Early success for dragon boat crew<br />

The PegasusDragonshad an<br />
exciting start to racingatthe<br />
Aoraki Open Dragon Boat<br />
Regatta.<br />
Despite the allwomen team<br />
beginningtraining onlylast<br />
October,they finished second<br />
in the 1km race at the regatta<br />
on Lake Rua, Christchurch,on<br />
January 24, in theirsecond<br />
competitive event.<br />
The crew had hoped to make<br />
theirrace debut at home on<br />
Lake Pegasus in the Ice<br />
Breaker Regatta on December<br />
7.<br />
However,algal bloom meant<br />
the event was moved to the<br />
Avon River, near New<br />
Brighton, in Christchurch.<br />

made in Italy and tuned in<br />

Ben works fulltime as a<br />
diesel mechanic at<br />
Truckstops in Christchurch,<br />
but his ultimate dream is to<br />
eventually head overseas to<br />
test his skills against the<br />
world on the international<br />
solo bike circuit.<br />

Therewere nine paddlers at<br />
the team’s firsttraining session<br />
last October. That has now<br />
grownto36membersand they<br />
compete as two teams. ‘‘These<br />
ladies stepped out of their<br />
comfort zone to join and Iam<br />
extremely proud of them for<br />
that.’’ The nextregatta they are<br />
training for is the Akaroa 10s<br />
eventon<strong>February</strong>21.<br />
