New faces add to youth council voice<br />
Fourteen members on the <strong>2021</strong><br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> Youth Council will<br />
provide avoice foryoung<br />
people in thedistrict.<br />
The new committee ranges in<br />
agefrom <strong>11</strong> to 23 and will drive<br />
youth council activities,help<br />
organise events, liaise with<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> DistrictCouncil and<br />
address issues facing young<br />
people in thedistrict.<br />
They have awide range of<br />
intereststhatinclude drama,<br />
sailing, dance,softball, karate,<br />
volleyballand chess.<br />
The group’s chairman is<br />
20yearold Michael Baker, who<br />
worksfor Des Kruger Tree<br />
Services.Heissupported by<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> College Year <strong>11</strong><br />
studentsHenryGoodes and<br />
Lara Shierlaw, who arecodeputiesand<br />
have respective<br />
eventand community liaison<br />
dutiesaswell.<br />
Former Borough School<br />
student Maddie Page, now in<br />
herfirst year at <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
College, has takenonthe<br />
secretary role, and 20yearold<br />
Beatrice Bernarte,who works<br />
at Rosebank Resthome, is<br />
global ambassador.<br />
Other members include Mt<br />
Hutt College’sAbbie Wilson<br />
James, who is submissions coordinator,<br />
and JohnMagyaya<br />
from <strong>Ashburton</strong> College, who is<br />
in charge of onlinemedia and is<br />
assisted by Alex Cojocary, the<br />
youngest member on the<br />
council.<br />

Theyouth council will meet<br />
on the firstWednesday of each<br />
month andtwo district<br />
councillors, Cr Diane<br />
Rawlinson and Cr Lynette<br />
Lovett, will support them.<br />

Lions boost shuttle fund<br />
Lions clubs from aroundMid<br />
Canterbury have banded<br />
together to supportthe<br />
Canterbury West Coast Cancer<br />
Society’s shuttle service.<br />
Local clubs are amongthe 23<br />
Lions clubs from aroundthe<br />
South Island to donate $13,000<br />
to the service, which provides<br />
free transport forpatients<br />
stayinginthe society’s<br />
accommodation to and from<br />
radiation and chemotherapy<br />
appointments at Christchurch<br />
Hospital.<br />
Janice PorterHoare,<br />
fundraising and events<br />
manager for the Cancer<br />
Society’s CWC division, said<br />
that the Lions Clubs’ significant<br />
donation was ahuge help<br />
towards funding the $65,000<br />
required to operate theshuttle<br />
each year.<br />
“Theshuttle currently<br />
operatesfrom 7.30am until 9pm<br />
Monday to Friday, which<br />
translates to approximately<br />
16,000 individual patient trips.<br />
Given that the patients we are<br />
providing our servicefor come<br />
from all over the South Island,<br />
including Mid and South<br />
Canterbury, the West Coast and<br />
Nelson/Marlborough, it is<br />
fabulous to see localLions<br />
Clubs from these regions<br />
supporting this service,” she<br />
said.<br />

on behalf of the contributing<br />
Lions clubs.<br />
MrsStewart said that like<br />
mostpeople she had family<br />
members and colleagues who<br />
had been diagnosed with<br />
cancer.<br />
“Our club members are<br />
happy to support the Cancer<br />
Society shuttle serviceasyou<br />
just neverknowwhensomeone<br />
in your community is going to<br />
need it.”<br />
It is the fourth consecutive<br />
year that the Lions clubs have<br />
donated to theshuttleservice.<br />
The firstdonation was<br />
organised by the late John<br />
Cramond from Motueka in 2017<br />
after he used the shuttle<br />
servicehimself while having<br />
cancer treatment in<br />
Christchurch.<br />
The societyisexpecting<br />
demandfor the shuttle service<br />
to grow evenfurtherthisyear.<br />
