This year’s Multi Cultural Bite<br />

has been hailed as abig<br />

success, with ticketsales up 20<br />

per cent and the new venue<br />

given the thumbs up.<br />

The day kicked off witha<br />

karakia and the singing of the<br />

national anthem, marking the<br />

significance of Waitangi Day.<br />

Some 30 food stalls<br />

representing New Zealand, the<br />

Pacific, South East Asia, Africa,<br />

South Asia,and Latin America,<br />

showcased their cuisine.<br />

More than12,000 bite tickets<br />

were sold at the four hour<br />

event, representing an increase<br />

of around 20 percent on last<br />

year’s figures, said <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Multi Cultural Trust member<br />

Thelma Bell.<br />

All the food and drinks sold<br />

was homemade, andstall<br />

holders represented their<br />

country of origin ratherthan<br />

any commercialconcerns, she<br />

said.<br />

The new venue in <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Domain proved to be even more<br />

popular than expectedand<br />

received plenty of positive<br />

feedback.<br />

Things hadrun smoothly on<br />

the day and organisers were<br />

grateful for the goodweather<br />

and good support within the<br />

community.<br />

The organising committee<br />

had already written to<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council<br />

asking to book the venuefor<br />

Waitangi Day in 2022, Mrs Bell<br />

said.<br />

Throughout the event the<br />

crowdwas entertained with a<br />

rangeof music and dance that<br />

included dancers from<br />

Ecuador, the <strong>Ashburton</strong> Pipe<br />

and Silver bands, the group<br />

Pacific Tribal andCook Islands<br />

cultural group.<br />

Multi Cultural Bite was<br />

supported by Eco Educate and<br />

EnviroWaste, whoensured as<br />

much wasteaspossible was<br />

diverted from landfill.<br />

Other partners at the cultural<br />

celebration included the Red<br />

Cross, which provided free<br />

water, the CancerSociety,<br />

which provided free sun<br />

screen, and the Kidney<br />

Foundationand St John, which<br />

provided freeblood pressure<br />

checks.<br />

An armyofvolunteers helped<br />

before,during and after the<br />

eventtoensure its smooth<br />

running.<br />

Motorhomeshow<br />

The South Island Motorhome<br />

and Caravan Show is on this<br />

weekend at the <strong>Ashburton</strong> A&P<br />

Showgrounds.<br />

The event promotes all things<br />

to do with motorhomes and<br />

caravans and has been held<br />

locally for the last two decades.<br />

It draws alarge number of<br />

trade exhibitors and also<br />

allows private sellers to rent a<br />

site in order to selltheir<br />

caravan or motorhomeona<br />

face­to­face basis.<br />

The show runs from 9am until<br />

4pm on Saturday and 9am until<br />

3pm on Sunday.<br />
