www.ashburtoncourier.co.nz Jake starts Mayfield ice cream hut An intellectually disabled 20yearold born without aleft hand is bringing hope to his familyby starting arealfruit icecream hut he's dubbed HappySundaes. ‘‘If Ican do it, anyonecan.Iwant to inspire others andmake them happy,’’ Jake Manhire told the Herald. Nearly three yearsago,his dad Alan suffered abrainhaemorrhage while tryingtostopaservice station robbery in Mayfield, Canterbury wherethe family lives. Alan Manhire spentthree weeks in hospitalrecovering from the brain bleed"the sizeof an egg" and was offwork for severalmonths. Though he can now walk andtalk, he's never been able to fully recover, with his memory taking thebiggest toll. At the time of the robbery, the family had just launched their dream cafe called ZOFS, short for Ze Old Food Shack, but after the father's brain injury they struggled to stay afloat and were forced to close. Now, with theadded venture of Jake Manhire's icecream hut, the cafe located on the Inland Scenic Route in Mayfield has reopened. Deborah Manhire said after Covid they thought local businesses would struggle with no international tourists passing. ‘‘It did get really quiet, when it was like that for the whole country, but now we've found this road is way busier, even withoutthe internationaltourists. ‘‘It feels like allofthe North Island are visiting the South Island.’’ Jake Manhire loves making realfruit icecreams with his mum Deborah at their Mayfield family cafe. PHOTO GEORGE HEARD Deborah Manhire saidthe icecream hut was her son's pride and joy. ‘‘Heloves telling customers this is his icecream hut and he named it HappySundaes.’’ Shealsohopes hisnew hut will help himmakenew friends and wanted to encourage other families with disabled children to visit. ‘‘I just want to make people happy with icecream,’’ JakeManhire said. The ‘‘kind soul’’ hadbecome extremely interested in the family business and was always coming up with newideas for the menu like Mexican burgers. ‘‘I think in another life he would have been achef,’’ his mother said. ‘‘Heloves thepeople and has an abundance of generosity.’’ When they decidedtoreopen, Jake Manhire was super excited and wanted to contribute so he came up with HappySundaes. When Deborah Manhire was pregnant with herson she suffered a rare defect called amniotic band syndrome (ABS). It's acondition where arupture causes bands of tissueinside the sac of fluid to tangle around thebaby's body causing injury. In hiscase, it caused theloss of his left hand. He was also born intellectually disabled. Despite his disabilities, he continues to strive above and spread joy to others.
