
minimise obstruction for people
wishing to use the area.
“We’ll look at ways to repurpose
the posts, poles and wire
elsewhere in the other regeneration
areas.”
Perimeter fencing along
roads that pass through the
Exhibition of dune plants
at New Brighton Library
BRIAR COOK is showcasing her
native dune plants exhibition at the
New Brighton Library this month.
The exhibition holds a special
place for New Brighton artist – it is
a dedication to her father, eminent
horticulturalist, Alleyne Cook, who
died in October 2019.
Cook grew up surrounded by
plants and as a child, followed her
father around the garden asking
him every question she could think
of.
Although she has worked as an
artist for about 30 years, often with
plant material, she never imagined
they would be shared with others.
“My first impulse was to simply
see more clearly the plants I was
ART:
Briar Cook
sketching
the plants
on the
estuary
dunes.
drawing. Once I started looking
closely at our beautiful native
plants, I wanted to learn more, and
then I wanted to share what I have
learned with everyone,” Cook said.
“I am proud of this project, which
was created with funding from the
creative communities scheme and
this resource is for any age, who is
interested in the native plants who
call our sand dunes home.
“In my opinion, any definition
of the New Brighton community
needs to include the plants that
make our lives here possible. I
hope this resource will encourage
everyone living close to the sea to
take a closer look at these beautiful
community members.”
AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
Customers pleased with honest,
reliable vehicle servicing
Having your vehicle regularly serviced is
key to getting the best out of it in terms of
fuel efficiency and reduced wear and tear
on expensive parts.
Kevin, who owns and operates Parker
Automotive in Birmingham Drive,
provides full vehicle servicing to keep your
vehicle running smoothly, as well as WOFs,
batteries and tyres.
He also carries out all mechanical repairs,
including cam belt replacement, suspension
work, clutch and gearbox repairs, only
repairing what’s necessary, and without
charging the earth.
He has owned the business since 2007,
and over that time has established a loyal
customer base – people that rely on him
to give them sound advice and provide
professional care and servicing for their
vehicles.
Customers come from across the city,
Spreydon, Hillmorton, Riccarton, Halswell
and Middleton areas, and the business has
received many positive Google reviews
from customers. Below are some examples:
I have been going to Parker Automotive
for the last eight years and I cannot fault the
service. The mechanical work has been top
notch! If you want top service and value for
money I recommend Parker Automotive. –
honest guy who gets the job done in a very
timely manor and he has outstanding
communication. The overall service I’ve
received is excellent. – Lachlan Poole
I know it’s not always about price but
sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs,
you just want a perceived good deal and work
carried out by someone who seems to care.
Kevin came recommended by a friend, and
what a great recommendation. His work was
clean, efficient, fast and came in under what
I thought it was going to cost. So we took my
partner’s car there two days later and that
too was completed faster than we expected
and at an almost unbelievable cost.
Give Parker Automotive a shot next
time you need something done. Kevin
is a nice fella too, win win. – Mark
Lewis
Earlier this year, Parker Automotive
moved from premises on the Lincoln
and Torrens roads corner to a new site
at 23B Birmingham Drive, Middleton.
Opening hours are Monday to
Friday 7.30am-4pm, Saturday 8am-
to help with all your vehicle servicing
to the Covid-19 crisis.
City councillors James Gough,
Sam MacDonald, Catherine
Chu, Phil Mauger, Aaron Keown
and James Daniels have sent a
letter to Mayor Lianne Dalziel
asking her to lead a conversation
as to how a zero per cent rates
increase could be achieved this
year.
The city council is proposing
an average rates increase of 4.65
this year’s Draft Annual Plan
which is currently under public
consultation until April 5 and
will be finalised before July 1.
The 2018-2028 Long Term
rates increase over 10 years.
