Art NewsNepal to Transform Trash Collected FromEverest Into Art to Raise EnvironmentalAwarenessNepal has decided to set an examplefor the world. The country hasannounced plans to convert tonnesof trash collected from Mount Everestinto a piece of art. It will be puton display in a gallery and will educatethe world on the need to saveEverest from becoming a dumpingsite.Recently, Nepal made a team of peopleand collected tonnes of garbagefrom the mountain. It mostly was amix of torn tents, plastic bottles,oxygen bottles, ladders, cans andwrappers. Mountain climbers andtrekkers leave a huge mess at thetop and the adjoining regions. Trashhas been collected from the peakwhich is 8848.86 m (29032 ft).he art project director, Tommy Gustafsson,along with co-founder ofthe Sagarmatha Next Centre, saidthat several local and foreign artistswill be involved in creating artworkfrom the collected waste materials.They will turn trash into treasure.Gustafsson informed the media,“We want to showcase how youcan transform solid waste to preciouspieces of art… and generateemployment and income. We hopeto change the people’s perceptionsabout the garbage and manage it.”The Centre is set at an elevationof 3780 m at Syangboche, whichis also the main trail to the EverestBase Camp. Gustafsson said thatthe number of tourists will be limitedbecause of pandemic restrictions.He further informed that thatartwork and products created fromtrash will be put on display to raiseenvironmental awareness.The products will also be sold assouvenirs and the money collectedshall go into conservation purposes.Page 19 | www.magzoid.com
