motorhomes andcaravansand<br />

ran bothdays at the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

A&P Showgrounds.<br />

event hadbeen well­receivedand<br />

feedback had beenverypositive.<br />

Numberswere particularly<br />

goodthrough thegate on Saturday<br />

and overallwereonpar withlast<br />

Proceedswere also likely to be<br />

on parwith last year and would<br />

once againgobackinto the<br />

communityvia the club’s<br />

charitable foundation.<br />

fundraiserand the Canterbury Track Cycling<br />

recovers from aserious mountain bike injury<br />

which has left her paralysed fromthe chest<br />

down.<br />

The quiz night is set for March 5at7.30pm at<br />

the cycling clubrooms andregistration is by<br />

emailtotinwaldcyclingclub@gmail.com.<br />

The Givealittle page states it hasbeenset up<br />

to support‘‘a passionate supporter of local<br />

cycling’’ andsomeone who is ‘‘inspirational<br />

andalways keen to helpwhenneeded’’.<br />

Mrs McGrath has been an official at both<br />

regional and nationalcycling eventsand has<br />

also coached and encouraged children on the<br />

track in Canterbury.<br />

First refugee family to<br />

arrive here in mid-April<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>’s first Afghan<br />

refugees areexpected to arrive<br />

in the district in mid­April.<br />

The family of five; two<br />

parentswith their children ­<br />

boys aged16and six, andagirl<br />

of <strong>18</strong> months, are travellingto<br />

New Zealand from Malaysia.<br />

Theywill go into aMIQ<br />

isolation facility on their<br />

arrival and will undergothe<br />

same covid testing regime as<br />

any other travellers.After their<br />

isolation period theywill head<br />

to Mangere Refugee<br />

Resettlement Centre for afive<br />

week orientation programme.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> refugee settlement<br />

support team leader Kathy<br />

Harrington­Watt said the family<br />

would be visitedatMangere and<br />

told more about <strong>Ashburton</strong> and<br />

their settlement here.<br />

Ahouse to rent for the family<br />

was being sought.<br />

More refugee families would<br />

be arriving in <strong>Ashburton</strong> at the<br />

end of May and in mid­June.<br />

‘‘This is an excitingand<br />

special opportunity for both the<br />

familiesarrivingand the<br />

communityof<strong>Ashburton</strong>,’’ said<br />

Mrs Harrington­Watt.<br />

Two workshopsaimed at<br />

agencies, servicesand staff that<br />

will be involved in the<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> refugeesettlement<br />

programme will be run here by<br />

the Red Cross early next month.<br />

An information evening for<br />

volunteers keentobeinvolved<br />

in the settlement programme<br />

will alsobeheldinthenext few<br />

weeks.<br />

Adate and venue for the<br />

evening is stilltobeconfirmed.
