Vintage dressup to mark 100<br />

Members of Mid Canterbury Federation of<br />
Women’s Institute are planning to bust out<br />
their vintageclothingtocelebrate<br />
Founders Day andthe 100th anniversary<br />
of the organisation.<br />
They are hoping to have adisplay in the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Museum and are planning a<br />
churchserviceon<strong>February</strong> 22 in the<br />
historic church atthe Plains Museum in<br />
Tinwald.<br />
It willbetaken by ReverendAnnette<br />
Eggleston.<br />
It is the day after theofficially<br />
recognised date of Founders Day.<br />
It willbefollowed by the planting of a<br />
Kowhai tree in the grounds and then a<br />
picnicinthe Tinwald Domain.<br />
The Women’s Institute (WI) was started<br />
by Anna Spencer(known as Bessie) who<br />
brought the concepttoNew Zealand.<br />
Ms Spencer launched thefirst WI at<br />
Rissington, Hawke’sBay in 1921 after<br />
being introduced to the Women’s Institute<br />
of EnglandonavisittoLondon.<br />
She was so captivated by the concept of<br />
the WI shewas sure the organisation<br />
would be beneficial to countrywomenin<br />
New Zealand.<br />
By 1925 there were six WIs in the<br />
Hawke’s Bay area, andfromthere it has<br />
grownmwithmore than 4000 members<br />
nationwide.<br />

presidentMavis Wilkins saidaspartofthe<br />
100year celebrations members were<br />
being encouraged to dress in their finest<br />
pre1940s clothing for the annual general<br />
meeting on <strong>February</strong>26.<br />

and pearl necklaces, she said.<br />
The dress up was afun tribute to those<br />
times.<br />
Mrs Wilkins said members wouldbe<br />
digging into hiddenrecesses at hometo<br />
find suitable garments for wearasa<br />
tribute to theanniversary or maybe<br />
looking at costumehire.<br />

properties are currently without their<br />
yellowwheelie bins and another<br />
1530properties are being<br />
monitoredfor not complying with<br />
recyclingrules.Some 25 people<br />
hadbeen giventheirbins backin<br />
the lastmonth, while others lost<br />
theirs.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council staff<br />
say the level of contaminationin<br />
recyclingdroppedto4.1 per cent for<br />
Decemberand January.The costof<br />
auditingrecyclingbins and keeping<br />
people ‘‘on their toes’’islessthan<br />
consigningfull loads of recycling to<br />
landfill. Council has been advised<br />
that anotherprivate operatorwill be<br />
offeringanorganicscollection for<br />
food waste andgreenwaste in<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> from July 1.<br />

new toilets at Wakanui Beach and<br />
Bowyers Stream has beenpushed<br />
