Proceedswill go to palliative carein <strong>Ashburton</strong>. Our membersenjoyed a Beckley mysterybus trip at the endof January,visiting parts of Canterbury that some of us hadn’t visited previously. Highlightsincluded seeingthe gorgeous coloursofgerberas androsesatK&L Nurseriesin Springston, and lunching in Leeston at theCoop and Barrel Restaurant. We look forward to the “IFF Day” (Information, Fun and Fellowship), welcoming Altrusans from further afield, to be held in <strong>Ashburton</strong>, laterin <strong>February</strong>, transferredfrom 2020. Preparationsfor ourFabric and Craft Bazaarto be held on April 10 arewell in hand,with contributionsfrom many in the <strong>Ashburton</strong> community measuredand preparedfor sale. We met ourhealth bursary recipient for <strong>2021</strong>, Maria Costas, whose impressiveCV shows her dedication to the communityand her ambitions for acareer in thehealth service. Members werereminded of the bustrip to Christchurch on March 23. The raffle was drawn. After morningtea the speaker was the coordinator of Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren.She told us she looks after three grandsons, otherwisethey wouldhave goneinto fostercare. At times it is achallenge,counselling is provided, but there are lots of rewards.Children need to feel safe. There are 20 local families looking after grandchildren. Their group meets once a month.Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust NZ is a registeredCharitable Trust operating throughout New Zealandproviding support servicestograndparents who areraisingtheir grandchildren on afulltimebasis. Their aim is to support grandparents, grandchildren andwhanauto achieve positive outcomes in their lives. Julie extended thanks to the speaker on behalf of the club. Our regular Tuesday competition has startedwith goodnumbers taking part, and we runsocialgamesonthe sameday andthisworks well for all levels of players. We had five playerstake part in the ArthurDiaper Tournament at Papanui with Adair and Colin Jones coming second in the Plate and Ellen Pithie and Jonny Wrightthird, and the Bowlwas won by Shelagh Field andpartner. The Clubs NZ Doubles that was putoff lastyear was played the following day with Shelagh Field and Ellen Pithie coming second in the Bowl. We had four players takepart in the Alan Pickard Doubles at Ascot. Johnny Wright and partnerwere runners up,and Jan Guilford and partnerwon the Plate. Three of our players participated in theNZOpenat Herne Bay.With their partners Neville Bensdorp was third in the championship, Karen Bensdorp thirdinthe Consolation, and Richard Brownewon the Plate. Saturday we heldour first club competition forthe year the Presidents Mixed Triples with <strong>18</strong> members taking part. This was won by Jan Guilford, Francie Osborne, and Neville Bensdorp. Runners up EllenPithie, Johnny Wrightand Cory Harnett. Third wasJoan Healey,Shelagh Field and Colin Jones. Our Tuesday Club Daythis weekwas cancelleddue to the Covid19 level two lockdown,as many of us areofthe age group where we need to be more carefulabout looking after ourselves. <strong>Ashburton</strong> Golf Club Well, Ican honestly say, that was one of the bestweekends that Ihave ever had at the golf club. From 7am Saturday morning until 8pm Sunday night, it was justawonderful fun filled weekend. Theweatherplayed its part, the coursewas immaculate thankstoBen,Josh,Neil, Dave and all their many, many helpers. Terry and Tom are brilliant organisers, and everything fittedinperfectly. Gordon,Clarrie and Merv were again amazing in the starters box. Gettingover 220 players aroundthe course to goodtime wasagreat feat. Vicki and the girls were superb in theresults office.Dee, Sonia and Sheryl kept us very well hydrated andthe spit roast company kept us well fed. Raffleand Calcutta sellers, ball spotters, BBQcooks,MattDavis the Pro andall the other helpers. Thankyou all for a sterlingeffort. We must praise our great sponsors. Many other pairs and players pickedupgreat prizes, vouchers from HarveyNorman, Sega Golf,Harveys BakeHouse and Ton’s Thai weregladly accepted. On the raffle, Brendon Davidson showed that it is always better being lucky rather than skilful, picking up a brandnew Titliest golf bag. For me the best part of the weekend wasthe after golf on Saturday evening. Alex Roa got himself $250 with agreat chip in. Ross Chatts held agreat Calcutta auction. Thenthe musicgot turned up. Young Bev gave us an impromptu yogalesson. Someone’s dicky hip seemed to cure itself after acouple of beers and amicrophone was handed over with Elvis playing, and if youhave never seen Brucedance thenyou mustput it on your bucket list. Ireckon it’s up there with the Norwegian Northern lights and Sunset over the Pyramids. Ok, everyone,take abreather. Then we will kickonfor the Interprovincials. Till next time, goodgolfing!
